Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

About polyester resin (aka bondo). I bought a resin, haven't open the 5l can yet but seems a bit too liquid (low viscosity, density 1.1). So don't seem to be a good one to use as bondo. Plus, it's pre-catalysed so I'm afraid I can't even use it anymore as I bought it more than 3 months ago.

I searched for a good polyester resin available in Belgium and I found the Motip one:

Putty - MOTIP DUPLI GROUP

To avoid the same mistake and buying the wrong one, which one shoud I use? The simple Polyester Resin or the Putty? Or maybe the two, one for the main work and the second one for the finish, fill the small imperfections,...

Thanks for the wise advices! :)

It sounds like you bought polyester resin, and not Bondo (Bondo itself is actually resin and additives that make it form into the thicker 'putty'). I've never used a precatalyzed resin, but I would think if it is unopened you should still be OK? Anyways I use just resin (like shown in Stealth's tutorials) to coat the parts and strengthen with fiberglass cloth.
On to the Bondo, or 'filler' (or putty :D). Fillers come in all kinds of different mixtures, depending on what you are using it for. If your parts are already strengthened, you should use a lightweight or featherlight filler. These sand easier than regular fillers, saving a lot of elbow grease. After you've smoothed and sanded your part, pinholes can be filled with filling putty (sold in tubes) by hand, or you can just prime, sand, repeat until you're happy. Sorry I can't recommend brands in Belgium, I use Evercoat here in the USA.

I also can't stress enough that the kind of filler you buy will determine the difficulty of sanding. There are heavy duty fillers, fiberglass-reinforced fillers, etc. that are very strong, but they are very difficult to sand. In a lightweight filler, you are sacrificing some of the strength for ease of sanding, but if you've already strengthened your part with resin and fiberglass you should be fine. Just remember that these lightweight fillers are for making your parts look good, not necessarily strong.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

Thanks for your answer! I got a filler but I'll give a try with the first resin I bought. Just to try but I think the low viscosity isn't foreseen for filling.

I got a simple putty to repair car body, easy to sand so I'm good even if my first resin doesn't work.

Now I have to find the accurate colors spraycans. Hope I won't have to order these on the internet.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

Well, finished everything but the ear pods tonight, but lo and behold, it starts storming, with an 80% chance of rain tomorrow.

woo.... no resin for me this weekend. :/

I like this model, but is there a way to make more tabs for a more sturdy creation? there were lots of spots where they were no tabs to connect pieces together.

I may not need them, I guess, if its the right size, but still....

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

Finished the "shoulder" part of the back today. The small grooves and the confined space doesn't make the job easy.

But it's done. Now, time to finish the right part of this back!

Nice job!

I will start the back this week, I will use the same version that you, and I thought that the chest was difficult, but the back... I saw some pictures from you and I would like to ask, where did find the neck and the necklace? Could you share a link with the files?

Thank's

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

The back is, so far, the most difficult piece I've done (and not even completely done yet ^^). But I haven't done the Zabana's glove yet! :D

Thanks for the cheers!

For your questions:

Brace file is from robo3687. You can find it there:
http://www.therpf.com/f24/robo3687s-iron-man-pep-files-sd-war-88147/

You'll find lots of files for MK4 and 6 armors. This is the brace in folder Mark 4-6: brace and collar plates. Robo's files are on the same scale than Darkside's. So, it's easy to scale those. The brace keep the chest in the good position.

The neck piece is from Dancin_fool. You can find the file here:
http://www.therpf.com/f24/dancinfools-iron-man-mark-iii-pep-files-101543/

It's the neck of the MK3 armor so it's not completely accurate (I liked the details though). You can find the accurate neck on page 45 (modeled by Eye of Sauron) in this thread. You'll find the foam version in this thread (page 45 or 46) and the pepakura version thanks to Streetsoul there:

Can you explain a little more of what you want. I don't really understand. Are you talking about the support bars?

Looks good man, sorry it is so hard to make, lol

V2 will not be so difficult.

yeh the gloves are hard as hell lol but im half way through making the fingers at the min lol :) time consuming tho and syrus's gloves are awsome and thanks for the shout out about the neck unfold :) was a bit of a pain to unfold but be worth it although im finding it hard to scale due to the extra wrist armor

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

I can make the wrist section bigger, if you need?

No one ever communicates with me about my files. They just download and run.

If people were a little more Contributing, instead of Grabby, we could colaborate and make the files the way they need to be made.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

I'll keep it in my sleeve! Looks really cool, especially with the wrist part. Thanks buddy!

No problem there! I'm a man of challenge. I want to have the flaps motorized so I chose the detailed back. I knew that it is not easy. This is my first pep ever so it's a bit slower...but patience and perseverance is the way to go. If I wanted to go more quickly and a bit easier, I would have chosen foam version.

And if I build a V2 file, I'll definitely choose the HD build, so I guess that won't be that easy ;)

time consuming tho and syrus's gloves are awsome and thanks for the shout out about the neck unfold

You're welcome, you get the merrit you deserve!

Oh, that's a common problem and not only in the costuming world. I did a bit of fansubbing, I moderated a warhammer forum and did some other things inside different "communities" and it's everywhere the same. People think they own the right to take anything without a single "Thank you". :darnkids:darnkids:darnkids Even on this thread we see people who don't even care to read the first post for simple instructions (PM for password).

Sadly, I'm really new in the "pep world" and I have no knowledge in modelling or unfolding to help you guys to make it easier for the rest of us but I'm always happy to discuss about problem I encountered. Being new also imply I think I did something wrong before there is a problem with the file :D

You should post that in your thread, maybe you will get some feedback.

This is a common problem... I would like to think that people are not so grabby as described... but rather they just do not know how to help. There are some advanced theories in Pep work... at it's core it is a simple process but there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff that gets overlooked. Most people will only be able to point out problems that they encounter while building it. Some may not no if it is a problem with the file or just the way they built it... they might think that they did something wrong. Plus, some people might think it is rude to go back to the person that is freely sharing pep files and tell them that there is a problem with his/her work.

So feedback is a little hard to come by for sure.

I think he's talking about some of the solid lines which you are instructed to cut but don't have any tabs to connect the part back together. To answer the question, on those parts I think its just better to score the lines so they can fold. Either way they're very minor details.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

Newtype 2099- Darkside posted a video about making the pep build cleaner although I think it will work in your situation. Basically on seams where there isn't a tab you can cut out a spare piece of the same card stock and glue it on the under side. Stick it to both sides and voila, your gap has been bridged by card :)

By the way thanks for making that video Mike, don't think I got around to thanking you :D

So, it sound like there are errors on one or more of the unfolds... am I understanding that correctly? You can add the tabs back in using Pep Designer. You can even put tabs on edges that are not connected to anything if you want.

Very true, it sounds like this would be a solution to the issue. Thank you for thanking me. ;) It was my pleasure to do the video. But I wont be using my laptop webcam for videos anymore... that thing was way too lo-res.

@Devilflash,

Thank's very much...

I wasn't even thinking in brace and it is necessary, right? I think that the Mark IV brace could be the correct one to be used due to the geometry of the Arc reactor. Does the Mark IV brace fit good in the Mark VII costume or I will need to do some adjustments? Can I use the same scale used in Mark VII chest?
