District 9 "Arc Gun

Well it states in the listing fine print that you are bidding on an "authentic replica".It is pretty shifty marketing on the part of PP if you ask me.

Duuuuuuuude!! that is SICK! Love it!
Every new commercial I see for this movie makes it look more awesome..
Can't wait!

I emailed them to ask if it was full-sized. The lack of product description in mind-boggling, even for PP :rolleyes

The one Premiere is selling is a replica-not screen-used nor a production original.

ahh, good to know. I was watching that, but was wary since they didn't have an actual prop pictured... Plus they said something like "according to our sources, this was..."

So who know what that actually means... :wacko

Yeah, fine print says -

"*This auction is part of the District 9 Movie Experience. You are bidding on an authentic replica of a District 9 movie prop. Please note this Arc Gun is non-functional. "

Awesome gun regardless.

I hope the film does well so some company (or some of the talented guys here) will make this available to the collectors. It seems like this may have the potential to be the next Aliens pulse rifle (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Response from PP: "yes this is a replica made by the creators of the gun used in the movie and is a full scale piece. Dimensions are 42" x 14 x 3" depth"

Great...

Something else I wanna build, thanks :lol

A lot of the gun seems to be generic pieces thrown together; the handguard reminds me of a PMI VM68 paintball gun, and the part below the "electric conductor" thingy reminds me of a Calico Arms tube magazine for some reason...

The grip itself looks homemade, meaning the top and bottom halves look the same but put together inverted...

The "U" shaped piece at the business end of the gun looks like a pivot mount or some such for something...

I wonder if that thing fires blanks at all. The placement of what looks like it could be a blank-firing pistol looks very similar to how the Psychlo Blasters for Battlefield Earth were made:

If I recall what I read somewhere correctly it was easier to take actual blank-firers (as opposed to real weapons modified to fire blanks) out of the UK (and back presumably) for filming abroad. The only problem is that in the UK the law means that a blank-firing gun must have a solid barrel and the blast exhaust has to come from the top of the gun and away from the firer at about 45°. To overcome this they mounted a blank-firing pistol at 45° into the blaster model so that the exhaust would come from the barrel of the prop.

There's some great information and images on Jim Small's site here.

I made a 3D model of it this week. This gun is too cool. I have a friend with a CNC machine. We might see about making one off the 3d model.

I did my best to replicate every detail I could see from the two pictures that are circulating.

If anyone can get better pics to help make this more accurate, that would be much appreciated.

Great job on the 3 D model RSloan76. I would like one of these in my collection. It would look great in a wall case.

Great work so far RSloan76, especially considering the fact that you only had two pictures as reference :thumbsup Seems like there won't be an art or making of book, so at the moment it looks like you might have to wait for the Blu-Ray release later this year to get better material to work with.

In case someone missed it, here is the hi-res version of the first picture:

RSloan76, that is fantastic work! :thumbsup

If you're going for super accurate, you're missing a couple of details on your model where I've circled (compare with the high def pic in the post above):

Although the high-rez orange pic was essential in creating this model, it came from a replica sale on ebay. As such, I found some differences between that one and the white one that's in the movie shot. It's the image from the movie that I "sided" with when it came to those differences.

The hose that appears in the replica pic is not present in the movie shot, so I left it out. The detailing on that grenade-looking part on the bottom is actually there. The render didn't pic it up. The detail in the middle is also present. I promise :)

If you look at the rear of the gun in the second angle I have in my image, you will also see that the ribbing on the stock is also present.

Ah, OK, cool. :)

I saw that the ribbing on the stock was on your model, but compared to the orange replica gun above it looks like it needs to be more pronounced - i.e. each rib should be taller. But then the white movie gun may be different. :thumbsup
