Dick Tracy movie watch - information thread

Sorry for the poor photos, but this is a Dick Tracy watch that was offered here some years back.

If I am not mistaken, this watch was based on pics from the comic strip.

Could be. I remember that I thought it looked cool so I picked it up. Now it doesn't fit in the collection and it sits on a shelf.

I have been trying to get this made for awhile. The original jeweler had a small shop in Santa Clarita and they only made 10 watches for the film.

If you manage to get this done I am definitely in for one.

Best of luck!

So awesome. I just managed to dig out the old toy watch from storage the other day. Still works!

Very interested.

OK, here is where we stand so far:
The maker is going to provide just the main watch body so that anyone who gets one will have to supply thier own leather band (easily found at any watch repair shop) this works out well because the maker has experience in metal work and will make sure that the watch will have a universal fit for leather bands.
Right now, the maker (that is what I am going to call the individuals responsible for manufacturing this item) is asking what is the size of the watch?
I am going to seek out everyones opinion on this first before I give an answer. I think the replica should be a TAD and I mean just a SMIDGEN larger than the official movie watch as pictured by myself and another member here.
The maker is asking for dimensions for the main body as well as the watch face.
Also, if anyone here is experienced with Adobe Illustrator and can do an accurate recreation of the watch face that would help speed along the process of getting this done.
Right now, we are still looking for as much information as we can on this watch - I think the maker is satisfied with the pictures already provided and confident that an accurate recreation can be made based off those photos.
Keep the input coming...

Can someone who has the official watch post the dimensions of it? Looking at my wrist, the length of the watch would be about 2" even if corresponding with the pic I posted on the first page.

On second thought, I would be really cautious with using the official watch as a guage.

I just put together this side by side comparison for reference.

Note how off it is! The body itself is way too narrow, the watch's width and length are off, the grill is the wrong size , shape, and material, etc. Sheesh, not even the numerals on the watch face are close.

Not knocking the piece because I would be very happy to own one. Just saying if accuracy is of import right now, it's not very accurate.

Me too, but you don't get that a lot around here! :lol

:lolYou hit the nail on the head on that one! Maybe it's just the Monk in me, but I have to have it perfect or I go out of my mind!

Ok, so lets NOT settle for less with this one. Though I cannot guarantee absolute perfection (because I won't be making these myself) with some RPF help, we should be able to provide information to the maker that we are all satisfied with.
Keep the help coming...your input has been helping so far.

The dials on the watch seem to be pretty standard. I bet you you get the dimensions of those you could come up with a very good approximation for the size.

I passed by the store in Japan that used to carry specialty watches and guess what - the place had moved to Odaiba - went there and couldn't find it at all. I never really knew the name of the place i just knew where it was.

I'd very interested in one of these, particularly if it works. I don't think being a shade larger would hurt.

I would love to have a more accurate version of the original prop. I'm willing to let slide on the shape of the the numbers and the precise type of buttons, but I want a closer shape to the original. Maybe I'm a little biased as I have one of the GTI watches and I'm not blown away with it. The original prop is a little wider and a hell of a lot slimmer. Maybe as much as 50% slimmer. (GTI had to make room for the little electronic voice chingus.)

Just my opinion and I could be wrong.

D

BTW my GTI is 1" x 1 7/8" x 3/8"

I've seen this movie before. There were a few metal DT watches started but never came to fruition. I'd like to see one actually be done.

Waiting on a reply from the maker. He is currently doing some drawings and will hopefully provide me with some kind of prototype blueprint, which I will post here for everyone's approval. Then we can make any size or detail adjustments before the actual piece is manufactured.

Any news on this item? I'm very interested,

Doug
