Cyberman in FOAM!!! - WITH PATTERNS!!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

The pattern makes sense the more I compare it to the finished product on page 5. I might have time to dig thought the garage scrap corner (I never throw anything away, much to my wife's chagrin) and see if I can come up with enough pieces to give it a try next week.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Wondersquid, hi. I am very interested in replicating this same costume, and yours is really good. I can see myself making something like that, not only via your patterns, but also via the reference material you seem to have, such as the one you, Scouser and Scifidelity have, and noticing that it is impossible to get the magazine where I live, which is in Brasília, Brasil, one of the main reasons being that my own credit card was cancelled, but they also aren´t keen on shipping thing here, so I would ask for any of you three - Is there any possibility to distribute at least on the RPF the scans to facilitate the task of making these armors?

If the order is too tall, I would ask for a more personal request, that is, if any of you could e-mail me at least something I could start work on, for without it, I will have to replicate Wondersquid´s suit, and I am quite sure it´d be at least a generation away from the source material. My e-mail is hermesiii at gmail dot com, should it be the case.

Again, thank you guys so much. I hope to be able to join the Cybermen in the near future, thanks to you :)

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Any question? Anyone? Bueller?

Hello wondersquid. First I love this build. Second the Cybermen are one of my all time faves. As I am looking at your templates for the Cybershade. I was wondering if the markings you have on there are in reference to the size of the foam? If so then I think your templates will be pretty easy for me to understand.

I don't know about most others. But perhaps numbering the pieces the same way you would in a pep file. And also marking the size of the foam on the paper itself, as opposed to right on the actual pieces. An example would be the fingers. Have the templates on a sheet. And on the sheet write the size of foam recommended.

But as I have said for me, I would love the templates as they are.

The model magazine in my opinion is great for back story on the build and what they did to make it, but it really is not much help in a cheaper build like most of us are doing. I bought it for the reference pics mostly (but then learned to love the articles) for the gloves which shows them from different angles. Other pics in it really are not much of a help that I have noticed. I don't have a way to scan the magazine, but if you want a copy of the pics, I may be able to just take a pic of the page and add it to a post if that helps. That would not be against any rules here would it?

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Here are the Black and White scans I did from before, if I can find the time, I will try to scan them in color, but I think this will give everyone an idea of what we're talking about.

Wow, thanks for posting those pages...it was fun to read and informative for sure..

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Thanks so much for sharing all of your progress photos and the magazine pages! My friend (Ktar here on the RPF) and I are planning Cybermen costumes, and it's good to see that it really can be done in foam. It will allow us to make them a lot sooner than we expected. We were originally going to try out hand at vacuum forming to make these, but we really don't have any experience with that, haha

I can't wait to see the 100% version!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

WOW! (on the glove and DOUBLE Wow on the article!! I had NO idea it was so detailed, and now I´m even MORE excited to make it, believe you me!)

Thank you very much, Wondersquid! I´ll make sure to print these out in the largest paperI can so I can try and recreate all of the detail. I am a recent Whovian and , as all recent addicts to something do, I am most eager to capture this excitement, and even though I joined recently the Dalek Project, this seems much more up my alley!

Again, thank you immensely and congratulations on an amazing job! :)

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

This stuff looks even more solid in person. I think the light shows up more of the shadows, too, so it accentuates all of the contrasting smooth and dull surfaces.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

OK, bigger update! The under-suit tubing!! Originally I was going to glue this straight to a full body under-suit, but my wife suggested just doing small necessary sections. So in this case I create a base out of cloth, seamed on the two long sides.

Now I bought etha-foam tubing, it's that stuff at the hardware store for sealing your windows and walls, you use it to fill a corner and then caulk over it, therby using less caulk. But I digress, I bought three different diameters of the stuff and carefully sliced them in half.

Then I glued them down to the base cloth in a cyber-esk pattern. Like alot of foam built stuff you layer things, this was first the largest diameter (1/2" I think)
2012-02-09190818.jpg

Then I finished with a smaller diameter (1/4" I'm pretty sure)
2012-02-09192719.jpg

I finished up with detail burned in with a soldering iron, then I brushed more glue onto the cloth areas to help seal them and gave it a few coats of plasti-dip black.

Next up I'm going to sew the seams together to create a tube and then paint it. can't wait, almost there!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Question for Wondersquid..
I finally picked up 12 of these harbor freight foam pads but after close inspection ive noticed that some have what i would call really bad bubble blemishes as seen in these photos.. im wondering if sealing them will cover these holes or not?? Surely you have run across this problem and have the answer that i seek. I do not wish to have them show in the final paint job, if can be helped.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Hey Cybermanguy, I wish i had good news, but the trade off of buying foam cheap is that the material is cheaply made. When I was using the mats, i tried to cut around the larger blemishes, but ultimately if you want really smooth, yeah your going to have to fill in the holes. I use a mixture of latex rubber and cabosil, the latex is mask making slip latex, should be able to get that from Burman industries, or a make FX supplier. The cabosil should come from the same supplier, basically it's like a thickening agent that makes the latex become like spackling putty, and you use it just like fixing holes in your wall. It's tedious, but if your careful the results are amazing.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Thanks for the info...for now i did cut around the blemishes.
Ive completed my first Foam piece today..
The "cod-or butt" piece, working with foam is new to me but this is what i came up with.
I hope you dont mind me posting images on your thread.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

Not at all, I want people to show their work and we can hopefully make this a cyberman haven. It looks good, can I suggest that you cut out the front vent details with an xacto knife, they look a little uneven. And maybe back them with a foam piece to support their shape. Keep going!:)

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

I will post a closer view of them here...they werent the easiest things to cut out
i think it might be possible to clean it up a little...

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!!

If the foam on material does not work out, you can always try to work with latex like I did. I have not painted it yet since it is way too cold in Minn., but it is basically ready. There are a few ways to doing the suit, this is just what I am most comfortable with. I have some other plans for it too outside of the typical under suit, but that is another story. I have never posted any of my build up here on these forums, figure I will one day when it is a bit farther then it is now. I am not doing foam, so takes a bit longer. I plan to make gloves in the near future that will hopefully be as detailed as this is. I have just been too busy to cast some hands to work with.

Here is what it looks like to give you an idea.
