Josh,
Thank you so mush for responding and for checking out my thread. I really appreciate it. I figured that you probably did not own the rights to that model and therefore would not be able to share it.
Thank you for the compliment on my work. You are a very talented guy. Yes, my work is based mainly on the Kotobukiya Statuette pictures and a few screencaps of the trailers. I did not have much reference material to work with and I do not have very much experience working on 3D modeling from scratch like this. It has taken me a long time to get done what I have. I have had no professional training. I just taught myself the basics by watching some youtube videos. So I have mainly just been moving around vertices, polygons, and edges to make my models. I am sure there is a better, faster way of doing it, lol.
Just out of curiosity, if you were to say modify my model or make another Iron Man model would you be able and willing to do that? Maybe if you leave some details out like the hands, boots, helmet... would that be something you would be allowed to do? If so, it is not that often that someone is nice enough to donate their time and talent like that so I would assume that you would want to charge something. What would you charge for something like that?
Also, we do have quite a few questions about the features of the suit, even after watching the movie. If you have any detailed knowledge that you would be willing to share I would love to ask you a few questions. Maybe you were privy to some interesting discussions regarding the functions and abilities of the Mark VII.
Thanks again, Mike
Hey Mike,
Sorry, I don't think I will be able to help you make another model. But if you want comments and critiques you can email me or message me here and I will give them to you. As for modeling, i probably do it similarly to how you do it. I poly modeled iron man, and lots of my other work in Maya. It looks like you're using 3ds max?
i believe the Kotobukiya Statuette is actually made from my model, so that's pretty good reference to draw from. But feel free to use my images as further reference, the turnarounds should give you most of what you need.
If you have questions about the suit, you can send them to me. I'll try to fill you in on whatever I know. Or i can ask the designer and see what his initial thoughts were.
Right now my overall comments for your suit are that the head is too big. The actual film helmet is very tight and usually only fits people that are short or have small heads. The backpack pieces feel like they come too far into the chestpiece (looking too much like war machine's collar). The flaps on the chest seem a bit small. And then the shoulder pads could probably sit a bit wider on you, which would also make you look wider, with a smaller waist, and would also make your head appear smaller.
One final note about that suit is that it was never worn as a costume and was all digital, so some pieces might not fit onto a normally proportioned human.

Josh,
Thank you so much for taking the time to help out and critique my work. I am using 3DS Max. Just so you know the model is intentionally a low poly model. They seem to work best with pepakura projects. I will take a closer look at the areas you pointed out. I am also aware that the chest shape is a little off. I need to go back and fix that too. As far as the helmet goes, Even at the size on the model I anticipate having to scale the helmet a size bigger than the rest of the body in order for it to fit. So I guess by the time I am wearing the helmet it will be 2 sizes bigger than the CG model in relation to the body. lol But what are you going to do!? Anyways, it doesn't really make a difference to the children that look at you in awe. It still puts a jaw-dropping smile on their faces to get to see their favorite movie characters come to life right in front of them. That is what makes this whole hobby worth it in the first place. I normally troop these events with guys from the 501st Legion (I am also a member). If you haven't heard of us or what we do then take a moment and look us up.
Alright, I understand about the model. I would definitely appreciate your help to further critique my model and help me figure out some missing details. I will have some questions for you on the suit. Let me compile a short list and I will shot it your way. Then I will rework my model using your answers and turnarounds. Once I have gone back over it I will contact you again to have you take another look, if that is alright. I would love to let you see my model using your 3D software so you could spin around it and take a closer look. What file extension would work best for you(3DS, OBJ, etc)?
Thanks, Mike
That is super awesome he is offering to help!!
The only question I really have at the moment is regarding the sole of the boots... is the tread pattern/design the same as the older boots, or has it also been upgraded along with the rest of the boot?
So the thing I have been building for a month now is wronglmao.

Not wrong, just not as accurate :thumbsup

Lol I Know, I was just kidding.
But his forearms look different than the ones we have? I'd this true or is it just me seeing things?
Yes, I would not have thought to ask that... It is not top on the list but a very good questions never the less. Does anyone remember if there is a view of this after...
PS- @pinder91 - Where did you get that Monster Cooler in your avatar?!? I would love to have one. I love the green glowing 'M'!
Well that really depends on your view of things. We new that there weren't very good references available to go from and that more info about the suit would be revealed after the movie came out. There are really only small details that are inaccurate. As Josh said, my model is very good and most of the panels and faces are there and mostly accurate. Which I also infer from his comments that he was impressed I was able to do this with the limited reference materials available to me. Anyways, I don't mean to toot my own horn but it wasn't easy to make this suit without detail info on what it was supposed to look like.
Honestly, the majority of the fans are not going to notice any changes I make to these files and how it might make your suit look a little different. To them you are wearing the Mark VII armor. Also, there is only a certain level of detail that can be achieved on a foam build to begin with. So I would not feel sad about having already built this suit. It was quite an accomplishment to have a 'screen accurate' foam Iron Man suit to wear to the premiere weekend of The Avengers!
Yes there is a difference in the forearm... mainly being that the handplate fits into the forearm to make it a very smooth transition as opposed to sitting on top like on the Mk III as I originally thought. If you are looking at the picture showing the forearm with the ejected rocket pods then the forearm looks very different from my model but those rocket pods were not ejected in the movie.
I knew it wasn't completely accurate lol. I was just messing around. But I have been doing full pep, no foam here lol.
I only have the chest arms and cod done. I've been waiting on the new back. Another question I have is are you going to make the jetpack detachable?
