Yeah when I saw the patent I figured it was for the parks because it doesn't look durable enough to be sold as something like the FX lightsabers.
Shouldn't they have posted that on the 1st of April?This lightsaber will have a double use...it can display a laser sword and measure stuff with dual measuring tapes! How awesome.

I think for stage shows, it's a really cool idea. I'm a little concerned about it from a perspective of someone like us who want to have near-perfect replicas of screen used pieces. I still feel that for that, neopixel is the way to go. From a distance on stage, the shorter blade and absolutely enormous handle of Disney's won't be as noticeable, and the effect is definitely worth it to be able to have the blade actually retract. But if you were between 3-6 feet from someone I'm not sure I'd want to have something with that big of a handle and that short of a blade.
