Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

@Syrus: that's awesome of you to start trying modeling. I've also just started dabbling in C4D.

Are you considering modeling the back of the neck (up to bottom of helmet) with the back file? It might give a little bit of a batman (1989) head turning problems, but from the one picture it appears that the front/sides of the neck connect to that back piece.

I also think you should start your own thread. We'd all like to follow your progress, and maybe we can get some expert tips from other great digital modelers on this site/learn some cool tricks along the way.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

I have finally finished making my suit wearable. It was for a night out and needless to say, my suit disintegrated over the course of a few hours xD All joints were reinforced with 'rondo' but it wasn't enough... ah well, it's not a party suit. I'll leave that up to Tony Stark after this :D

So this link should work to my DasHHat 'artist' facebook video of the suits articulation Darkside501st. Unfortunately my friend suiting me up didn't realise there are meant to be 4 abs, the top one had eaten the one below >< ah well, the buckles came loose and can be seen, but the general workings are amazing. I have another video of the inside and how it works if anyone wants it?

Thanks for the amazing files :D

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

I can't wait to see how this piece turns out... that is pretty much how I had imagined putting it together so I am excited to see someone actually doing it. I am glad to hear that you have increased mobility. I would really like to see a video of you wearing it and demonstrating the mobility that can be achieved from this design.

Very much likewise here, in regards to the abs and how mobile one can be. Ever since I came across this whole thread months ago, I was curious how one might achieve a manner of abdominal mobility. I had conceived a similar "lobstered/overlap" method for the ab pieces in my brain, but I like how this process is developing more. I tend to overcomplicate things, and had debated using those heaver, hooked bungee cords (like for use on a car roof or motor boat), but simple elastic... DUH. Makes perfect sense, and could easily work (theoretically) with reinforced foam... I'll have to try this! Keep up the good work and keep us posted with pics/video!! :thumbsup

Once I get a couple more pieces done I'll post my own progress- have the cod, one thigh, and one shin done. Foot is next, then time just have to rinse and repeat with patterns flipped backwards!

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

sorry if someone already asked/answered but how do i attach the chest to the back(specifically near the shoulders)?... if anyone has pics that would be nice too

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

do you guys use the mk3 brace for under thechest and back, and what kind of neck do you use? i finished chest and back, abs, cod and one arm, and im kinda wondering what to use there.

They don't actually connect at the shoulder point I believe. If you look at my video recently in this thread i have the shoulders of the brace buckled to the back, and the chest of the brace to the chest peice... I connected everything to the brace and cod basically so the whole suit stays together.

Edit: This put a lot of strain on the singular buckle connecting the chest to the brace. I'm considering running 2 straps with buckles from the back to the chest (similar to the tape method) and covering it with them with the Mk6 collar bone armour plates. This should transfer all the weight to my shoulders, i was experiencing a lot of abdominal strain as I had to keep the abs from pulling together all the time. With this design, the pull should be transfered right the way round the back to the cod peice... Which is going to need a lot of strengthening, it buckled on the front after 30 minutes.

Mk6, the Mk6 files are your friend :)

I know I have asked this before, but I am running out of foam from too many trials and error. I am using 3mm foam, so at what percent do I scale the lower forearm?

You should do a test with plain paper first. I just scale my pieces when I print them if they need to be smaller. Start with 90% and keep going lower until you get something that fits. You don't need to cut all the tabs and stuff. Just a crude mockup to give you an idea of size. You will need to account for the thickness of the foam. So give yourself a little room.

Ok thank you, I will try that!

I'd wait for the V2 files if you can. The forearm and handplate don't connect properly and the forearm itself isn't quite long enough.
To get the best overall look I used these scales: bicep-21, elbow-23, forearm-25, handplate-19. (I use 23 as my default scale)

A Little Help Here!

I'd love to get a copy of these files but I can't open them. Do I have to join skydive to get them?

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

im starting to get the hang of this foam building thing. today i built a shoulder and it actually looks like i want it to. i remember 2 weeks back or so when i built my first piece, which was the biceps, i was allmost going to throw it out of the window.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

a MONTH or so !?!?
3 weeks ago he said 1 month.
lol
:cry :cry :cry

I know you guys have been waiting patiently for the version 2 files and I thought I would be able to get them done by now but there is this pesky little thing called life that keeps getting in the way, lol. I do have a full time job, a wife, and three kids. Plus my son is on the gymnastics team so we have to get him to practice 3-4 times a week and that doesn't include the Saturdays and Sundays we give up for his competitions. All that gets pretty expensive too so I do sometimes have to do side jobs to make some extra money.

I have also been working on refining my repulsor design for a friend of mine who just bought an Iron Man suit and is trying to get it ready for Dragon Con. I just finished the circuit and once I get the prototypes made I will post an interest thread in the junkyard. These are gonna rock your world!

