Do regular people recognize your Wested?

I was at the grocery store buying the Vanity Fair with Indy and the punk on the cover. I was chatting it up with the clerk about her opinions on his fitness for the role at his age, etcetera.

I was wearing my Wested...

I did not call attention to my jacket. Nor did she seem to recognize it all, though the general topic was at hand, and a picture of the jacket was in her hand.

I don't even know what that is.

Wested is the company that has made all of Indy's jackets since ROTLA.

Rob, to be honest with you, people in general, are clueless. In the winter, I usually wear a fedora, especially when it snows. Those damn things make you sweat they're so warm. Now, last year, I was wearing my fedora and a brown leather jacket. The only thing even remotely IJ about it is that it's brown. I've had somebody ask me if I was Indy and I've had people ask me if i was a cowboy. Both times I said "no, I'm just staying warm".

Don't be surprised if the general public couldn't tell the difference between your wested and any other jacket you own.

When I wear mine I'm usually shocked when people tell me it looks like the Indiana Jones jacket. Even if I'm not wearing my Herbert Johnson. Now if I'm wearing both, people passing by say hey Indy.

Funny thing is that in my room, my cousin noticed the Fertility Idol and Cross of Coronado and was able to describe the scenes where it came from, but when looking at my jacket, he couldn't identify it as anything other than a "nice looking jacket".

I remember one time when getting bagels, a guy stopped me and asked if my jacket was a Wested. Only once, but still a surprise

I was in a Garden Ridge here in North Texas a week or 2 before Christmas and I saw a guy in a Wested and a Fedora.

I was trying to get my wife over to where I saw him to ask if he was an RPF'er, but I didn't get the chance.

I've been doing Santa Claus for charity events for years. I'm surprised when half of the people that see me even blink.

So I'm casting one more vote in the "regular people are generally clueless" camp.

Are you going to post some pictures of your jacket so those of us "Blue Blaze Irregulars" can admire it?

Worn mine for years, nobody ever said anything.

Probably a good thing actually, you don't want it to be too recognizable like going around wearing a whip and fedora too. Fun as that would be!

In all the years I've worn them I've never had one person recognize it. Even when I tell them, they usually just give me this look >

As great a jacket as it is, it's not that far outside the realm of real world designs. It's a great jacket, but out of context, it doesn't scream 'Indy'. I suppose if you were carrying around an idol of fertility, things might be different (the fedora wouldn't hurt the recognizability-by-context either).

I wear my Rocketeer jacket out (albeit, not with the front flap attached), and only on very rare occasion does that get recognized. Given the popularity ratio of these films, that's a statement in and of itself.

To the layman, the jacket by itself is indistinguishable from other leather jackets. Couple it with a fedora and it suddenly clicks! I was in London a few weeks back and when I was wearing my AB and Wested combo, some guys would just start whistling the Indy theme when they walk pass me.:lol

Only once, and it was in a high end clothier.

On the other hand my Herbie gets recognized all the time!

Most collegues of mine know that it's an Indy jacket because I told them and THAT'S why they know it. Other than that, no Indy comments.

Since I was wearing Indy Fedoras long time before I started wearing the jacket(s) (and people couldn't even tell THAT to be Indy), they still didn't get it, when I started to wear the jacket(s) as well.

Regards,

Marc

As a bald man, I have several hats that I wear. I have several brown, broad brim, felt hats. None of them look too much like the Indy hat, but all those who comment on them, call me Indy.

I think the average Joe sees the hat, and not the jacket because everyone in the 21st century wears kahkis and a leather jacket, but the hat is a little more dated.

+1

I too have a nice brown, broad brim felt clearly-not-a-fedora hat that garners Indy comments quite regularly. My Dad even goes to such lengths as singing the theme song and cracking an imaginary whip. Of course, hardly anyone wears anything other than a ball cap these days anyways, so I get enough looks just for wearing it, let alone Indy comments. And then when I tell them it's not a fedora - "What's a fedora?"
