Doc Savage Costume for 80th Anniversary

Doc Savage Gun #1:

Forgot to include this photo of Bama's with same gun, with a slight addition. Cover for Murder Melody

He used the same Astro Ray Gun, see body of gun, but Bama just painted on a silencer of sorts, the long extension piece to gun.

Doc Savage Gun #2:

This was from a Bob Larkin Doc Savage Omnibus cover painting. See below.

I never knew if Steve Holland was holding that gun in a photo shot or if Bob added it from a gun he had seen.

It is a Sonic Fazer made by Kusan in the 1980's. They were trying to capitalize on the Star Wars craze and created a Hans Solo looking character and his gun. See box pic.

This is the one I own...it makes cool noises and still works!!

You already saw this prop above, the Pith Helmet.

But thought to show it again with accompanying Bama The Phantom City cover and also a pic with original Pulp cover and Bantam paperback cover of Doc Savage side by side...

Ok, this prop I do not own, as it is way expensive and very rare to find. Would have to make it mysef to own one.

Steve Holland wore it for The Fortress of Solitude cover photo which then James Bama painted into the cover. See pics.

This novel is one of my favorite Doc Savage stories as the villian John Sunlight gets away and comes back for another story, rare in the Doc Savage sagas.

This jacket is a Sherling WW II Sheepskin B-7 Flying Jacket. (If I am wrong about the name, please feel free to correct).

I have seen an original one for sale and it was way above my Doc Savage Cosplay budget. You can get replicas, but they cost a pretty penny as well.

So enjoy the pics, as that is about as close as I can get to one...

Makes you wonder how Steve Holland, the model, or James Bama, the artist, were able to get one???

Kirk:

Thanks so much!! I have been working on this for a few years and at times I wonder if I went a bit too far with my Doc costume research.

i.e. I haven't even got to the 2 different ripped shirts that Steve wore for his Doc photos. His first one got thrown away by an employee at a hotel where he was attending a convention (info from an interview he gave); that is the one he is wearing in the MoB cover and most of Bama's covers.

I just found out from another RPF member that the second one, a later version, is still owned by someone. You can see this one in a few later Bama covers and some of DeVito covers. Though DeVito also used some poses with the original ripped shirt. Larkin used pics with both shirts as well.

He may have had more than two ripped shirts, but at least for the Doc covers you an always make out two distinct ripped shirt patterns. I am always open to be corrected.

By the way, I was a Star Trek fan years before I got to know Doc Savage in the early 1970s, so I appreciate the Trek reference in your comment!

Doc Savage Wrist Band Prop:

Ok, this is a cross-over to honor Ron Ely's Doc Savage from the 1975 movie and also to cover up my exposed left wrist area on my muscle suit. The other wrist has the shirt cuff still attached.

I bought this from Urban Wrist to acknowledge their 3 pics I borrowed, please don't take that as a plug.

In the Geoge Pal movie Doc Savage:The Man of Bronze, in the early scenes of the movie, Doc is wearing a wristband on his left wrist which also has a watch on it that he snychs up to the clock on his safe to open it.

See two picks, both show wrist band and one in front of blown open safe.

So, I got this wrist band to honor Ron Ely and also cover up my exposed wrist where muscle suit ends.

I guess it is one that Johnny Depp wears, that is cool as I admire his acting and characters.

Just to be clear this was never part of the Doc Savage books, covers or cannon. It is my homage to Ron's Doc and to have a bit of the movie thrown in my costume.

I think Doc did have a version of this wrist band in the 1970s Marvel Color Comic series that went for 8 issues.

Looking at the other Doc cosplay outfits from the past some use the Doc Savage Belt Buckle and others do not.

Jim G., Doc Savage collector extrodinaire, owns one of the original Doc Savage belt buckle prop that was used in the Doc Savage Movie that Ron Ely wore. See Ron Ely pic as Doc to see his belt buckle.

I interviewed Ron a few years back and he said that the prop master had 5 belt buckles that said Doc Savage.

If anyone out there knows where any of the other 4 may be, please let me know, I am a buyer!! Or any props from the Doc Savage movie, let me know.

Here is a pic of that original Doc Savage belt buckle that Jim owns and also a fan made version that Alan L. made a few years back and sold on eBay. The one I own is Alan L's version or the middle one.

Also, just for fun here is another fan made one sold on eBay recently and Jim G. was the high bidder. He is the master collector of Doc Savage belt buckles.

Here are pics of previous Doc Cosplayers:

The first one is from another RPF member.

Jim G is the one with Doc Savage written above him with black background (he is wearing his authentic Doc movie belt buckle prop) and again by the Fotress of Solitude sign he has a different Doc outfit, this time based on the Ron Ely outfit as Doc. See next pic as that person is also sporting a Ron Ely as Doc Shirt.

