Cyberman Mark VII Helmet Build

Now that I have finished my Classic Mark Savage Cyberman helmet (http://www.therpf.com/f24/classic-cyberman-helmet-148091/), my eyes are firmly set upon the Mark VII by Lee Sullivan.



I started with the ear muffs. Vac formed in plastic. I made MDF blocks that stacked together. All I had to do to made the opposite side was to flip them over and do another draw.

I'm using a blue styrene which I've never used before, but it is coming up with great results. I will see if it will take resin, a bit like surf board poly does? Anyone have any ideas?

This styrene stuff is great to work with. This is the result after two days.

It is very cool, if you don't mind me asking which Cyberman is it based on? I saw your other thread and I was very impressed that you did all the classic versions. Was this from that cartoon 6th Doctor Cyberman story on the Doctor Who Website? I'd love to see a picture of the reference image your using. Excellent work!!!

I'm pretty sure that's from a Doctor Who site Web series with the 6th Doctor. Very cool!!!

Although the blue poly is great to start with, adding detail is problematic, so I have reverted to the old tried and trusted clay. The good news is that the blue poly accepts the clay really well. Now I can build upon what I already have and start with the finer details.

Well I tried some resin on the styrene and it melted! Doh!

So now it's back to the tried and true method. One of the things I am contemplating is to vac form each side of the mask and then glue it together. I have always found cleaning up a seam on a large flat area a lot easier than cleaning up an edge.



I'm not particularly good at smoothing the clay so I may make a plaster positive and then smooth that and then vac form from there.

Here's me jumping the gun again. I moulded the front part of the face and made a plaster positive.

I sanded the plaster down and am now trying to get out all the lumps and bumps. Working with the plaster is much easier than trying to get the newclay smooth. My plan is to mould all the parts seperately and vac form a helmet. And here's where I jumped the gun.



Ta daa... Yes I vac formed the head just to see what it would look like. It still needs some smoothing and filling etc but I'me really pleased with the result.

This looks great ! Next time you try the foam , coat the piece in white house glue and then apply the resin to that . Great tutorial on youtube about that ! Keep up the good work !

I've pulled some vac formed plastic shells of the mask.


It's so nice to see the plastic form around the plaster positive and give you a beautiful smooth and rounded finish. This one will be mirror smooth I hope when it is finished. I have to build my skills at plastering and vac forming so I can pull the plastic it two pieces (Or three) instead of what I have done.



The way I'm working there is still a bit of filling and sanding to be done where as I would love to be able to take a couples of pulls and just glue them together. It's quite quick though.

I've painted it in spray putty and filled the edges with car putty. I want this one to be as smooth as. I will also look into getting some of that "chrome" spray paint. Using the vac former has reduced the build time by about half so far. It could really only be used for certain designs.

Coming along nicely. I've started adding some periferal features like the ear brackets. More sanding and painting. Currently looks to fat. Maybe to big, or I'm going to have to find a huge guy to wear it (That would be right for a Cyberman). I know a couple of giants... hmm
