Dick Tracy movie watch - information thread

Any news on this watch? This watch has always been a dream of mine. Any update would be great!

Bump!

Wondering if there's any news on this project. This is a dream prop.

To expand on the dream, I've been researching tear-downs on bluetooth earpieces to see how possible it would be to set one up inside the housing of one of these watches. Imagine a screen-accurate prop that WORKS.

A man can dream can't I? A man can dream...

Sorry for never getting back to this.
As per my requirements for this project, the maker is unable or unwilling to manufacture the watch with a real working watch face - which is the dealbreaker to me.
If anyone wants to chip in as far as reasearch goes, I could still have them do the metal body and maybe outsource someone to do the actual watch components.

The watch parts should be simple enough, as long as we could find gears small enough to fit the space. I wonder if I couldn't just get a cheap watch and cannibalize the workings. The face could be done in photoshop. Any chance of your guy doing the grille and crystal?

I have no "skills" per se to add to this project, but I've sure got massive amounts of desire for that watch, so I'll help however I can. Even one of those GTI watches would be something, but I can't find any of those for sale anywhere. (Anyoneeeee? :))

Hi all,

Just joined the forum as this thread appeared in Google.

I've been long-time obsessed with getting an accurate replica of this watch. I have several from the movie, including the GTI - which is lovely, but just not accurate enough!

Several years ago I made a solid silver replica myself with a working watch mechanism. I was as accurate as possible with dimensions etc, and copied the watch-face artwork from a close-up photo in 'making of the movie' type book.

Forgive the bad shot - this was taken years ago and scanned in!

I was pleased with the results, but not being a jeweller or watchmaker the overall finish wasn't as 'perfect' as I really wanted.

So I would love to know how this project progresses and get hold of one too!

Valentine's Day Bump! This year, give someone you love the gift they've wanted since 1931...

I'm sure there's no news here, but any chance of regrouping with a different plan of attack? If we can get the body made, the clockwork from somewhere else, etc... There's still a chance!

[edit] That's a great replica, Bobok. Mind if I ask what the mesh screen is made out of?

This is a very cool prop that I'd never really thought of before.
The official one is off in too many ways and just looks too 'modern'.
Bobok's is excellent; I would be happy to own one like that.
If someone could make a screen accurate version,
with a functioning watch and a Bluetooth connection to your cell phone,
that would be an amazing piece and would command a serious price.

I would be extremely surprised if none of our more jewelry-oriented RPFers knew a watchmaker. We need to put out the call! Run out the guns! Call together the family! Let the sleepers awaken! Raise the mizzenmast and hoist the mains'l!

It is an extremely cool-looking watch. I've got to think that there's even a cheap way to get a radio in there; got to give it some thought.

hey guys,

any word on this project, even tho the builder is unable to make a working clock portion, can we just have the metal body for the watch? Even as a static prop, im sure it would look great and I even have some small BT pieces that I could use to talk through. Really would like to get my hands on one of those watches. cheers!!

i also cant remember where i saw on this site the official movie replica watch for the dick tracy movie, does anyone still make those or are they hard to find? I missed out on these yearsssss ago and always regreted it. really hope general is able to help us dick tracy fans out! :)

I'm kind of surprised that with all the watches out there that have hands that they put into rings you can wear on your finger that it couldn't be possible to get the guts to put inside it.

Ive PM'd General Frosty meantime, but Id love to take up the challenge of doing this as a run if no-one else is taking similar steps.
I don't think it would be that hard to incorporate existing items into the watch to make it functional ( I hope!!) and I have a family into watch collecting too ;-)
There's a couple of threads on Dick Tracey Watches, which all have interest, but no-one as yet apart from GeneralFrosty has made steps...
Let me know, I don't want to tread on toes.

I don't think anything's been done that hasn't fallen apart as of yet. But if you're up for the challenge I'm in.

The strap should be easy to find, as should the watch-hands and gears. Any cheap small watch will do. The face we can generate based on the pictures. The crystal and mesh might be a problem.

I'm still intent on tearing down the smallest (cheapest) bluetooth earpiece I can find into this thing. I'll look into that but we'll need some volume measurements first to see how much space we're dealing with inside a really screen accurate watch.

Keep in mind, I'm new to all this, so I don't have a lot to offer but support, but I'm willing to experiment and figure it out.

hi,

i actually found and have the smallest bluetooth speakerphone that would fit PERFECTLY in this watch. look at the link below, it works great and is pretty loud and its small so there really would be no problem working around this to mod the watch. I really hope someone is able to make them, like the above post said, the band and watch mechanism is very easy to do on our own.

what do you guys think about this bluetooth tech im referring to? if anything, we could have a watch case built around it and then put the mesh and crystal on it and we have a nice watch we can wear!!

cheers.

bumpity bump, did general frosty every get back to anyone about the watch status? still would be cool to have. :)

Does anyone have Bobok's picture he posted? he seems to have been a one post wonder. I never got a chance to see his homemade watch. Would love for someone to repost it.
