Interest Doctor Who 12th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver, Confession Dial & Sonic Stand

I think the acrylic rods may just look a little big because of the glare of the green light. To be honest, I think the size for those looks fine on your model.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. As usual, thinking about what makes the most sense for the original build will usually result in correct assumptions and I doubt Nick would cast or extrude a non-standard size of acrylic rod for the build when there are plenty of sizes to choose from.

Since my last post I fixed the bands around the emitter shaft and the hex screws, plus thinned out the "brass rods" running through the mechanical bits. Additionally, I altered the slider to not move as far forward or back as it originally did. Two reasons for this - it doesn't seem to slide all the way to the edge in the actual prop - plus since the electronics will work with a 2-way slide switch that only travels 4mm from front to back, having the switch travel TOO much further than that is awkward. Originally, it slid a total of around 12mm but I changed it to only slide about 10.

I also made the groove between the center double brass rings a bit deeper so that a washer can be implemented and not rise too far from the inside of that groove. I'm not sure which size would be best but since they're typically a bit elastic, even one too small should work. The diameter of that is 18.5mm with a 1.5mm wide channel but depending on how a given washer's diameter is measured (from center point, inside or outside, I'm not sure what's standard) getting a size as close to that 18.5mm or under would be best. I'll probably pick up a pack for anyone that needs the acrylic rods and offer them together apart from the 3d printed kit.

Nothing to do now but wait...

Okay, fixes have been made for the new version of the sonic as well as the port stand to accommodate the new dimensions of the tail section! Just waiting on the *inaccurate* prototypes to arrive to test the fit of the parts.

Perfect, Do you get any money for it, I have never used shapeways. Do I pay them or you.

I would like a full set.

So here's a question for people - how many of you are planning to buy a 3d printed kit and implement your own electronics? The reason I ask is that the member doing electronics is offering to include the housing unit with their kit so when you get it all you have to do is slide it into the body and push the LED's into their front housing when assembling the sonic - rather than you getting the electronics separately from the kit that includes the housing and having to install them into the housing yourself. Basically, I'm trying to decide if it makes sense to include the housing with the 3d printed kit or not.

Thoughts? Questions?

I planned on using whatever electronics you had worked out with another member. I'm not smart enough to figure it out on my own.

Okay so based on the feedback thus far, it makes the most sense to sell the kit without the housing and get some of those units over to the other member to install the electronics for you guys. Okay cool, thanks for chiming in guys!

I may still make an alternate version available for a few bucks more that includes the housing for those that want to do their own elec package, and I'll include a list of certain components that fit the housing - but yeah, seems like most people want the package ready to go.

Just placed an order for one sonic. Thx for designing it, Dr.

Oh no! That's the first version - the prototype I uploaded to print for myself.

I've made some changes since then but nothing that should affect functionality of the electronics or the compatibility with the acrylic rods. If you want the more accurate version, you'll want to cancel that and wait until I give the go ahead in the sales thread I was going to put up once they were ready. I didn't think anyone would track it down on Shapeways lol.

Sorry about that. I wanted to gauge printability with non-RPF folks that happened upon it in searches since the more times it prints successfully, the better it bodes for future prints of the newer version.

The prototype is just about done production and should be shipped tomorrow! This is only a guess but the order contains 6 files, all but one of which are completed and the last one has been "in production" since Monday so it should be done today - it may even ship today if it finishes early enough. So that means I should have the prototype in hand by the weekend and by early next week, I'll have it painted and assembled, and hopefully will have the electronics installed as well. Once I've confirmed the fit of everything and the inner housing's functionality with the electronics, I'll be able to make the models available on Shapeways!

Looking forward to this...as being a huge Star Trek (24th century) fan, I've gotten into 3D printed props. Resin is still nice on certain things but being able to design & print in hollow plastic is fascinating. Learning more & more each day.

Can't wait to see these in production...
