Dalek featured on 1999 stamp

A few years ago when my husband was at a local garage he noticed they had a dalek sitting in the corner. He was told it belonged to a local counsellor who was considering getting it re-sprayed due to damage, he also said it was an original prop from the old series and that sparked my interest. I got in touch with the who counsellor said it was from the original series used on screen and it was the one featured on the 1999 stamp. Needless to say I was looking for any excuse to go to the garage at this point but I saw an article in my local paper this week He has finally decided to put it up for auction but before this he is displaying it at my local library (Bonnybridge, Scotland) today from 5-7pm.

I was wondering if any of the whovians on the site want any pictures of anything in particular? Will be taking as many pictures as I can anyway but just thought I better see if anyone wants anything special.

Poor old thing has seen better days but was good to see it before it headed off to auction. Think it needs a lot of TLC.

It didn't turn out well in the picture but through the mesh on the head is actually Colin Bakers signature from when he signed it on set.

Thanks for the prompt response much appreciated. :thumbsup

A friend of mine alerted me to this post on this forum.

In case anyone else views this I'd like to point out that I am a 'DALEK officiando' and collector.

Sadly, the particuler Dalek shown in the photos is DEFINITELY NOT the Dalek used on the stamp and is simply a 'fan built inaccurate Dalek'.

The company who made the Dalek for the Millennium Stamp were 'this planet earth ltd' this planet earth ltd HOME a little dot in a big space

The Dalek was photographed by Lord Snowdon prior to the stamp release. Your photos show a completely different Dalek.

this planet earth ltd supplied this Dalek (moulded from an original BBC prop) for the stamp (see their website) this particular Dalek is still owned by the company owner called Ian Clarke. Search the internet and you'll find photos of him with this and also in a recent interview he has confirmed this is still in his possession.

They were licensed by BBC Worldwide to manufacture Daleks from 1994 to the present date. They only made the Remembrance Daleks until late 1999 when the now 'infamous Toby Chamberlain - Mister Dalek as he is known in fandom) joined them and they expanded their range to include the earlier Daleks which they still successfully supply.

I don't want to 'belittle' your post but I think it's important that anyone chancing on this post on this forum know that the Dalek here DEFINITELY ISN'T THE ONE' from the stamp.

If in doubt email Ian Clarke at this planet earth ltd HOME a little dot in a big space

this is a great forum :) keep collecting but make sure it's real :)

Wow thanks for that. I have to wonder about the auction now and what it's being sold as since it's back story is false. It is autographed on the inside but knowing he has already lied about it I'm not even sure that was real.

This is why we shouldn't trust politicians. Saying that the guy is nuts, he wanted to market our town for ufo hunters and proposed to the council to open a theme park.

Next big scottish auction for collectibles is coming up in glasgow might be for sale there http://www.greatwesternauctions.com seems about the right time for it to go to be in the catalogue. I will fire the counsellor a email asking again for details of the auction. He is normally keen to talk about it.

I am also a Dalek collector ( Yes, i own a real one), and i have to agree with LeasureHive. All the screen used Daleks are well documented and their whereabouts is well known. The Dalek you see there is a highly inaccurate fan built one, made from the plans that were given free in the Radio Times in 1973. A few fans do think they have a certain charm though and do collect them, but they are worth nothing.

It doesn't look like it is based on the Radio Times plans, they look much more conical in overall shape, like this. I think I recognise the skirt, looks like the hemispheres are part of the overall casting.

The thing that really sticks out as "wrong" for me is the neck - it should be slightly conical, so the three rings should be different diameters. If you were to get replace the neck (and probably the dome as well, depending on its size) with something more like the original props, and do a bit of tidying and minor replacing here and there (simple stuff like the correct bell-shaped plunger), you could end up with a reasonably decent-looking replica. OK, it might not be "right" or "accurate", but it would look ... Dalek-y, if you know what I mean!
