Donner Superman II opinions?

It's a better movie, and Donner was only 75% done or so. Imagine what a 100% effort would have been like.

Yeah, you need to have a bit of imagination to 100% "get" what it could have been - scratch that, WOULD have been if Donner was in charge. So much of the best acting and plot devices were scrapped for the goofy mess we ended up with. I think we are lucky to even get the "Donner version" we did. How many other poorly made movies with high potential do we get to do that with?

I prefer the Donner cut in general but I actually like the scenes with his mother (opposed to Brando) better.

Glad you brought up this point- while people are generally disputing the larger plot differences between the two versions, I have to say that I'm constantly drawing my own comparisons with how some of the more subtle emotional scenes do (or do not) move me.

Though I love Brando playing his father, I too was more moved by his interaction with his mother in a few instances.

When Supes is about to give up his powers to live a mortal life with Lois and his mother says "Oh my son.....are you sure?" and he replies "Mother- I love her", it seems so earnest and matter of fact, as if any other option is inconceivable, despite the possible consequences. Before he's rendered 'helpless' by the chamber, you can see his love for a human woman has already 'disarmed' him.

The same cannot be said of the scene when it involves his father, and he points to his father's ghost in a weird, almost accusing manner, more like "Don't you dare try to talk me out of it".

Just my two cents, but for reasons such as these, I will always prefer the theatrical version!
