Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Hey Darkside501st. Just another shout out for job well done. Great files and great thread. I have learned a lot. I just joined the site and am finding that I will have many new obsessions, I mean hobbies to keep me busy. This is my first post actually.

I just started my build, so wish me luck. Scaling seems to be the most dificult part so far. Just finished one lower forearm. I think I got it right on the 2nd try :)

This is my very first costume build ever. I've read the entire thread, but I am still a little unclear on what pieces need to be connected to what and using what method. I've seen Stealth's videos on web straps and velcro (great videos BTW).

Is there a description somewhere that I might have missed, maybe in other threads that explains what parts get connected where. Specifically like the abs pieces and the shoulder pieces to what, etc. I know I am a ways away from this step, but it will help me to get a gauge as to the scale and how these pieces need to fit together. Any help and insight so my first build is a success for this coming Halloween.

Also...How durable are these foam costumes for wear and use? I don't want someting that will disintegrate one night on the town. I saw Stealth's break dancing video. Not sure if this was a foam or composite costume.

Any tips in making the costume as durable as possible is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again...Having a lot of fun with this already!

Check the last few pages, I have detailed where I have connected things up, how I did the abs and also check my youtube channel for how to build the abs:

I'm hoping that posting this pic will keep me reliable, and make me focus

I'm using foam files on cardboard then I'll resin it. And yes that is a pringles can that I'm turning into a arc reactor lens. I'm going to try to post an update pic atleast once a week, please RPF keep me on task with comments, questions, criticisms...

I'm using A4 paper 160gr to printing and molding de parts for this monstruous suit, but...

...in "little things/edges" sometimes i feel like desperate, because there are to little...littleeeee...thing's to glue on. :)

Question: Can we use Foam Templates to build like the tradicional pepakura method, perhaps using some cardstock paper upper thick??? Is this a valid method???

Facebook page here i put some development photos of my suit:

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Hey Darkside. I'm really excited to get started on this and have some free time, but I do want my costume to be as accurate as possible. Are there any pieces that you think are close enough and don't intend to change significantly?

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

i am unfolding syrus 54's back ! i also change the scale from 6.2 cm to 380 wich ; based on my calculations, should be movie accurate. unfortunatly, i dont have a pep account so i am trying to figuring out for a solutions...

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Alright guys, I need some help/advice.

I've made a chest from foam so far, and it actually went reasonably well.

Then I decided to work on a lower forearm since they were easy to do with paper. This turned out to be a disaster.

Where the chest had flat connections, the forearm requires a bevel. Calling cutting those angles freehand wildly innaccurate is beyond an understatement; I have loads of asymmetries in my piece. I can post pictures if anyone wants a good laugh.

That said, what are other people doing for angle cuts? Here's the methods I'm aware of:
  • Stealth's video talking about doing a cut with scissors. This is still a freehand thing, which makes me nervous.
  • A box cutter with a metal L bracket from a hardware store. The issue I see here is that I'd have to cut on the uneven side of the foam for that angle (I have an anti-fatigue mat)
  • Using a mat cutter. It sounds like these are designed for much less thick materials, and I don't think they'd handle smaller pieces that need angels well
  • The FoamWerks bevel cutter: WC-6010 FoamWerks Foamboard Straight/Bevel Cutter. Not sure if others have had experience with this
  • A coping saw. The sawtooth blade seems like it would make a big frayed mess of the foam

Any advice?

Well.. Ive been using wat you call "free hand method" and its been working well for me.. Its doesnt created seamless but I can adjust the angel of the cut depend on the project.. As for the fore arm tat u talking bout .. I understand wat you been trough.. It took me 3 tries when I learn my mistake.. All I have to do is glue small portion and dont rush it turn out well

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

so im down to the boots, the hip pods, the hand covers and the neck seal

so far i guessed the sizes pretty good, but for the boots, i cant really use the measurement tool

so, any information on boot scaling? i have about size 11(or 45 in europe), and i am wearing old converse boots in the shoe, so they dont add a lot. how big do i size zabanas boot?

cheers

Try up 20% from the defult scale.. And use only normal paper to built the toe part of the booth.. From there you'll get the idea on the scale

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Okay...first time builder. Started with the arm, figuring that is an easy place to get my feet under me in the building process. Built both forearm pieces and am now working on the biceps. My lines and technique are already vastly improved. So I'm excited as I'm finishing putting together the bicep.

Then I get stuck on how the front and back bicep covers mate up to the main assembly. The 3d model shows the 3 parts separate so I can't see how it really goes togegther. My problem is for example with the front bicep cover. Bottom edge #75 is longer than edge #414. I'm confused why the numbers don't match up but it is the right part.

I look at some of the rendered images, and it appears that edges #413-415 on the main assembly just above the elbow joint actually recesses in bait vs. attaching to the elbow joint piece. Even if I do this the pieces won't align up and there will be a gap.

Am I missing something obvious or is one of the foam pieces ever so slightly off and I need shorten edge #75.

Any help would be appreciated. I was just getting the confidence that hey I can do this and figure this out. But if something as little as this stops me.

The back cove is even more puzzling as the trapezoidal pieces on the back cover vs. the main assembly aren't any where close. I thought maybe I was missing a piece, but the 3D rendering does show any recesses or anything. Just a nice contoured cover piece.
