Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build
Thanks for the kind words guys! Really looking forward to rocking the chrome bucket at Dragon*Con this year.
I did several visor pulls in different tints to get a few variations. These were dyed with RIT dye - the final result has a slightly reddish tint to it; not entirely intentional, but somewhat canon to some of the Discovery-era reference.
In this shot, the LED matrix is mounted behind the visor. Sometimes its more visible than others, but for the most part its largely obscured.
Unfortunately, its not all good news. my 8x40 array was a bit over-ambitious, and the fancy side lighting for the corners of the visor had to be shelved for this version. In their place, I'll be installing static-on color bars like below.
I'm tossing these together for DC, so the circuitry is admittedly more rushed than the rest of the work in the helmet. Unfortunate, but deadlines are pretty unforgiving at the moment...
On the inside of the right ear cup, there are 4 switches - left-to-right, they are the master power switch, Arduino and matrix, vent fans, and ear/corner visor lighting.
I decided to scrap the linear voltage regulator in favor of a pre-made switching one from Pololu. Up to 24V input at 7A current rated. Should do fine!
Lastly, I needed a mount for the yellowjacket arduino. There are no mounting holes, so I vacformed a small cover for it.
All of the above pieces should be mounted tomorrow, and (fingers crossed) we might have some blinky light action by Saturday!
