Well okay then... It seems everybody is inboard with the current one category setup so... Nevermind.
I can't wait to see all the entries! Mine is almost done... Just have a few last things to work out. I'm glad we've got so long to submitt though. Really gives the opportunity to tweak and fine tune.
Good luck to all... This is so great!

Hey, I love this. I don't know if I'll have time to put together an entry for this one, but I'm really glad someone is doing this. I was just thinking it was about time for another contest. :)

you should definitely enter!!!! You've got more than a month to come up with something! Go for it man... the more the better!

Just thought I'd maybe try to kick off a little good spirited conversation with you guys about the contest here.

First let me say this.

PLEASE DO NOT REVEAL ANY SPECIFIC DETAILS ABOUT THE BUILD, COMPONENTS, OR CONSTRUCTION PROCESS OF YOUR SONIC! I DON'T WANT ANYONE'S IDEAS BEING STOLEN!

Anyhow... I was just at work this morning... and I started thinking about this "thing" I saw yesterday while I was scrounging for a last few Sonic parts. It's not at all in line with what I've been working on. In fact, it's a completely other "thing" to build another sonic with. Now I have to decide which one to enter into the contest. UGH!

I was wondering, with such a long deadline... have any of the rest of you changed tracks completely during this build? Have you built multiple Sonics and now have to choose?

I'm just itching to talk about this with SOMEBODY! I'm having the best time with this contest!

Again... DON'T GIVE ANYTHING AWAY! PLEASE!

And to the Next Doctor... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this contest... the opportunity to showcase our work amongst eachother... and the possibility of winning a really cool prize! This absolutely rocks and I can't remember the last time I was this excited about a contest. simply awesome!

I've changed my mind twice at least, and now back to the original idea. Such is the way of things. Biggest problem I face right now is I know that component 'X' would be perfect to polish this off, and I know I have component 'X' lay around at home. Do you think I can find component 'X'?

I've found the biggest problem with working on this is not wanting to make it look too busy. Try and keep it clean and functional.

I haven't had time to start building yet, but my design is coming along. The problem I'm having is that I've thought up almost the whole thing, but now I'm having trouble thinking of a good back end.

that's funny Risu... I already have my backe end... but getting it to attach to the body has been my big problem!

I had a good time with the saber contest and I thought this would be fun to. I have not watched Dr. Who since the Tom Baker days(Altho the new stuff is the Que) so coming up with an non cannon screwdriver should be easy. But not really, because I have seen pics of them here. I have tried to get away from the color and look as much as possible and still have it be "right" looking. I had gone thru my junk yard with out any inspiration, so I wandered the hardware store, also without inspiration. I did have a drawing but nothing really worked with it. I picked up some bits and then they spent two weeks sitting on the shop table. I finally started today, hoping that once I got going I would get into a groove. I started with just delabeling the parts and that really got me in to the mood. I spent three hours, grinding, filing, and sanding. I managed to get 60-70% percent done. And I am pretty sure about how all but 5% of the rest is going to go together.
Keeping it not busy really is tough. It is so small you just want to doo-dad it up for more visual impact.

Don't feel like the lone ranger. My main entry was to be and might still be a future sonic idea that was leaning heavily on the sort of idea of the stills from the new series, but now that I've seen really detailed images of that my 80% finished entry looks really plain in comparison. But on the other hand it's going to have a multifunction feature hiding a refillable ink pen that will satisfy me on a day to day basis.

This isn't just design. It's fabrication. If it was a sketch of a new sonic, that's easy. Me and Illustrator and Photoshop, sky's the limit. Actually prowling the hardware store, the hobby shop and other places looking for that one piece that you have in your brain you'll spend fruitless hours and fend off countless sales people asking "Can I help you find something?"

"Yes I'm looking for a flanging sort of thing to be the emitter on a Sonic Screwdriver", will only lead to those worried looks that maybe they need to call security.

I've already taken a trip to Radio Shack who have those little mini-momentary switches back in the bins like say the 9/10 screen sonic has to actuate the lights as well as bags of LEDs. Easy-peasy. Now try to find a way to make it have sound, not necessary for the contest, but heck I want it to have sound for me. Not so easy apparently. And all the parts; tubes, rods, flanges, various brickabrack, aggh! I have enough stuff for eleventeen Sonics now spread across a 4'x8' banquet table that is my work bench, enough dust, plastic shaving, bits of wire to choke my shop vac and I still don't have one that I want to say. "Hey y'all, look at this!"

I'm starting to wonder if I have what it takes. Or if I'll have enough time. Well, at least it keeps me off the streets...

amen to the "busy" comment... so many ideas and only one sonic. what's a doctor to do?

And an amen to your amen. I have two complete designs and it is so making my brain hurt trying to decide which one to enter.

I keep hoping for a rules change and the allowance of multiple entries. :unsure

Well... Amen again... but I do see the point in only having one entry. It will keep things fair between the people that are scrounging the dollar store just to make one and the people that could machine 5 of these out without breaking a sweat.
The Next Doctor has done VERY well to keep this competition fair and balanced and I appreciate that.

As for the multiple Sonic issue... I'm there again. First I saw a "thing" that would be great. Then I got a ton of ideas for it but decided against it. Then the next day I went and bought the "thing". Then I decided it would be to expensive. Then tonight, while I was shopping for something for my original design... I found so many cool things that would work on design #2. What's a Doctor to do?!?!?!

I'm just fine with the one entry only... I just gotta pick and choose between the two. It gives me a good excuse to show off my designs to everyone I know for input!

This is so cool and I'm glad we got the chance to do this!

Oh, there's a limit of one entry per person. I guess I'd better pull up the rules again and read more carefully. I actually have 2 solid ideas- and a possible third if I have time. I guess I'll have to see which one is best, maybe post the other two here then just for fun one the deadline is up to show 'em off.

I did actually have a great idea born out of desperation last night so I'm back on track, though I don't expect to win just have fun.

Has everyone seen these pics of the new 11th doctor sonic btw. I posted them in another thread.

It looks awesome.

Winning is fun right???:lol

But to be serious man... don't be so down on your work. You never know how the chips will fall and were things will go. You may just be the one that's got that "something" that the people on the board will go nuts for.

I'm really digging this competition... I can't thank the Next Doctor enough. This has been so much fun and I think we're all going to be building at least one or more of these AFTER the contest is over. After seeing all the ideas flowing and the new options for custom builds... this could be very cool!
