Die Cast Lighted 1/350th TOS Enterprise (TOMY crowd funded)

That's rarely an issue for me nowadays, as I've got in the habit of wearing cotton gloves when unboxing my collectables such as figures and statues. Yes, I know weird. But especially since I started buying silicone busts of various Marvel/DC characters, my bare hands rarely ever touch them as the oils can damage the piece over time.
I use vinyl gloves for handling all of my ships. I highly recommended picking up a box of them.

My Enterprise arrived today. There have been plenty of postings and reviews so I won’t go through the whole unboxing. But I will say this model is beautiful and I’m very pleased with my purchase. I went over every millimeter and didn’t find any of the paint flaws some others have noticed. The weathering, rust ring and grid pattern (spots) aren’t nearly as noticeable to the eye as cameras capture. Same with the screw plugs and saucer seam. I even think the shuttles look good from a normal viewing distance. They could have done a better job engineering them but they aren’t meant to be zoomed in on with a cellphone camera. I will say my shuttle seams are tighter than I’ve seen others post (poor quality control at the factory). The outer box is beautiful and the packaging is very secure. UPS did a fine job delivering without any punctures through the shipping box. The saucer was difficult to install And had to be rocked back and forth with some force to get it seated. It’s NEVER coming off again.

Anyway, I hope those that stuck with it are happy with their models.

Ps.
I WILL be displaying it without the saucer support. We’ll see what happens over time.

Jim, glad you're happy and thanks for the great pics! Some day we need to meet up and compare collections.

Side question for brainstorming... I"m not a fan of the clear bridge dome. Nice there is a bridge in there but I really don't need to see it and prefer the studio model appearance. I'd like it to be frosted over but I don't want to make it a permanent change. Something that could be peeled off or something that might conform to the shape if heated and just set on top.

Anything come to mind?
The clear bridge dome is canon.

My 2 cents having had it for a day, now.

I'm in my mid 50's and my vision is not what it was, so grain of salt here, but in person the painting and finish is much nicer and subtler than what I had seen in pictures.

I wasn't interested in the bridge detail or shuttle bay until I had it! Those are now 2 of my favorite features. My son marveled at the shuttle bay detailing!

I love the lighting! My son kept coming in and turning the lighting on. He called it my new nightlight. He is not a Star Trek fan but was extremely impressed with how the model looked and the overall quality.

I love how it feels like cold metal when touched rather than plastic. It adds a sort of reality to the Enterprise.

One thing I noticed. If you look at the surface of the ship in a well lit room at certain angles in the light. The surface is a fingerprint/blemish magnet if held long enough while moving or putting together. It's a matte finish and fingerprints are not easy to remove. Lol....the surface is very easy to accidently blemish permanently as well I'm sure. I have had little diecast cares in matte paint that do exactly that...

Thanks for mentioning this! I will be more cautious about handling it.

It’s just my preference to match the studio model, and that is actually the pilot bridge which is taller than what we saw Kirk commanding. One could argue the pilot version was replaced by starfleet to one that was opaque. I considered that just a location establishing shot myself. Not an actual clear dome. But again just my preference and personal interpretation.
The studio model never had open bay doors either but they gave us the option to close them.

Just got off the phone with the Tomy outlet-- was told I couldn't order one, but I could put my name on a waiting list. Did anybody get a different result with a different dept or phone number? i called the store directly @ (563) 875-5613

good youtube piece on the history and assorted restorations of the 1701 filming model, now housed at the smithsonian

curious if anyone else struggles from this particular space-affliction:

in my childhood's mind, the enterprise 1701 is a gleaming, "pearlescent" off white. i don't know if this is because it's morphed in my kid-brain with the STTMP refit enterprise, or just the way it looked on the tv screen at the time under studio filming lights, or because all the hopelessly primitive enterprise toys i had as a kid were white or pearl white....

am i alone in this sickness?

Yes I think I do to some extent. I received my Enterprise on Monday here in the uk in virtually perfect condition. I display it high up on a shelf and it looks a real bruiser. The thing about the colour is that Tomy have really gone for the Smithsonian grey. In bright light it looks… well a bright grey. In lower light conditions it is very grey and weathered. My daughter put it rather well when she said… ‘ummm yes well Dad, it does look like it’s been round the galaxy a couple of times’. I think I would prefer a lighter grey but then it wouldn’t resemble the Smithsonian Enterprise. I also wish the lighting was up by about 500 kelvin just to take off some of the yellow push. But again it’s subjective. Like most here I’m thrilled with model and I think Tomy have done an exceptional job

No you are not sick. Lol I also remember the ship being a bit more shiny/pearlescent in some shots of the show. I have the blu rays with the new and original effects. I think some of that look comes from the fact some shots the ENTEPRISE is kinda translucent when the composed the blue screen shot with the space backdrop.

I'm guessing most have been accounted for now or they are holding the remaining ones in case of exchange......As I said a few pages back there would be a lot of resellers/Trek nerds near there descending on the physical store to grab one. Lol...when people saw what others are willing to pay on eBay for them .......it was game over.

No, I always thought it was white as a kid! In fact, I didn't know the front edge of the neck was blue until a few days ago.

No. I still look at this and think "that is too grey" I want the over lit model from the TV show :)
Of course I make this worse as my little Dinky white one is flying alongside on my shelf

As a kid sure,
Many revelations over the years,
The first one for me was the Poster Magazine that showed all those crazy markings on the bottom. Then the world got complicated. Other details emerge.
The AMT model was starting to fall short over time. I think the last secrets were finally given up with the last Smithsonian restoration.

Nice thing is there are great kits now and you can build up that kid’s low res TV screen version of the mind.

Many choose to not draw the grid lines for example on the saucer. Or omit the little turret cannon thingy.

Here's my other prebuilt one !
