Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build - FINAL p.20!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Volpin....I love you man. I hope one day soon you will have the Tron version of Guy's helmet done so I can buy it! :) Your work is beyond awesome. I'm way too lazy to attempt these kind of projects. Keep up the good work and keep posting pix.

Red Bull has been around for a long time. I've been drinking Red Bull since before it was even FDA approved and they used to have "sticker" labels on them. :lol

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

I just came across this picture as a result of a chart I made that was published over on Gizmodo.

Very cool. It's interesting that the light bars seem to have been made almost the exact same way that Volpin went about it.

Shame those are just for Guy, it looks like Thomas was being worked on at the time. Although I don't think they'd provide any practical help in Volpins build I still like looking at them.

Agreed, I posted these pictures more so for others to see more than to help Volpin. As you said, hes more or less been there and done that!

I sent a message to the gentlemen to see if he would be willing to share anymore information or photos. I'll let you all know if anything comes of it.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Were they able to see out of those original helmets?

Also, amazing work Volpin. Inspiring every step of the way.

I forget where but some interview where they talked about it said they had pinholes to see out of.

It's pretty clear why they got rid of the complex effects. It was cool and worked for the music videos and the rare interviews, but I can only imagine the hassle it must have been. Heck, IMO even the castings of the old helmets were messy and looked bad up close.

However, given what Volpin was able to do with the effects on his, and how compact he was able to keep the cables and controller boards, I have to wonder why they haven't tried going back to them. Surely theres better technology today.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've fantasized about them coming out on stage to accept an award, and something similar, and once they're at the podium their helmets light up just like they used to.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Red bull was created in 1987 in Austria, it entered the US market around 1997
it really comes from Korea-The owner in Austria made a deal with the original inventor of the formula

Keep rockn the build

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Wow...this helmet looks spectacular. Really mindblowing....

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

What did you use to tint the resin? I'm always tempted to use food coloring but I could never get a clear answer to if it worked or not

Smooth-On makes a resin dye called "So Strong Tint" - I've been using that stuff in my castings. Works great!

Harrison, I'm sure you'll end up making this look effortless as always. :lol

Hah! If it looks easy, I don't know what I'm doing to make it that way. So far I'm moving a lot faster than the first version. To get to a decent base took me a week easy on Guy, hoping Thomas moves faster.

Unbelievably awesome, Harrison! Can't wait for more progress pics!

Heh, I think you guys are giving my little lump of resin far too much credit, but thanks regardless! Should be slinging some bondo on it tomorrow.

I just came across this picture as a result of a chart I made that was published over on Gizmodo.

The guy who posted this says he knows one of the guys who made the original helmets, and posted this picture as proof. I have never seen this picture before and though it was worth posting here!

Wow... those cables are intense. Makes me feel pretty small time about the electronics in my rig. Wish I could have seen these back when I was building the lights for mine. Definitely would have helped in the planning process.

If you get any more (Thomas would be great to see) please share. These are amazing shots.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

You know, I always kinda liked Thomas more with the little smile.

We give you credit because we know what you do with the stuff. Now it may be a "lump of resin," but in a few months it's going to be a fully functional high quality Daft Punk helmet. :love

Thanks for posting this! Do you mind if I repost it elsewhere?

I'd actually prefer you didn't, if you don't mind. I have had issues in the past with people taking credit for my blueprints - this is why I have them locked to only small resolution on flickr.

I don't have any claims to the design of the DP helmets, so i realize this is sort of me being protective over something I don't own, but I hope you understand. If I recall, you had some similar issues with your pep files a while back, didn't you?

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

More extensive update to follow, but I've had some fun with the ol' sanding block these past few days...

Definitely streamlining my process from the last build. Getting to this step before would have taken me weeks last time. Horray for progress!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

I've been following your photo-log on Facebook and Flickr, and I have to say: Stop being so fast! :lol

You've actually really lit a fire under me to work on my helmet though. I've spent free time I've had over the last few days shaping and smoothing various parts.

So thanks for giving me a much needed push, and keep up your awesome work.

...also, thanks for showing me how I SHOULD do things next time. Your methods always seem so logical AFTER I've seen them.

-Nick

EDIT: Looks like you posted while I was typing. See what I mean about being so fast? You even POST faster than me. :p

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Amazing progress! Not sure if you check your PMs here but I sent you one the other day about getting some free chroming with Alsa ;)

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

"Part baseball helmet, part Geordi La Forge."

That made me laugh.

Like Nick said, I can't believe how quickly this build is going! Keep up the good work!

I should have clarified that I was excited that you were finally working on the Thomas helmet. LOL

Just curious, how thick are those pieces of styrene?

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build
