***COMPLETED**** Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

pcoz, both the base and the ship look great...so much detailing on both. how stable is your display...looking at it makes me worry its going to tip over, but i think its just the angle in some of the pics.

agreed. though gus has a great cockpit, which i snagged, I'd be interested in some resin casts / prints of the engines and the cannons for sure.

Thank you sir! I appreciate the kind words..... Yes, the base and display is solid as a rock. No worries there. My only concern may be the upper wings. There's just enough sag in them when I loosely assembled, that it might warrant some modification once I wire them and permanently fix the wings. Regardless, it's been a fantastic learning/ craft honing experience. It'll truly be one of a kind. I'm pretty excited to see it painted and lit up.

Thanks for the comments......

On vacation, on a cruise ship right now getting ready to depart from Miami... I'll be back next week !

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Hey Guys....I've been working on the paint job and I should have some updates soon.

In the meantime, Quick Question: Does anyone know where I might find the graphics for all the fine details found on the X-Wing ? I know they were kit bashed from various tank decals back in the day. If I could even find a reference sheet, I could recreate the images, scale them in illustrator, and make my own decals.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Ok, back in action....

Been painting the X-Wing for a while now, building up the layers.

Wanted to test the the photos linked to photobucket.

More to come....

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

I don't know about that, but thank you for your kind words ! I'm literally learning this hobby as I go with a ton of inspiration from you guys. Hopefully this paint job comes off like I envisioned. We'll soon see.....

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Hey Guys.

Took my 12 year old to see Rogue One last night and I thought it was pretty good. A solid story with a good mix of good ol' Star Wars nostalgia. Every time I saw an X-Wing, I felt like knew every square inch of it ! Then I was reminded of all the other vehicles and ships that my fellow RPF'rs have built over the years when they appeared on screen...pretty cool.

A quick update on some odds and ends before the start of X-wing exterior paint job.

So now I'm painting 9 separate parts. 4 wings, 4 cannons and 1 fuselage. It makes it a whole lot easier to handle each part separately when doing detailed finish work.

Started working on the engines. I wanted to give this a dirty make over but not too filthy that it looked like a rusted heap of...well, you know.

Used some silver to highlight the raised areas.

20161113_082303_zpsinptiea2.jpg

Then I came in with some washes, blended them in to add some color and depth. Also trying to be mindful of leaving the black base showing through.

20161113_083115_zpslygjadkc.jpg

Since the black is a flat black primer, I used enamels and enamel washes.

Figured I'd get a start on painting R2 while the other pieces were drying.

Came back to the death star surface pieces and gave them some light grey highlights. Later, I'll slightly weather and add some painted details.

Back soon with the X-Wing Paint Job !

Thanks for looking and I'm always open to suggestions !

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Let's move on to the paint and get some RED on this puppy !

So my thought process here was to build up layers of paint.

1. Bonding Primer (for plastic)
2. Black Primer (for light blocking)
3. Enamel Testors Light Aircraft Grey for base and smoothing (cured for 3 weeks)
4. Matte Clear Coat to prepare for acrylic and washes
5. Masking Fluid (pictured below) to add subtle texture
6. Mixed an airbrush color using, White, Black, Brown, Yellow to over coat.
7. Mask panels and paint various colors
8. Washes & weathering
9. SLIGHT airbrushing....NO BLACK ! Sorry, too many times I've seen these X-Wings look like they just lost a battle with a black rattle can....
10. Try not to screw this up !

Ok, let's go:

20161205_200316_zpshlypuvar.jpg

Adding masking fluid all over every part. I know a lot will get covered up with weathering and paint layers, but I want the depth.

20161205_194447_zps17hismr4.jpg

Spraying the over coat.

20161205_204217_zpslzhdioud.jpg

And one of the most enjoyable things do do in my life is removing masking ! It did make a mess though...

20161206_120815_zpsuxnvvbdz.jpg

Looks like a weird camo...but trust me :D

20161206_134122_zpsf35feyes.jpg

Next is a transparent grey overcoat to add some shading.

20161206_173917_zpsewfqkpeh.jpg

Tried to hit the corners, edges, and the nooks and crannies.

20161206_174000_zpsvvbjawm1.jpg

Starting to build up the fuselage...

20161206_175203_zpsbuxvkysq.jpg

and then time to mask the markings....

20161206_181620_zpspl66gxjx.jpg

20161206_183133_zps54bj5wew.jpg

20161206_185609_zpsnsobkykt.jpg

even more masking.....

