Diablo 3 Crusader & WOTB Bezerker builds.

Hi guys! Long time lurker first time post!
I'm fairly new to prop making/costuming, I built my first costume last year a w40k Terminator after that I wanted to move onto a different franchise.

I'm building three costumes for Calgary Expo next year. I built a Malthael costume but didn't take too many photos, maybe I'll take some photos of the finished costume and post later.
Its a Wrath of the Bezerker barbarian and a Crusader.

Here are the images I'm using as inspiration:

Barbarian:
These are the weapons I'm shooting for, going to build these out of pink foam and XTC with a dowel core for strength.

This is the look of the costume.
My plan is to use mattress foam for the "lava" muscles and build the rest outa EVA foam.
Then learn to tease and style hair into "super goku mullet & beard"?

Crusader:
I LOVE this concept art and am hoping to go with a different look than most crusader builds with the rounded shoulders and Gold trimmings.
Mostly out of EVA foam and pink foam for the sheild, going to try my had at some paper mache for the weapon head!

This is the weapon I'm going for but am hoping to make it one handed.

Here are some build pics from the weekend.
I started out with the shield and swords as they are pretty key to the costume and I want to get it right.

Traced in Illustrator and made a pattern for the shield and weapons out of paper.

Foam carving... pink dust... pick dust as far as the eye can see!

I wanted to have some battle damage and arrows sticking out

Coated in XTC for durability and then did some details with Free form air.

Going for a "hammered Iron" look for the edges and the decals

This is the inside of the shield, wanted to replicate the wood look but without the weight. We'll see if its a giant failure once i get to paint.

Gold for the details. then I'll be getting in there with some white paint for the rest.

Did some paper mache this week... Bloody dry time on wet paper is quite boring.

Used Celuclay to do the details and features

Hey Guys,
Did a bunch of painting yesterday thought I'd share.
Still have some finishing touches for the shield and swords but I'm pretty happy with them.

Here's the progress on the swords.

Wanting to get some work done on that demon head today :D

Thanks! I'm really happy how it turned out. Had a lot of fun painting the wood panelling on the back.
One thing I'm considering is weather or not to paint the battle damage on the front in wood colour, theoretically the damage would show the wood under the paint... But not sure if it will look any good.

I'm getting a start on the armour this week!

Hey guys small update,
I'm terrible at taking progress photos.
But I have the shoulders blocked out and have a start on the body suit for the barbarian.

The shoulders are quite large but that's the look I'm going for ;)

I had a bunch of mattress foam lying around so I'm using that for my sweet lava 8 pack...
After shaping them I pull apart the peices with my fingers to get the texture I like.
I'll be plasti dipping to give me a paintable surface so the foam doesn't just soak up all my paint!

Working on the rest of the Crusader armour this week.

It's all looking great. The more I see of stuff from Diablo 3 the more I feel I should take a look at it.

With the raised detail on your shoulders do you carve that by knife/dremel/etc to shape or do you have another method?

Interesting effect with the mattress foam. How do you plan to give it the lava glow around it?
I'd love to know how you do your painting and what kind of paints you use. You've got a great look to the parts.

Glad you like it! Yeah D3 has a really great style to it and there's a ton of great source material!

The raised bevelled detail on the shoulders was carved by knife then cleaned up with a dremel.

For the glowing lava effect I'm going to use fabric paint to paint the areas in the middle then go over it with an airbrush to get the gradient i want.

I do my base coats with spray paint to get the metal base texture. Then go in with a black/brown wash to give depth. Then finished off with an airbrush, the wood panelling on the back of the shield was done 100% with the airbrush.

I'm hoping to get this finished in the next few weeks so I'll have a bunch of updates coming :D

Hi guys,
Have a bunch of new progress photos.

Used spray paint to get the metallic coating on the pieces. then I'll hit em with some wash and airbrush.
Things are progressing pretty damn quick on the Crusader, I'm hoping to have it finished this week then I'll get moving on the Barbarian.

Choker collar neck thingy

Thigh armour pieces.
These will be attached via elastic straps to the belt.
FullSizeRender (40).jpgFullSizeRender (35).jpgFullSizeRender (23).jpg

Arm Bands
Needs a tonne of weathering!
FullSizeRender (38).jpg

Shoulder Pads, some seams but pretty happy with the weathered look. Googley eyes are blowing my mind how much they look like screws.
FullSizeRender (37).jpgFullSizeRender (36).jpg

Got it pinned up to see how it looks.
FullSizeRender (44).jpg

Did a test on the gauntlets and got carried away making details and whatnot. I really like the red pleather.

Gave the Head a paint. Still not sure on the final look. I think I want to go darker.

More updates to come!

Hey guys,
Managed to finish and rig the costume.
Totally forgot to take photos of the tunic and belt.
Going to take a break from the costuming for a month or two. Probably have an update on the Barb yearly next year.
