Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build - FINAL p.20!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

amazing work, can't wait to to see the completed visor

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Thanks for the kind words guys! Really looking forward to rocking the chrome bucket at Dragon*Con this year.

I did several visor pulls in different tints to get a few variations. These were dyed with RIT dye - the final result has a slightly reddish tint to it; not entirely intentional, but somewhat canon to some of the Discovery-era reference.

In this shot, the LED matrix is mounted behind the visor. Sometimes its more visible than others, but for the most part its largely obscured.

Unfortunately, its not all good news. my 8x40 array was a bit over-ambitious, and the fancy side lighting for the corners of the visor had to be shelved for this version. In their place, I'll be installing static-on color bars like below.

I'm tossing these together for DC, so the circuitry is admittedly more rushed than the rest of the work in the helmet. Unfortunate, but deadlines are pretty unforgiving at the moment...

On the inside of the right ear cup, there are 4 switches - left-to-right, they are the master power switch, Arduino and matrix, vent fans, and ear/corner visor lighting.

I decided to scrap the linear voltage regulator in favor of a pre-made switching one from Pololu. Up to 24V input at 7A current rated. Should do fine!

Lastly, I needed a mount for the yellowjacket arduino. There are no mounting holes, so I vacformed a small cover for it.

All of the above pieces should be mounted tomorrow, and (fingers crossed) we might have some blinky light action by Saturday!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

such nice wiring work, nice and clean ! I'm gonna ask my friend who's going to get your autograph !

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

I just bought the Discovery album on vinyl, and on the record jacket is a large picture of the clearest shot of the wrist controller i've ever seen. I'm going to scan it later today.

edit: here it is

So, for the past few days I've been sorting out this mess. Oddly enough, despite having many more LEDs than my Guy helmet, the wiring for this piece was far simpler, at least in the "soldering stuff into the helmet" phase. I think I can streamline this even further in the future by making all of the chips native on one board. Always room for improvement, I guess.

Voltage regulator and Arduino tucked away on the back of the helmet, trying to keep them as far away from heat and sweat as possible. The braided line is the main power cord which runs to the LiPo battery

Switch panel works well, and is fairly easily accessible even while wearing the helmet. Kind of wish I had a labelmaker so these would be marked, but not like I can read them with the bucket on my head anyways.

The fans pull a huge amount of air into the helmet. Problem is, they are sort of aimed directly up into my forehead, which dries out my contacts a bit. Luckily, I can wear the helmet with my glasses (!!!) very comfortably.

Some illumination tests - still don't have the final code yet, but I'll post a few videos when all is up and running.

Finally, because you need the entire ensemble, Thomas Gloves!

Dragon*Con looms on the horizon, and I'm about 99% done - this might just get pulled off after all!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Great update!

Your helmet looks so much cleaner than the original discovery helmet, it really is better than the real thing.

Its too bad there wasn't room for the corner equalizer lights, but I think the larger matrix looks really sharp.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

That's awesome how good that looks! Great work Harrison!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

looks awesome

Have you coated the inside in rubber? or just black spray paint?

Just started molding my helmet... so far so gooooo......d

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build
