District 9 "Arc Gun

Although the high-rez orange pic was essential in creating this model, it came from a replica sale on ebay.
And yet this replica came from WETA, the makers of the original prop. It'll be interesting to see if the difference(s?) between the orange/black and white/grey arc guns pictured in this thread will be consistent in the film or if details on the grey/white one will change (due to different props used or maybe parts broken off during filming).

If you follow the youtube link I posted above: Eight seconds into the video you can see three alien guns, the one on the left being the arc gun (painted white/orange this time). The right side of the gun is being shown and there is at least one detail that is different compared to the left side.

Just found a picture of another D-9 gun:

The cannister mounted on the top/backside appears to be the same as the cannister that sprays the actor in the face when found in the "shack".

Wouldn't that make it a prop and not a replica? Just not a screen-used one?

I would say its more prop then a replica. It's identical in construction to the screen used "Arc Generator" guns. WETA made a couple extras to be given away in contests and charity auctions like the one on eBay to hype the movie. SciFi Channel Australia is giving one away as well in a contest they are running right now. I bet we will see a few more after the movie comes out. They are the real deal though.

Splitting hairs here, are we :lol I used the term replica to reply to the "from a replica sale on ebay" statement and simply point out that it wasn't just made by anybody but by the makers of the original prop. To me the one sold is as good as the screen used guns since it was made by WETA, never the less as far as we know it wasn't made for production and may vary in material, functionality and color (though there obviously are different paintschemes and who knows yet if the orange/black one will be seen in the movie). Does this fact make it per se a replica? I don't know and honestly I don't care what we call it, it's just a great piece of craftsmanship and design.

"At what point does a prop become a replica?" Sounds like an interesting discussion for the OT forum ;)

It's a replica. If it was not made for or intended for use in and during the production it is a replica.Regardless of who makes it-WETA or otherwise.
A very nice replica at that.
:)

There's no need to yell Weta, guys. :lol

It's not an acronym, whatever you may have heard. :)

Okay, I have a tricky one for you then: Rick offered a few cure guns from X-Men 3 for sale a while ago. Besides being the maker of the cure gun seen on screen he also made these particular pieces during the production of the movie but without being asked for, due to his experience he simply wanted to be prepared in case they wanted additional guns in no time. Sooo, were these replicas or props? :lol

Why not "yell" the name of a company you like by writing it in capital letters, people have done far more ridiculous things to show their love for a certain company (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvsboPUjrGc :confused) :lol

Well there two ways to look at that:
A:production did not order them so they are replicas
or
B:production-made unused back-up pieces
Personally if the production did not order them then they were not intended for use and were not used making them replicas.

'From the original molds' is a popular one. Ultimateley, still a replica, though. A pedigree one :lol

So anyway! Cool Gun! I'm excited to see the film today! Great Job Sloan! I didn't know you were on here.

I didn't know you were on here. Trent (Devin's Brother)

As soon as I saw "Tropper Trent," I had a feeling that might be you.

Thanks for the compliments. -From everyone.

Devin's got the high-poly model and he's going to look into putting into the CNC. If it all works out well enough, I'm sure you'll see the prop before I will!

It is weird that I don't like the design, yet I still consider it a masterpiece or Sci-fi art?

I can see it doable. I will go, see the movie, this weekend, and watch this thread with plenty of interest.
