Desert Hunter and Usurper Wolf paint up

I love the desert colors, Replica. Desert Preds aren't too un-common on here, but when they do show up, I'm impressed by each one, yours included. The Wolf is looking fantastic & Screen Accurate. If you aren't even trying for that look, wow. I'd be impressed to see what you do if you did try man. - That's intended as a compliment, sorry if I confused ya, loving the work!!

Thanks heaps mate! I know what you mean, and its a huge compliment! I was trying to learn more than anything, painting 1:1 latex is completely different to the small metal and resin models im used to so im very glad people are liking it!

Great work man. Both projects look awesome!

Cheers mate, glad you like!

Heres a WiP pic of the rusty Ancient bio for the Desert Hunter:

bio is lookwing sweet.. i really like the rust.. i love the grungy look on preds anyway..only ting i would do and its just me .. i would do a slightly darker layer on the rust.. show it to be aged .. it looks like its kinda fresh if you get me

damn that looks really nice. very nice job on the rust. it really looks like iron.

i am getting ready to rust up another helm, would you mind telling me what your technique is?

Yeah i get ya mate! I was going for fresh rust, like when rust gets rained on and dries. I imagine the pred stalking its prey rain, hail or shine, and i wanted a nice weathered look. I also wanted to keep with the colours of the mask with some very redish/orange colours to match the Australian outback.

I sprayed the whole mask with black, then brown, then the orange rust colour. I then got a big sponge and stippled the metal on over that, sliding the sponge up and down where i wanted scratches in the weathering and for the fresh metal showing through. I gave it a misting of copper, then black then dry-brushed a lighter silver tone on all the edges. After that i went back with a very thin, overly orange rust tone and brushed it on the places water would pool, and used a heat gun (carefully) to bake the colour on - this makes it look almost like a transparent layer with just the edges of the 'pools' turning a light orange. I then brushed on a more realistic rust colour and wiped it off after 10 min or so, just enough time for some to dry but not all.

Heres a pic of the mask after the 'baking' thing - i was going for the look of muddy water, that has dried and left the silt layer (i got the inspiration from my dirty car )

And heres a close up of the bolts. This pic still has a wet layer of matte varnish on it, so it is slightly glossier than it is now.

Could probably get the same effect using a simpler method, but i was learning as i went. This is the first time ive tried rust properly, I normally only have done it on model tanks which is very different!

Hope that helps!

Hot damn. That is one of the best "rust-ups" I've seen in a long time. That thing looks like it has been sitting in a river bed baking in the outback sun. Superb work.

Daaaaamn dude! I saw the pics posted & those 3 Rust "rivet" bolts you have are just outta this world. I've dealt with a lot of rusty metal, taking it to scrap yards, if I found that, I'd swear it had been in a junk-pile for ages.

Folks, we've got a new artist to really keep our eyes on. Jason, Lee, Larry. Watch yourselves.

Cheers mate! really glad you like it, and thats a HUGE compliment!

Got some quick snaps of the Bio on the half mask. The fit is awesome, really tight but it may look loose in some places as it would slip forward a little as nothing was holding it on. Im still trying to source the magnets, got a friend with a bunch of broken HDD's so im trying to get him to let me take the magnets out of them.
