Dredd (Post-release)

Or just people expecting Resident Evil brainless kind of crap.

Saw it yesterday, loved it, will try to go see it again... definitely want to see a continuation. It is so relentless... just another day on the job.

I loved Dredd's reaction to when Anderson said she'd already failed, when she let the computer tech guy go, yet still picked up a weapon to finish what they were there to do. She didn't whine, she didn't ***** about it, she just kept on going, without a complaint, even though she was out. She had failed, yet continued, and you could just see him make up his mind then that she was worthy of being a Judge.

I've seen it 3 times now, I expect I'll be seeing it a few more before it leaves theatres. I don't have television and I don't listen to the radio, so I have absolutely no idea what the Dredd marketing campaign was like here in Canada. I was aware of the film because I'm a geek and this is the kind of thing I stay abreast of. Was the average person aware this film was coming out? I have no idea.

As I see it there are a couple of things working against Dredd in North America:

1) Dredd just isn't a widely known character here. Outside of comic geeks, Dredd doesn't have name recognition here.

2) The 1995 film. Stallone's film may have poisoned the well for Dredd in North America. Those average members of the public who do know Dredd are probably remembering the Stallone movie. I love the old movie, is goofy fun and stupid on an epic scale. For a lot of people though, memories of the original are not going to inspire them to see a new Dredd film.

3) Rated R. Very R. R Rated films are hard to market as it is. They rarely make the kind of money that, say, a PG film will make because it limits the audience. Dredd isn't just R though, it's VERY R. Hard R's are often not big money makers.

My hope is that Dredd blows up on home video. Big dvd and bluray sales could very well tip the scales in terms of green lighting a sequel. For now I'm just spreading the word amongst my friends that Dredd kicks ass and is totally worth their time to go see. Fingers crossed we'll see more of Karl Urban's frown in the future ;)

I just got back from the cinema, and loved it. My wife and her sister.... not so much. It's because they're not familiar with the character, and how he is. The one-liners, the over-the-top violence. They didn't care for it. Me, I loved it.

I hope to see it again, if not, it'll be in my blu-ray collection.

Saw DREDD last weekend, and I absolutely loved it. Karl Urban's portrayal of Dredd was spot on, leaps and bounds beyond Stallone's. Great story, great dialogue, brutal action, and the slow-mo effects were beautiful. Lots of stand-out moments too. Like others have already mentioned, only 4 other people were in the theater with me and my girlfriend. It's really a shame too, because the movie absolutely kicks ass. I'll be seeing it again this weekend.

I saw this movie last Saturday at an 11:30 AM showing. There were 4 people in the theater including myself. I agree that this movie was done really well, and it did a lot more for me than the recent rendition of Total Recall. The 3D was used really well, and did a great job of portraying how brutal the movie was. Although I had never read the comics, this got me interested in checking them out.

That being said, this felt like it could have been an episode of a TV show. The storyline was so confined to the building and Mama, and it seemed like it lacked a little plot wise. However, definitely worth checking out!

Hopefully it'll recoup some money on home release. I'd love to see them take a few more risks with the sequel and show Mega City One in all it's glory. It's a shame it didn't have the visuals of the Stallone " Ah am duh Luh!" version but with the unremitting grim tone of the 2012 iteration.

I try to pass the word on to as many people as possible.
Sadly, I'm betting the studio is already putting the notion to bed about doing a sequel.
I thought this movie had everything it needed to light up moviegoers but the people just weren't biting.

The Slo-mo sequences were great for 3D but I may agree that the general marketing if this film may have contributed to its poor bix office numbers.

We live in a time where sequels are given green lights based on early box office numbers, so I'm feeling the pain of this already.
Now, this isn't always the case; we've seen movies get another helping after home video release, but that takes much more time.

In any case, I loved this movie, can't wait for the Blu ray release and would like to know what the studio would like to do (if anything) to continue the franchise.

this movie tanked and there won't be a sequel.

the fact that the budget was low at $50 million and it still flopped showed that there ain't going to be a sequel barring a miracle.

I tried to see it again at the weekend. It's been taken off most of the screens near me which is VERY disappointing. Fingers crossed it goes ballistic in home retail sales...I doubt it though.

Don't count on that to save the day, either. Look what happened with Serenity. "Ok, so...we got beaten by that Jodie Foster airplane movie....but there's still the DVD!! Purchases and home rentals count! Studios track that stuff! Maybe they'll even do a direct-to-DVD season 2!!!"

Or not.

Not having read the comics or seen the previous rendition, I wasn't really sure what to expect except a lot of violence and action. That said, I really enjoyed it! I didn't get to see it in 3D :( but it was still fun. Only 4 other people in the theatre with my bf and I when we went, and then a couple girls traipsed in about an hour in and seemed confused where they were or what they were watching.

It felt like the first mission arc in an FPS game to me. Like, you're the rookie judge, get a bunch of calls and pick the one in this building, then have to fight your way out through a series of pre-determined side missions and RP cinematics. I'd play it.

Karl Urban also played Grimm in Doom, this movie was really his kind of "thing". Considering his past roles. He seems quite a fan of fantasy and sci-fi films.

I had to see it today - the last day in 3D at my local AMC chain before it got bumped off. I paid full admission for 3D, which hurt the wallet but it was worth every penny. I give it my full endorsement as it was true to the character and origninal comic. Urban never removes his helmet! :thumbsup

Portraying Anderson as a rookie, helps to draw in those not familiar with Dredd and his harsh world.

Not for the timid, this movie captured the violence and crime ridden environment that I remember from years ago in printed form. It brought back the flavor of the sci-fi favorites, Mad Max & Robocop.

I definitely plan to buy this when it comes out on DVD/BluRay.

I saw Dredd a couple of hours ago. I really liked it, and I think It deserved better luck. Here (in my town in Argentina) it was released last week and will be gone by tomorrow. A problem that affected the movie here is that most part of the people has no idea who the heck is Dredd. Sorry for the sequels; anyway I will buy the bluray for sure.

Yeah, I went to see it a week after it was released, and it was out of most of the theaters in my area. I feel like the film could have been more successful during the summer. The fall seems like an odd time for a violent and dark R-rated comic book movie. :facepalm
