Can you use dry erase markers on Plexi?

I wanna' make an RP table that has a plexi top on a hinge that we can put maps and stuff under to use dry erase markers on the surface of the plexi.

Andy,

I just used 16 of my kids' dry eraser markers on some plexi at the house. All of the colors came up using just the dry eraser. I guess in the worse case you could always use a baby wipe to clean off the plexi.

Some of the dry erasers will stain the plex when you try to erase them, so check on a scrap 1st. Let us know what you find that will work, I would like to do something similar.

We use dry erase markers and grease pencils on plexiglass at work (Air Traffic Control Tower) and it comes up pretty good. Just watch out for scratches on the plexi; the marker likes to stick in there.

This is true.
Another thing is you can scratch the plexi or even mar it if youre not careful.:unsure

Thanks all.

One of my gamers is a retired air force navigator and he said they used wax pencils and cleaned the plexi with cigarette ashes and water. He was the one who suggested this table when he found out I had an extra piece of plexi laying around.

Upon laying out some sketches, it looks like a couple of sheets of plywood hinged together at one end laid out over a banquet tablewill serve. And covered with a longe piece of felt will (like a warhammer table.)

And I might take my sheet of plexi, grid it up on one side and frame it in wood. This way it can be set down in the center of the table over maps n'such, leaving the table clear for other non-map-needing games. I'll try some dry erase on scrap I have, but if worse comes to worse, i can use grease pencils.

For my weekly D&D sessions, I picked up an irregular Chessex Mega Mat (I also aquired a Mondo Mat recently). It's vinyl, has 1 inch square grid on one side and hex on the other. You use wet-erase markers on it (available at OfficeDepot in a rainbow of colors quite cheap) to draw out your map and then use paper towel with water to clean it up. This could be easily incorporated into a framed table.

Check out Chessex Factory Seconds for more info. Local gaming shops also carry the Chessex mats, it's where I got mine.

Oh, I have one of those. We use it all the time with wet erase markers. And it was great for most RPG games, but our new game uses a lot of space craft schematics, and they belog to one of my buddies who's running the game and wants to use the published stuff without messing them up.

Plus it gives me a chance to fiddle around in m6y shop and gives me an excuse to build a bigger table after all these years of using a banquet table. The wife has consented in other words. :)

Fantastic link, BTW. Had no idea that was available.

One bit of caution in regards to the factory second Chessex mats. I found out the other day why mine are seconds... the grid layout isn't square. I decided to trim it up a bit and cut along the grid line. When I was done, the edge of the mat isn't square anymore, it's curved. This may cause issues if you were going to frame it so be weary.

Laying the plexi over the schematics so they don't get messed up is a good idea. The dry/wet erase markers may discolor the plexi if it isn't coated or proteceted. Maybe a good coat of Future floor polish or something on the plexi would keep this from happening. Oh hell, if you're going to make up the table anyway, head down to the hardware store and pick up a thin piece of glass and put it into a hinged frame for the table lid.
