Well its been a long journey, still need to get a clean cast. This is a hand I patched up with flashing from the mold and some latex. I think the next one I make I will let sit in the mold for longer than two days. It never seems to cure fully. Now for pictures!

I know the pants are supposed to be blue, but I seemed to have mixed them up with seafoam green. ( Everything is sewn from scratch, I tried to order online, but was way too expensive. )

The slippers are also slightly inaccurate also, they need to be the ones with backs on them, though the colour is correct I think.

For paint I used artist quality acrylics mixed with latex. I used a combination of different quantities of red and black with fake blood (glycol variety) for the blood obviously. And I used cornstarch to get the dull parts of the hands dull (and the right colour suprisingly, though unintentional was the colour :p). It's 2 am and I finished this sucker. Now I sleep and go to work to win the costume contest (its not going to be one of those bar contests :p). I'll post some more progress stuff tomorrow.

So started on my halloween costume today.
I'll give you a few hints to start and post more photos when you guess correctly.
Hint number one: From a recent movie.
Hint number two: This is not the final armature

Good Luck!

edit: Heres one for scale.

I've just started on this today. Funny thing is I did this at school even though I didn't have a class today :lol
Just roughed it out. Still need a LOT of detailing.
I'm planning on casting in latex. Or whatever is cheaper.
edit: Now that I look at it I think I made the fingers too long. Good thing I made them out of aluminum.
edit3: I'm going to do the costume at the stage when the alien fornicator has just escaped from being sliced and diced.

I think the thumb is fine, maybe the fingers need to be a bit shorter? This will be a great Halloween costume!

From the source material I have they are pretty long. (maybe the arm and hand were made before the aliens were changed, thats why they are different)

Still....VERY COOL!

Re: District 9 alien hand *possible spoilers* was "Can anyone guess what I'm making?"

Actually, I think you're right, they are long enough. I had just gotten back from seeing the movie when I saw your post! The longer fingers were probably a "first stage" of transition type thing. Look forward to seeing this complete!:thumbsup

Re: District 9 alien hand *possible spoilers* was "Can anyone guess what I'm making?"

I found someones costume hand while browsing the internets. PM me if you want me to remove it if its yours. It seems to have been made before the movie came out (maybe?) or has a lot of artistic interpretation. I'd switch out the jeans, shirt, and ID badge for a hospital shirt, pants, and slippers. I'd also add more blood to the bandage.

looks pretty crab claw to me and a little bulky.

edit: That ID badge is the one that is in the District 9 thread in the Paper Props Forum.

Well heres a few updates after some more time on this project. Here is the first grouping.

This is after roughing it out some more, you start to see the details emerge. Note to self though, 99% isopropanol alcohol does NOT cut plastiline at all. It does work as a lubricant of sort when using a brush, and also if your using an alcohol torch it works to cool down the clay if applied directly. Just make sure to wait for it to evaporate before moving the torch over it again. For cutting the clay I suggest odorless turpentine or "turpenoid".

Here is the second batch of photos (my webcam seems to have flipped the photos horizontally for some reason) :

These photos (the most recent) are taken with my builtin laptop webcam, hence the crappy quality. I had forgotten my sculpting tools at home so I was improvising with a wooden coffee stick, a improvised loop tool, and a painters knife. I finally got my alcohol torch in the mail. I dont know if I could do any of the finishing details without it. It works WONDERS.
I still have to go over it with some finer detail tools and I will be adding the alien arm parts piercing through the human arm flesh also. This Friday I have to go to Vancouver to pick up some hydrocal-30 and some latex to cast this baby up. Hopefully I can get this done for halloween.
