Dredd (Post-release)

Really? Just because i disagree with the majority concensus?

Dredd just felt like a fan-film to me. It didn't do anything for me. Maybe if it had been bigger in scale, more fx, and felt like a 2000 ad strip, i would have liked it.

But i didn't.

I simply couldn't see how it could be a yawn fest. If I compare to any blockbuster movie I can think of, recently, it is almost non-stop action. If it wasn't you're thing I understand.

Being one that utterly cant stand to read comics and dont care for characters with terrible design like Dredd, I actually liked the film. It looked cheap from the practical sets to the clothing and of course the vehicles (horrid vehicles, just horrendous) but oddly enough it worked. What didnt work for me was the bland off the shelf costume design and terrible looking helmet but then maybe thats what the comic geeks wanted.
It is what it is, ultra violent and gritty. Sadly any actor could be Dredd and this time out all he did was overly frown and talk with a load of charcoal in his throat.

One other thing that really bugged me was the end when the CGI fell apart as the bad girl falls down.

My biggest gripe, and ive not read more than the above few posts so it may have been brought up prior, is the overly ripped abundance on Blade Runner from the character villains to settings. We strait up get introduced to Zhora and Leon in the same scene right down to the neck tattoo, hair, camera angles, facial hair, dumb look, clothing...

Im curious to see ABC robots in the next film as thats all I liked in the Stallone disaster version.

Ok, maybe i was a little touchy,

BUT, i've been a fan of Dredd since 1978, there was just no sci-fi meat to this itteration, just lots of shooting in dark hallways. A shame as i really liked Urban as Dredd.

i kinda saw this being set in a young Mega city, the walls are built and the 1st city blocks are built, the vehicles are beaten up normal stuff, that is just whats available, it's after a global nuclear conflict,so they are rebuilding bit by bit.
I liked it ,i still have every 2000ad on my pc and about 150 comics(i used to have em all ,but i gave them away 15 years ago).
Dredd is Dredd,no 2nd thoughts,a real just do it kinda judge. The 80's Dredd stories were kinda dark in some progs,so i think it worked and hope there could be another

@ Rich - he nailed the frown, didn't he? Very Ezquerrian, ha ha.

God, the Lawmasters sucked as hard as we thought from the first pics, though, eh? The only saving grace of the Ford F150 (auggh!!!) H-wagons was that you barely saw them.

But I guess I factored all that stuff in before the release date. I liked the performances a lot, the necessary exposition wasn't overpowering, the quality of the relatively low number of effects shots was good, the story was simple but acceptable and Anderson was as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as any of her comic incarnations. :D Added up to a whole lot more than I expected.

Will there be a sequel is my only other thought? :confused :(

Home Video sales have saved movies in the past, and even films that were beaten at the box office by better reviewed films went on to greater success.

I'll be doing my part for Dredd. I not only consider it to be a very good film, but also a great example on how a reboot was not only necessary, but also done right.

Amen Brother.....

I really wanted to like Dredd. The trailers looked amazing, Karl Urban looked the part and so did Anderson. The whole drug-plot seemed intriguing and... it's Judge Dredd. However, I ended up being disappointed. It's not that I think it was a bad movie, it was an okay film, especially given what they had to work with.

The 3D-effects were nicely done. Especially the plot-device with the slow motion. Not only do they have an excuse for the slow motion that works in the context of the story, but it also gives them a nice excuse to crank up the colours a bit. And that's what they did. I loved watching the carnage unfold while SloMo is in effect.

Generally, I loved the visual style of the movie. The atmosphere of MegaCity One was captured perfectly, I think. It's wrecked, it's poor, it's crime-ridden. What helped this a lot was the poignancy of Dredd going out while being fully aware - even going as far as stating it outright - that the Judges are only able to respond to six percent of the emergency calls. Yet he fights on without even as much as a second thought or a doubt. I loved that aspect. Generally, the characterization was spot-on and despite his constant stonewalling, I felt like I got to know Dredd.

The story can work. It has, in fact. It's a story designed to be a vehicle to lead from one action scene to the next. If you guys know "The Raid: Redemption", you know how the exact same story can work. Good guys at the bottom, bad guys on top. Good guys must get bad guys or else, there's no going home. Only that in case of The Raid, it worked brilliantly because the action scenes in between them walking stairs were thrilling and exciting. This is due to the film being a martial arts showcase. Star Iko Uwais shows off his Silat skills. And that's where I see Dredd's major flaw. All Dredd does is shooting people. From a distance. There is no immediate action. It's all from a distance.

Also, Dredd is never in trouble. Sure, the entire block being locked down and there being a horde of bad guys is a pretty bad situation. But this is Dredd we're talking about. Dredd is a force of nature. He needs something to go up against. Take his gun away or have him run out of ammo, if only for one fight. I would have liked that.

Another thing that greatly annoyed me is that Dredd repeatedly went against his ideals, which just is not Dredd. Granted, this had to be done for dramatic effect and so that in a sequel, there could be Anderson again. But he doesn't just pass people who clearly failed. That's not what he does. He's also not the type to just leave a bum scurry off without any kind of punishment.

Overall, I wanted to like it much more than I did. I hope there will be a sequel and I will be on board for that.

Depends which era of Dredd you're talking about. The 70's Dredd when he was young was very black and white with the law and treatment of other judges. However the older Dredd (modern day comics) is much more grey and is willing to give people a second chance (look at judge DeMarco). In fact in the comics he's been referred by the other younger judges as being "all heart".

I thought he did run out of ammo at one point. And he was clearly in danger when they leveled a whole floor with mini-guns. Also, when he used his weapon as a flamethrower he was in a pinch.

Absolutely! I heard one guy giving out in a forum that Dredd had stubble... Sheesh! Sure, he's usually clean shaven and in the Cursed Earth saga (if memory serves) he went on a few rants about it, but that was it.

I'm surprised at the number of "Oh, if it had a bigger budget" comments - no offence, but it feels like BS to me. This movie reminded me so much of the '80s style adult sci-fi I grew up with like Terminator and Aliens. Gritty, 'real', and not full of toys for kids in the audience.

Wouldn't people rather see even a bit more of that? I'm all over the blu-ray, had it pre-ordered as soon as I could. Would kill for a sequel!

Oh, and personally, I loved the way Anderson's psychic aspect was handled - far too 'parlour trick' in other movies.

He did indeed run out of ammo briefly. About half a second before the movie was over. It had absolutely no dramatic impact other than him having to hide for half a second. He then got shot by an armour piercing round... he didn't even flinch.

As for the no-compromise thing: I am willing to admit that he has bargained before, but it seemed very out of place in the movie. After all, this is a younger Dredd we're seeing.

I don't know the comic books, but I would think you'd be more forgiving as a younger cop, than you'd be when you are older and more weary and fed up with the scum of the city that just keeps getting worse and worse. A more natural progression would be going from letting the occasional bad guy go if the reason for doing so works for Dredd, to a more stern, no-deals approach.

I did my part. I bought two copies of the BluRay. One for myself and another for a comic book buddy of mine.

I have to admit. I did not get a chance to see this in the theater as I was afraid it was gonna be another version like stallone did about 10 years ago. Did get a chance to see it today after renting it from my PS3 Network. All I have to say is WHAT A IDIOT I WAS!!!

This version was Awesome, had a killer story, Karl Urban really is Dredd in my book. Also that hottie psychic judge was just :love. The story line was awesome to. I am for sure buying this on Blue Ray for myself for a birthday in a few weeks, unless some else wants to.. well can't blame me for trying!