20161208_174330_zpsiwbrnrkh.jpg

tape combine with fluid.

20161208_210032_zpsvinswbeb.jpg

tried to use the fluid for some of battle damaged areas.

20161208_211109_zpsnnzkvtcc.jpg

Ready for RED !!! I never thought I would get to this point.....so excited, lol

20161208_212347_zpswdv7hrrx.jpg

20161209_163917_zpswmw57urt.jpg

Masked for the yellow too....

20161210_142616_zpsknsr0zps.jpg

rubbed off the masking fluid for the yellow.

20161210_145137_zpswasyczlu.jpg

One of my first mistakes was not masking off a larger area to account for over spray, as you can see below. :facepalm Fortunately, I was able to use a little airbrush cleaner and remove it...phew !

20161210_145715_zpsokbyn5to.jpg

Again, I cannot stress how enjoyable this part is....If there was a position for a professional masking remover, I'd be first to apply !

20161210_150034_zpsiyndmij2.jpg

and there you have it for now...

20161210_150133_zpsmb1qbl4m.jpg

I'll be back soon when I get some time to post the rest of the pic's.

Thanks for looking !

Thanks guys, I appreciate you hanging with me through this project. It's taken FOREVER! Almost finished...

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Back with another batch of pic's...maybe too many.

Back at the masking removal :thumbsup

Trying to determine the color scheme of the panels even though my X-Wing is a mix between multiple sources.

20161210_151621_zpsgm6p4h7a.jpg

I mixed a blueish grey for the canopy and the cannons....

20161210_163340_zpsezzegfuw.jpg

Now that I've got the main colors done, it's time to address the subtle color differences in the rest of the X-Wing.

20161211_113656_zpswydyowy7.jpg

After looking at the original color of the canopy, I decided to repaint it and tone it down a little more into a lighter grey. As I was taping it off, I realized I missed the entire border around the opening.

20161211_213502_zps4cwi1h3k.jpg

and of course some liquid masking for damage.

20161212_173758_zpslnb6vywv.jpg

20161212_202332_zps10ru4j8d.jpg

Now to turn my attention to weathering. Not a pro at this for sure, but I've researched a ton of techniques with acrylics, oils, chalk, and the use of all of them. I decided to give my acrylic wash a shot and see how it went.

20161213_144053_zpsqutj7qll.jpg

So I want this X-wing to be worn, dirty, filthy, but not black as I said before. Applied some of the wash....

20161213_144121_zpsghvnw3he.jpg

...let it dry a little and then blotted off with a paper towel. I also used a brush to push it around a little too.

20161213_144235_zpsfcxv940k.jpg

Working on the bottom, so if I screwed it up, I could learn what to do before I address the top.

20161213_150308_zpsnb2obdpn.jpg

Pulled back a little of the wash with my fingers to create some streaking.

Weathering is always fun, and makes a real difference, not an X-wing but this was my sons battle droid costume from 2 years ago,
before weathering

The weathering is turning out really good!

Looking forward to the rest

Thank you sir ! I'm trying so hard not to over-do it!

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Hey guys.....Here's an update on some more painting and weathering.

Continued to isolate various panels for paint. Again, making sure I had plenty of protection for over spray.

From here, I decided to start weathering the fuselage.

20161214_172438_zpsnaph8abk.jpg

I was happy with the way the bottom turned out so I will continue the same process throughout. Instead of coating an entire section and wiping off the excess, I'm painting each area with the wash.

20161214_173114_zpsw33nthdb.jpg

Filling in panel lines, removing extra wash and then painting the details.

If anyone sees any spots that I can improve, please feel free to comment !

Thanks for following along !

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Man this looks terrific! I've been following for a while now, and it's very satisfying for me to see you do this bird justice with an excellent paint job! Very well done!

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Thanks Steven !

I appreciate that.... I'm coming around the home stretch now. I'm so nervous my final paint job won't turn out like I envisioned, but so far, so good. I'm happy at the moment. The HUGE trick is to completely weather it but still have it look natural.

Thanks for following along....

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

*Small update then back with the wings / cannons later.

Started to turn my attention to the droid strip. Used the Black Acrylic Wash again (even though it's actually brownish) to get the small details a little more defined.

The butt plate needs a little repair and paint detail. More on that later.

And a profile comparison to the Red 5. Although I am matching this closest to this model, my overall take on this X-wing comes from multiple sources. ILM Models, 4' X-Wing, Movie Stills, etc. Kind of a hybrid of sorts.
