Death Star Plans

Thanks for your latest line drawing smithjohnj, It helped me with matching a couple of possible points.

Subway Front Alt Concept A.png

I see the large wheel having a spool-like effect on it, very similar to an old tape reel. Except instead of the spool being
opened, it's enclosed and the spokes are cutout. I also think there should be four spokes instead of the three
I mocked up.

One more tough one to go. I took some direction from @olsm and thought about hard drive internals. I did not do any detailed research as I did not want that to bias what the photos were showing me. Like last time my diagram is just to continue the discussion. I do not have any special insight.

I think you may be seeing this a little differently than it is. All of the details are not on the back face of the box. The box is actually hollow and open on the back. The wheel is on the inside wall of the box. and the silver bands are some kind of bracket that goes over the back face of the box.

That last picture looks REALLY close as a template for the outside. It looks like the inside disks could have been cut out and put on there. It has the same angled opening as the bigger disk on the prop.

Latest Greatest. The back is the hardest part so this is just what I could come up with based on two pictures. I wont bother modeling the wires in the right side window.. I'll just put those in the prop manually.

What do you guys think? Is it missing anything you guys can see?

Excellent work on the back side of the prop, like you said there isn't enough reference images to fill it in more.

So what where your final overall dimensions and are you looking at having it printed out?

Right now its 5.5 wide and 7 high plus the handle. This is all based on avg hand size of a woman i scaled everything based on that so that my wife could easily grip the handle and it would look like the pictures do. Hope that makes sense

Not sure yet, I may do a mix. We have 3d printers, cnc, laser, vac form, etc in house so I'll just use a bit of each i think. Depends on how expensive I want the master to be I suppose.

Obviously this is fun for me to figure this type of stuff out, but do you guys have interest in a prop of one? I could run them if people are interested. Seeing how we can only get so close to the actual one till the movie or more trailers come out.

I want one for sure as I suspect many will but I want to wait until the film comes out so it is accurate.

Excellent job of filling the details with so little to go on.

On the "subway" side, on the upper "hinged" element, the left hand side seems to have a linearly dappled surface like a golf ball. I "see" six divots in a row and estimate 6 rows if it was a complete cylinder. Since everything has been so symmetric the opposite end might be the same. The flat section in the middle does not have any strange reflections in the subway photo so I believe it is the same as your lower element. However I was wondering if the two element are like "the toilet paper question; over or under"? I see the bottom element clearly has the metal surface "wrap over" the top of the hinge, whereas I can image the upper gate "wraps under" which is why the hinge appear different. The top element show the "back" of the hinge" and the bottom element shows the smooth "front" on the hinge. As always I am just posing an idea to try to make things fit together when they seem to differ.

One more question on the "subway" side. I call the top and bottom elements hinged panels as they remind me of wiring guard in communications patch panel racks. Normally there are bundles of wires behind them and these gate help hold them in place until you need to add or modify things. These gate are normally hinged. They are also often attached with knurled nuts so they can be easily opened and closed without extra tools. On the top and bottom of each of these elements there seems to be a knurled nut. Since there are lots of possible nuts out there, more eyes looking to find the type that matches would be helpful if I am on the right track.

That's awesome, I'd be very interested as well.

god i can't wait for this chase scene :p

So I did change the scale a bit. 5.5 x 7 was way too small. I increased it by 1.18 which makes it 6.5x8. This feels much better in the hand and looks better. My guess is the actual one is either this size or just a hair smaller. Depending on how small the actress is.

I guesstimated that her belt is around 2.5 inches thick. Which did bring the plans to around 6.5 wide. So the DS-Plans are much bigger than the hard drives, even more so than I originally thought..
