Disney buying Lucasfilm (new Star Wars movies on tap)

Oh my. End of the line for the 501st and other costuming groups. Bad news for the RPF too. The Mouse isn't as forgiving as Lucas.

I highly doubt that they would shut down the 501st. As a charitable organization, the 501st has a huge following and lots of supporters. It would be corporate and PR suicide to shut them down.

I think the people wring their hands the most are those who have cottage industries and social clubs based off of the Star Wars IP. It may all be for naught though - we're literally HOURS into this news, yet every one is panicking... a testament to how emotional people get about Star Wars. It'll be an interesting next few years!

Well you know, rumor is that Uncle George really does believe that 2012 is it. By the looks of everything happening right now...maybe he is right;)

Maybe he is going to use the money for his Chinese ark.

I know a lot of people have bitched about George over the years, but now, when it comes down to it, how many will realise you don't know what you've got until it's gone?

Disney could ruin the franchise in a way only hinted at by The Phantom Menace.

Not to mention the intolerance they will certainly show to costuming groups, fan-made replicas and 80% of the things that our community loves.

I see far more negatives than positives to this scenario, at this point. I'm shocked.

What ever happens... good thing i sold my lightsaber collection and stop making high-end replicas... Don't need the mouse knocking at my door.

It's Disney they honestly don't care what folks thing, they have a few generations of folks brainwashed into thinking they can do no wrong and would throw some charity money at the problem. Plus most folks don't really even know what the 501st is.

Does it say anything about the marketing rights? Lucas owns all the merch rights, so...he may still have a hold on something SW related, which means the 501st will be safe. 501st has been working for Disney for free once a year, so maybe that will change, maybe not. Free labor for their parades.
There is a rumor that 501st will be used in a movie (re-make?) because of the attention to detail in the costumes....we'll see!!

I'm kinda excited. I get more Star Wars movies. Hell yeah. :popcorn
I'm excited and scared at the same time.

My nephew will be 10 when SWVII will come out - I hope these are quality films. If they're as good as the prequels - which he loves - that will work for me.

Try and dress and Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald and advertise it on the net. Even if it's for charity. Disney will not like it, unless it is officially sanctioned:

No kidding, you don't mess with the mouse. Legally, they are 'shot-hit' on anyone breaching their property.

As I said before, you can clearly see who has ties to the 501st as they are the ones in totally disbelief that it could end. They feel just because they do some good that Disney won't squash them. It could be a wake up call for them as Disney has a rep for looking out for themselves first.

Could be a good thing - look at marvel.

Also plenty of marvel costumes and props out there right now on the rpf.

I havent seen any blow back from that.

I am excited that my yet to be born son and I will have a whole new universe of STAR WARS content to enjoy. The fanboy rage and hyperbole can bite me, I will be at the movies....

As a crazy Star Wars fan I am simply shocked, excited, nervous, confused, constipated, anxious, freaked out, and stressed out that I now have to concerned about the outcome another Star Wars movie . . . and do I have to pay royalties to the Mouse for my basement??? lol

Should I do a run of these cut out of stainless steel? Nice artwork!!

I thought I'd share this one I've just created in the wake of this news... :D
