Left shoulder is done. Recessed the top so I can make missile warheads.

Darkside can i ask you for an 2014 new year teaser gift?! ;-)

you could but you'er probably not going to get it until he starts working on it again... the V2 isn't the first priority for him right now. although we all are anxiously waiting for updates (me included) Darkside needs this time to focus on other more important thing's

I sincerely hope all is well with 'Darkside' and he can return quickly to this project.

I take this opportunity to wish Michael a HUGE 2014 and for those he love most.

I wish the same for 'Darkside' work fans and members of this fantastic community! :)

hi guys I have another noob question,
When Im hot gluing together the pep pieces, put glue on the tab and then join the 2 pieces, but Im finding its hard to get a good line and that glue seeps through which will be a pain during sanding. Is there a better way of gluing? Should I just be hot gluing the back of the pieces?
Thanks and sorry for the noobish question

Have you tried using super glue gel instead of hot glue? That's what I use, and I love it.

So with super glue do you glue the tabs? Im imagining glue would still seep through when you hold the pieces together

You use a very small amount. A little dab will do. Put it on the tab and line the numbers up (I print out the numbers too). You'll have a couple seconds to line it up. Use a paper towel to wipe any excess glue.

When your joining 2 pieces together, and there are 4 tabs on one of the pieces, do you put glue on 4 tabs at once or glue each tab at a time?

I'm very meticulous about my peps. I like to make sure it's lining up perfectly, so I do mine every single tab, for the most part. Sometimes I will glue every other tab, then go back and do the in between tabs because it's easier to line them up at that point.

Ok, I finally finished 'glassing my helmet. I've learnt lots of things about pepping thus far:
  • Fibreglass and resin is *really* messy. Seriously. I'm glad I didn't do it in my flat.
  • Wearing a respirator, eye protection and full body suit makes you look awesome and not at all like a meth cook
  • If I had to do this mask again, I'd strongly think about doing it 3-piecemeal instead of doing it all as one big helmet
Overall I'm satisfied with the outcome thus far - I'm not ecstatic, but I think at this point there's enough of a base to be able to work on.
Next steps:
  • Get rid of the excess fibreglass around the edges, and sand down the inside.
  • Sand the outside coarsely
  • Fix up any egregious gappy bits
  • Add a body filler layer (Isopon P38 in my case) to the outside
  • etc

Yeah, when I pep, I lay a small small bead then melt/smear it out with the tip of the gun, just the tip, just to see how it feels :)

Sorry guys , I keep having these noob moments! I plan on leaving the eyes open, should I still glue the pieces over the eyes for rigidity when fiber glassing?
Thanks!

I debated skipping that piece during my current pep, but to be honest I'm glad I didn't. It helps shape the entire eye socket area. Like Joshvanrad said, just cut them out after you resin/glass :)

so darkside.. you didn't answer the big question ;)
how's the modelling going ? :)
perhaps a teaser ?!

Yes, sylvester86 is right. I have so much going on right now. I have to put a lot of time in my personal life and I am still working on getting caught up with paid orders. I might be able to start this back up in a month or so but no promises, lol. Maybe I will get in and do a little at a time when I have a few minutes (hours) to spare.

Thank you for the well wishes and I return them and hope all is well for the new year with everyone here. ;)

I would. I would cut the openings after you get it all glassed and it's well cured.

I started out with hot glue but it was messy, too bulky which threw off my peps, and I kept burning myself, lol. I tried white glue, but it took forever to dry and made the pep soggy. I switched to superglue and used just a dab as mentioned. The one I found that worked the best was the ultra gel control stuff by loctite. I used that for a long time but the superglue got all over my fingers no matter how careful I was. So I tried Aleene's Tacky Glue and that has been the best stuff I have tried yet. I have been using that for a couple years now. It is like white glue but thicker (less water) so it doesn't make the pep soggy, it dries quickly but gives you a little more time to position the tabs when compared to the superglue, and the best part yet is that it washes off your fingers unlike superglue.

I actually use glue sticks. It gets on my fingers sometimes but easily washers/rubs off. I then go back and use the gel super glue or what works even better is super glue that comes with a brush applicator. Once the glue stick is set I brush some super glue on both sides of the join (inside and out) and it works great. I've used hot glue to join the pieces of the helmet together (face, jaw and helmet) but that's it. I've done an entire forearm 3 helmets this way and haven't had any issues with it.

Also, because I live in a condo I had to find non-toxic alternatives and they work great. I've been using Smooth-Cast and Smooth-on free form sculpt putty. both are non-toxic and work really well. The smooth cast can indeed make a mess and pretty much ruins what ever you use to apply it. Bought packs of small cheap paint brushes and it works. 7 minutes is a surprisingly small amount of time to get a couple coats on.

I just want to say - I probably would never have taken on this project (as much as I've always wanted to) if it wasn't for Darksides' post and all his hard work. Thank you and I wish you and awesome and amazing 2014!!!

Matt
