Cowboys & Aliens - Jake Lonergan Gauntlet Weapon

Ain't patina on the surface. That's case color hardening, an alchemic technique in creating a glass-hard, high-carbon protective surface on low-carbon steel, commonly used on firearms at the time and is still used today. The rainbow of colors is just a byproduct and is often simulated cheaply using chemical etching. On non-ferrous materials, it can only be done through a laborious paintjob with air brushing and wet sanding. However I've a cheap way of simulating it with spray paint using several layers of base color paints (silver, gold, black optional red and blue) half dried then swirled around with a thinner soaked cotton ball. Shown below in my half-assed attempt without dry brushing all the grime and accents yet.

Wow thats a killer build & cool info on the coloring too! Can't wait to see it finished. I'll have to experiment with the thinner swirling cotton ball method...

SO much left to do! The led bar didnt turn out on camera very well :(

Here's my update on just doing a better paint mod on the cup...

I've got a pretty good "torched" look going here by just adding water to oil-based metallics so it purposely beads up and lets me "wash" it around. Then blotting with a paper towel. The harder I push the more paint i take up from the chemical reaction to the plastic. I think it's going good.

Next, some really light purple/red washes just in a few spots...then some antiquing with blacks!

I like all these repaints. I suck so bad at paint. I don't know which I hate more, sanding, painting, molding,filling.... and yet I continue to try to build models!

Damn thats pretty good. Although it reminds me alot of the Fallout pipboy. Well great minds spark great ideas. You will be the most talked about person at the theatres if you go to see it OP.

That looks great!

Stupid question a freind came up with: Are there instructions that come with the 7-11 cup? It could be that we've all been over thinkign removing the gauntlet from the cup, since odds are, you'd want to remove it from the cup for washing.

Maybe it has a twist lock kind of thing, and can be removed for washing easier than we've been thinking about?