All of these Doc cosplayers had these pics posted online, so I hope it was ok to post them here. If not, please let me know and I will take your pic down.

Enjoy!!

As Johnny Littlejohn would say, "I'll be Superamalgamated!"

This is awesome work, my good man...you definitely do Clark Savage, Jr. justice with your handiwork! Alas, at my current size, I'm not convincing enough to pull off a good Doc (read: fat), but one day I hope to try, and maybe do him as well as you have.

Like yourself, I began my interest in sci-fi and fantasy with the original Trek (I got to see them in initial broadcast, lol), and then in the early 70's, I discovered Doc, when my best friend brought a Bantam issue to school...after that, I was hooked completely, reading every story and making it my passion to collect every Bantam version I could find (the iconic widow's peak has grown on me), as well as any bookcover that featured art by James Bama, Bob Larkin, Fred Pfeiffer, et. al. that I could lay my hands on.

Unfortunately, for want of storage space (read: married), I've since divested myself of all those books, but I kept the full Doc series...it has a place of honor in my living room bookcase!

Anyway..enough about me...here's hoping that a renewed interest in Doc will be spurred on by the 80th Anniversary this year; I keep hoping that this guy:

...will take up the Doc mantle in the future, now that he's an actor once again (yeah, I know he's old, but he's my first choice, lol)!

Rob:

Thanks so much for your comments. I too am a hard core Doc fan. I collected every book every published about Doc, including all the foreign Doc Paperback Books. I have a Bantam paperback 1st edition collection which are all near mint to mint and then a second whole set of Bantam's that are my reading copies.

Doc paperback books also came out in England (3), France (59), Germany (90), Spain (10), Japan (5-10), Italy (18), Denmark (12), Norway (13), Finland (1), and Russia (6). I put the number of books published in each country in ( ). Also, the books were written in the country's native language. The Russian books are hardback.

The reason I am telling you this is that from the Russian books, they actually created the only known official Doc item that has Arnold on the cover as Doc Savage. See third pic.

This book came out in 1995, around the time Arnold was seriously going to be Doc in the Frank Marabout movie. Script was written and everything. I have a copy of that script.

The Russian books came out in 2 series, 4 books in series 1 and 2 books in series 2. The second series was published by PIA books and each book had three stories. The first book had The Man of Bronze and two other stories, see first pic. And the second book, with Arnold as Doc on cover, had Resurrection Day as the second story and this is what the cover is based on. See needle going into Pharoah's Eye.

Of the three pics, the middle on is pic found on the inside cover of the books had which shows Doc's Fab 5.

Enjoy!!

BAK55:

I hope you are ok with me posting your Doc Cosplay outfit. It was one of the first I had ever seen and it is cool!!

For everyone else that is the first Doc cosplayer in my pcis above.

Thanks!!

LD,
You're a lot more hardcore fan of Doc than I am, brother! I'm envious of you...I spent my wayward youth collecting Star Trek and Star Wars...now, I wished I had indulged in Doc just a little more!

Those are awesome images; I remember when the "Doc talks" were going on with Arnold, way back then. Life being what it is, I understand why he went in a different direction with his career choices; now that he's older, I know it would be a challenge for him, but considering the SFX/makeup capabilities of today, I'm sure they could make it work (IMHO, Terminator: Salvation pulled off a semi-convincing T-800).

It's not a problem at all, otherwise I woudn't have been wisecracking about it.:thumbsup

Thanks so much!! Should have all the parts done in a few weeks and will definitely post a pic of the completed version.

If anyone reading this thread knows of someone who has a great Shadow Cosplay outfit and might be thinking of attending the Wonder Con (Southern CA) in March 2013 or San Diego Comic Con in July 2013, please let me know.

It would be great to walk around together representing these two pulp icons!!

Or even other pulp heroes, I would be open to that!!

Best Doc thread I've ever seen on the RPF. Thanks so much for all of the photos and info. I look forward to seeing your outfit in person at either Wondercon (I might go) or at SDCC (definitely).
If I ever got the time to take some pics of my Doc outfit in progress, I'll post them here.

P.S. I think one of the advantages of going with the Doc belt buckle is to help the uninitiated know who you are. I almost went that direction, but then I decided, no, Doc would never wear that. It's out of character for him. So I went with a vintage buckle like in the Man Of Bronze cover. I figure, if people don't know who I am, I can live with that.

Max Relica: Thanks again and look forward to meeting you at the Wonder Con and also at San Diego Comic Con.

I just asked Alan, who created the Doc Savage Belt Buckles, if he was still selling them. I know some Doc fans had asked if they could still buy one in past Doc threads.

I am not selling it, just the messenger, but I did e-mail Alan and he still has some for sale.

Here is what he said and how you can buy them:
