Limited Run DL44 ANH Version Blaster Kit

Loved putting this together! Dream come true!
One concern I have - maybe someone could shed light on this - the scope mount clamps do not touch the scope mount when screwed down, they are tightened as far as they can go.
Any insight?

They are not supposed to touch. If they did then the clamps would not be able to create the friction/pressure to tightly hold the scope and it may slide around. Beautiful work BTW!

That's what I was thinking but had to check. I know there are so many who are virtual experts on this prop, so I don't try and assume anything.

A friend of mine noted that I painted my scope flat black. While I considered using regular lacquer paint, for the scope and mount, I used Cerakote Gun Coating. Strong stuff and is exceptionally smooth and durable. I quite like the look.
Overall, I am very happy with this prop and so many kudos to Dark Energy Creations for offering the best kit on the market!
I still need to buy the replacement grips to finish this off and I am waiting on a locking case to arrive, which I will use to store the prop.

Came out great!

DMachinist for the work and all the people who contributed to the research for the most accurate parts! You all are wonderful people!

Can I ask how you finished this???...

Oh, man. I don't think I can get into it; no one man has the attention span to handle the epic tale of fits and frustration that I had putting this together. The short or it is: a lot of trial and error.

Here are some keynotes: Didn't bother sanding Denix, I had worn the finish down to the point where I liked it and just cut the barrel and sanded the hump in the back down so the bull barrel sits properly on it; blued the barrel and flash hider first, drilled a hole in the barrel so the thumbscrew sits flush on the flash hider, filed the trigger and trigger guard, cut one of the threaded rods shorter (the back) so they look somewhat flush when put together, had to blue the cast pieces twice and ended up darkening the final color over an open flame (it really works!), grill and bar mount is painted with spray paint, used "English Chestnut" Minwax stain and sealant for the grips, oven cleaner for the brass bits, Permablue for pewter, Aluminium Black for aluminium.

Mostly no powertools so it all took a really long time.

Wow!!!!

Thanks.

That sounds like a lot of work.

Maybe I will also get the Pre prepared Mauser they offer.

Or maybe snag a MR and call it good.

Thanks again

Tom

If you like putting stuff together like I do, the kit's not a bother. My lack of skill and experience working/bluing metal is something else entire but I saw this a good an opportunity to gain some new skills and, for me, no price can be put on the joy of learning something yourself.

The joy of understanding: that is the most noble of all pleasures. Feathers will lift man, as they do birds, up to Heaven.

I must stop now, my soup's getting cold.

I've done a lot of blueing so it won't be a problem. Plus if I do get it I am going to get the prepped Denix.

Thanks

Hey guys. Nearing the end of my build. Just wanted to get input from some of you experts on anything else? I still need to do a little weathering on the scope bracket bottom, and add the brass and glass to the scope. Haven't secured the bull/flash yet, just screwed them on for looks. I know my scope bracket can look a little light because in darkened it with AB, didn't paint it. Does it look ok? It can look dark in some light and greyish in other light. I kind of like the contrast.
Also, I have plain walnut grips. I've heard some say they use oil to darken them instead of stain? Anyone able to elaborate? Thanks guys!

Tom
Firstly, I gently scuffed all the parts with 0000 Steel Wool to promote better adhesion of paint. All parts were then washed in soapy water.
Before paint, all parts were handled exclusively with gloves and given a brief acetone bath.
For the crossbar and knobs, I used an acrylic paint that when cured, held nicely but still able to weather using a scotchbrite pad.
The scope and scope mount were painted using Cerakote, which is the main reason for the gloves, extra cleaning and acetone bath; the product is exceptionally smooth and durable but won't stick to a surface that has any kind of contamination.
The bull barrel was painted with a lacquer paint.
The flash hider went through a multi stage process; scuffing helped the paint stick and I used transparent blue-gray and some weathering paste for the look I achieved.

I don't believe there is any one way to paint these; it's your blaster and will be unique to you in many ways.
The point is to have fun and enjoy the finished product.
