*Contest* - Custom Sonic Screwdriver

It's cool, I used to carry the little pen torch and now I carry my MFX. But that's why we're here.

Oh yeah I forgot about those. I have two of the half-sized single LED torch models as well.

Those are actually quite useful in dark spaces as long as you don't want to read anything written in red. :)

Yeah it's just the standard toy one though. I have two of those, the huge sonic pen, and the River Song sonic which annoyingly has lost one of the four emitters.

Because...um...I tend to carry them both in my coat pocket when out and about.

Me<---geek. ;-)

Oh cool! The universe is being kind for once. I found the missing "emitter" in the driveway when going out to do grocery shopping today.

I think after the custom contest entry (which I picked up parts for already and ordered my solution to the sound issue) I'm going to try and make a custom River Song model.

I've got a simple design on mine. Still got a ways to go before completely being assembled, detailed and painted.

It's starting to look like I'm going to have to build mine in 2 or 3 days right before the deadline. Exciting!

I've got mine essentially done, just working on the electronics.

Small soldering - what fun!! :confused

But, I leave for vacation in a week, and won't be back until the 12th, so I guess I better finish it this weekend.

I'm waiting on electronics but I sent my initial prototype pic to get started. (It looks horrible but I'm pretty sure I can do much better before the deadline.)

Now if the one XXXXs and XXXXs would just arrive I'd be able to begin a final build. *grumble*

Noob question - is it legal to tear apart one toy to make another? I have the horribly large "sonic pen" that I don't like and was wondering what the thoughts were about using the sound circuit out of that. Sacrilege? Ok? People chasing me with pitchforks?

Hmmmm, that's a tough one!

Would it fall under rule #5
5. Entries must be an original design. No "replicas" of existing Sonic Screwdrivers

Or rule #8
8. Machined or cast parts are ok but the majority of the construction must be found items.

Don't know if the pieces of a torn apart existing Sonic would count as
"replica" or "found items" or both or neither?? :confused

Just the mention of "tear apart" might insight the Townspeople with the pitchforks though?!?

The primary focus is the appearance of the sonic, so you would not want to use much or any of an existing props exterior components.
I would think there ae no problems using internal parts. A sound board or light would be fine.

I say GO FOR IT. The whole thing is judged by the visual appearance right? So why not?

The only thing keeping me from doing it for mine is inertia to actually order a C.O. toy because I want mine to make sound. I wanted to buy a chip from the guys selling those Pertwee/Baker/Davison sonic replicas and frankly I've never seen a case of 'go away don't bother us' when I asked over and over could I just buy a chip. In fact I think I should start a thread asking for help from the wider community here how do I make or source my own chip.

As for 'original design' I haven't ever seen too many 'custom' sonics that went all that far from either the classic or CE/DT design so how far out can you go in originality before it just looks like some random prop from say Star Trek? Hell the new Matt Smith sonic looks like a sex toy to a dirty mind, not a sonic! Should it have a light? Well, now the precedent is yes with the new series variations, but then one might ask why does a sonic device emit LIGHT? We are inured to believe watching movie props that if lights blink and flash the thing is doing something that's why.

So what are the rules and what are made to be broken to innovate and move forward?

At this point I'm pleasing me. If anyone likes it or it wins an prize then it's lagniappe...

The electronics from the CO toy are fair game, I asked a while back. I was actually told I could use part of the body as well if it was completely repainted and the shape was changed, but I'm trying to find a way around that right now.

Withdrawing. Got a new job out of town and have no time. First chance to be in front of a computer in 2 weeks. Good luck to all.
