Die Cast Lighted 1/350th TOS Enterprise (TOMY crowd funded)

Well it seems that everyone who has gotten it like it so far. But I don't think they will go down this road again. At least not in metal and at this price point. We shall see ..
Maybe not this price point but I would pay higher for future Trek ships. I REALLY HOPE THEY DO CONTINUE. I HOPE THE UPROAR BY SOME DOESN'T DISSUADE TOMY FROM DOING MORE SHIPS.

honestly i WISH tomy would pull the returned ships from the shelves and make a killing on the secondary market. if it gets us a 1/350 1701-a I'll do their ebay listing for them pro bono.

Do you think the demand for a 1/350 refit is there, least in the 3k backers range?

or do you think their original goal--5K--- was the true sweet spot that would've gotten us more ships?

I suspect at 3K this project broke even (at best) and was finished just to defray sunk costs in the prototype and campaign.

at this size and weight, the profit margin has to be WAY slimmer than the BTTF DeLorean, which costs, what, $400 bucks for 1/4th the metal and heft?
I think it's there. The love for the REFIT is unconditional and relished by all sci fi and trek fans. My uncle and my cousin who are huge SW fans love the REFIT and they said they would get one.

Of course I could be wrong but I think the love is there and I think they could get 5000 IF THEY OPENED IT UP TO NORTH AMERICA THIS TIME, NOT JUST THE U.S. If they put it at a price point of 800 it could be the biggest selling replica of all time. : ) IMO of course.

Sure there were people screaming and hollering but in the end there were plenty of very happy people! And I am sure the canceled orders will sell! Plus some who canceled really regret cancelling. I would love to know the exact numbers though! : )

I want them to build more Prestige Line ships! No one AND I MEAN NO ONE is building high end replica ships for prices that TOMY is offering.

The closet is MYC Sculptures and Force Laboratory. MYC has there ships in their ships in the 1200 dollar range and FL in the 600-1000 range but they are only sold in the Asia market and shipping is pricey.

FE is selling ships in the 15000 range so that's for millionaires/Billionaires.
I am glad you brought up MYC. They are hitting home runs with thier products. Here are the 2 I have. I just sold the Blockade Runner.

I wonder if it's a legal/rights issue. adding europe and canada would double the backers surely. heck, throw in japan, it's their company, after all.

It's such a no-brainer I'd imagine their hands are tied on the issue.

Also agree people would be willing to pony up $800 for a refit. They just need better exposure and marketing during the campaign. I just don't think this campaign reached enough eyeballs.

I definitely want a Refit!

I love MYC stuff but THEY SELL OUT WAY TO FAST! I tried to get the Tie last time and it sold out so fast before I could hit the return button! They need to make more and accommodate more people. I know they are limited runs but come on that limited???! LOL

Agree on the exposure problem! They did a horrible job marketing the TOS!

I don't think it's a legal/rights issue when it comes to expanding the sales territory. It may just come down to monies. Expanding into Canada, Europe and Mexico would cost more in terms of licensing fees. Maybe TOMY felt like that was just to expensive for the first time around and they wanted to see how their initial venture into high end replicas would work out for them.

I hope it was successful. Would love to know the numbers.

For anyone curious about battery life, I’ve done a couple of rough tests with both sections lit non-stop with no nacelle motors running.

Original batts that came in the box are as you would expect (not very good). About 3 hours until secondary hull was out maybe a half hour later for the saucer section.

I then put in my Amazon Basics rechargeable AAs in the secondary hull (2000mAh capacity) and AAAs in the saucer (800mAh capacity).
Secondary hull lasted just over 14 hours and the saucer cut out about 20 minutes after that. So let’s call it 14 hours non-stop run time with impulse lights on and no nacelle fan motors (just the passive twinkling mode).

Rechargeables are 1.2v/batt vs 1.5v for the standard alkaline batts, so I’m running 4.8v in each section vs 6v but I can’t say I noticed a difference in brightness (or fan speed when I turned them on after the endurance test). They likely are stepping down the voltage for many of the LEDs anyway so not unexpected. Worst case the lights might be slightly closer to scale if they actually are any dimmer.

Knowing 4.8v still looks good will make it a simple USB power connection which I still might do for the secondary hull since there is an existing small hole that will allow access to the battery compartment and won’t be noticeable with how I have mine displayed.

Saucer section is probably not worth ruining the clean lines of the ship to run a wire on the exterior.

I’ll never leave the lights on for anywhere near 14 hours at a time. I just wanted to gauge how often I would put the most fragile parts of the ship at risk (navigational deflector dish and planetary sensor array) with my clumsy hands every time I change out the batts.

I also did a quick continuity check on the battery covers (pics attached) to see how the 4 batts are connected in series in case I decide to run USB power connected to dummy AAs/AAAs. Gray lines show where the terminals are connected.

So it is okay to leave the lights on for a while?

I don't know much about lighting but was told with my MR Falcon not to leave the lights on very long.

Thanks
