Death Star Trooper helmet done!

Ive been at it for most of a year. I scratch-built a vac table for 2'X2' pulls and a mini for 1' X6" pulls (handy for chin cups and other little things to conserve plastic!)

Here is the prototype. All the pieces are put together to test fit.

I have since pulled better pieces and assembled a much better looking one, painted the styrene gloss to match the ABS shell. Those pics as soon as I can get them.

This was a lot of fun to make. My very first vac-forming project. I had a lot of help with advice from folks like Jeff Allen and Clive Owens. So big thanks to them!!

Let me know what you think,

it seems the fins (whatever you call the back part) are a little short? Maybe I'm way off though. It's cool you built your own vac table :thumbsup

Thanks for the kind words. The skirting in the back was off of scaled measurements, so it should be almost spot on. Might be a trick of the camera.

This is NICE!!!

I have one that I got from Marco waaaayyyy back in 1984! It isn't awful and I have had a lot of fun wearing it, but it's not completely accurate.

cool to see one of the less popular helmets getting some attention. also really cool that you built the vac table to make it on. my table build is my current obsession :)

Thank you all for the kind words :)

Yeah, the vacuum table has been a year of headache. LOL But Ive got it where I want it now. OR perhaps it has me where it wants me??

My biggest suggestion: make your heating box at LEAST 8-10 inches deep!! Mine was nearly half that and I kept burning the plastic nearest the heating elements. lol

But I made mine the Jawa way. All scrap baby :)

I'm using the proto-form plans / heater... Over/Under system, so the plastic will droop away from the heater rather than toward it. My clone armor chest is 10" deep, so I need a LOT of sag to pull it right.

Heating elements up top are good too. I built a miniature vacuum box with a plastic frame that fits in a toaster oven :) Its only about 1' X 6" and is great for small things with scrap plastic.

Anyway, the toaster oven has heating elements above the plastic and does very well with styrene. The ABS however needs a LOT of clearance between it and the heating elements above, or it burns. So keep that in mind. Give yourself several inches between your heating elements and the frame.

Armour :) I have the ambition, just not the time or experience yet. I will be a "helmet guy" for the next year yet before I can tackle large projects like a whole suit. But someday :)

I would like to do the "Protect Gear" from Jin-Roh and the other Kerberos (Kenrou Densetsu) saga. Im a huge fan of Mamoru Oshii. I will probably end up doing that before I do Star Wars armour. Its easier to cut your teeth on stuff without 100,000 intense fans who know every dimple and rivet. lol

So I have mondo respect for you guys that can do entire suits like that!!

Wow! Congrats on making one of the lesser-appreciated Imperial helmets... and one of my favourites :thumbsup
Do you have any pics of the "much better looking one" with the styrene painted gloss to match the ABS shell? :love

And do you have any plans on making these available to us less-talented Imperial Trooper fans? :angel

Top job, man!

Cheers,
John

Thanks for the kind words. I have a few people signed up on a run but interest trickles in every month or so. So I make them as folks want. No biggie. Current wait is 2-3 months.

Are you pulling ABS for these helmets? I'm interested in building one if you still offer the kits.

Is the base helmet the Navy Talker helmet? I have a pep file that I modelled myself from photos, but I've never found the accurate dimensions.

Researching the Death Star Trooper helmet lead me to this forum. Since I was a kid I wanted such a helmet! Your helmet is looking great!!!