Oh yeah, I have also been studying up on modeling techniques, tips, and tricks so that I can make the V2 files kick some serious arse.

Anyways, try to be patient and I promise you that you won't be disappointed.

Respect michael he have nice family and this goes forward :) im sure he have it done in the next time :) and his work wehre be again amazing.

Thanks, David

I think this comment is unnecessary. I would love the files too, but he's under no obligation to provide anyone anything. I believe he's providing these files without getting anything in return from any of us here. He's doing us all a favor, and has already done us a huge favor by releasing the v1 files.

Thank you for appreciating my work. ;)

As of last night I've downloaded all of these files including the extra boot and Sharkmark's helmet files to start a foam build for my 8yr old.

I haven't started yet, and probably won't for a little while, but I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with putting together these files, be it 3D construction, unfolding or foam conversion, for all their work but especially Darkside. Not only for the time and effort he has pumped into this project, but also for managing to collect and store everything that is required for a build within the one thread to cut down search time for everyone. He could have easily sat back and said "I haven't done a helmet yet, and you can just wait until I do" but instead he has offered us options outside of his own work, and even linked to them to make everyone's life that little bit easier.

Above and beyond the call mate and I thank you.

Thanks for recognizing the effort I put in to this thread to keep things organized and easy. Although, I have to say that it needs a little TLC from me when I get some time. :rolleyes

NOW, who's comments are unnessesary!?
Nice work darkside, i mean no offense to YOU.
I know how busy you've been.
As for the REST of you, take a chill pill. Just because there's no New files to play with, doesnt give you the right to start attacking people.

I don't think anyone is attacking anyone. Everyone is just saying that you should try and be a little more understanding of other people's situations and circumstances. I had given a time estimate cause everyone wanted to know how long it would be. I was wrong... I didn't have as much time as I thought I would. I will try to get this done ASAP but I am not going to rush it.

Come on guys we have all been waiting for the V2 files but its no point getting stressed over them and attacking each other. This man (Darkside)is a genius in my book and i dont care how long it takes him.
And to be honest i think we should "ALL" be paying for these files or even a donation when they arrive for the thanks and hard work he has put in

That sounds good to me, lol.

To everyone, I am sharing these files freely to anyone that wants them. That doesn't change the fact that it takes many, many hours to create these files. You guys don't have to feel obligated but if anyone wants to contribute to this project then I would graciously accept any donations. As I said earlier in this thread, anyone who does contribute will get their username/real name (if desired) on the first post as a contributor to the project. I posted information about donating in the VIP section of the first post. Thanks.

He really is xD To get this forum back on track id like to say that I have some awesome progress on the abs and their an plates. I'll be posting the pics a bit later as I aim to spend the next 3 hours or so getting them all bending and stretching properly.
Your files may be incredibly hard to build darkside501st, but parts like these abs ate pretty much genius. Once id done some sketches of them and the best way to articulate them it came together so well. Well done :p
I doubt I'll build much of the V2 files unfortunately, as I'm already tired of body filling and sanding etc. I'll definitely be looking them all over though, marvelling at how they fit together and being jealous of the lucky buggers that get to make it xD

Thanks, it means a lot that you guys appreciate my work. Thanks so much for posting that video. That is really close to what I was hoping for when I created the abs. It looks like you have quite a bit of flexibility in your midsection! Your suit is looking pretty good in that video too! I would love to get a copy of that video to put in the first post to show people what I had in mind.

A Little Help Here!

I'd love to get a copy of these files but I can't open them. Do I have to join skydive to get them?

You should be able to download all the files on my skydrive at the same time but there seems to be a problem with that function right now. You can download one at a time without any issues. If I get a chance I will put the files in a zip or rar file and load that. Once you have the pdo file you will need either Pep Viewer or Pep Designer to open them.

My Concept Back is done.. atleast, what I'm doing is...

If someone else wants to finish it, add to it, etc... go for it. It's on my MISC 3D PAGE.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

@ Syrus54 I don't really have an interest in making that back. I know you just want me to adjust your model if need be but as I said in my last post I have a lot on my table right now and I don't think I can fit anything else on without pushing something else off.

hip pods: which file do you use or do you just guesstimate?

If you are doing a foam build then you notice there isn't a hip pod foam template. It was probably never converted cause it is such a simple piece. You can use the pepakura hip pod file to get the scale right. Just use the face pieces and get rid of the side pieces.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Don't let any of the negativity get you down. I know how long modeling a suit properly takes. I think it took me almost a full year to get my file finally to a point I was happy with and I know if I were to open it up again I would want to tweak a dozen things hahah.

Real life comes first, release the files when you're happy with them, whether it's a month from now or a year from now people will be building them when you finish.
