Limited Run CLOSED: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Are these hilts already being mailed out?
I ask because it appears the So-Cal Saber Service already has theirs:

Very interesting....

to clear it up, the 2 hilts that So-Cal sabers has are the other 2 prototypes that were made.

Scott and I paid for the shop to make 3 prototypes before the main run to ensure the quality of the piece was right and everything fit together before we went ahead with making 70+ more.

You saw one of the prototypes in the first photos that were posted of the aluminium one. This one was the one that @generalFROSTY; got to paint up. The prototypes were then sent in different directions. My prototype I decided to send to Frosty, and Scotts 2 prototypes went to So-Cal Sabers.

So this is the mystery of the sabers.

I'm looking for a new update on the run status this week from Scott when he drops into the machinist.

I know I and everyone has been hoping for faster turn around from the machinist on these and unfortunately we did not get it. It can be frustrating, especially when I keep saying we'll have them in 2 weeks.... Each time I say that I meant it, because those are the time lines I was given. But this time!!!! It should be 2 weeks.... seriously. We are very close to done with this.

Might have to raise the price a tad to accommodate the additional labor to match the prop shop model...
Please everyone voice your thoughts.

I for one would be completely fine with that GeneralFROSTY I understand that matching the propshop will be more labor intensive, but I think it will be worth it!

SUPER AWESOME UPDATE THAT ONLY AWESOME PEOPLE NEED TO READ!

Ok everyone - I did a lot of thinking and had a few energy drinks on top of some coffee and a delicious chicken wrap. It appears that everyone pretty much wants the finish seen on the PropShop model. I can do this, but as I mentioned earlier, this will require more time and I have adjusted the price accordingly.
Now, That being said, I still feel I am offering a very good price for this work - since not everyone who is reportedly hiring me for this has submitted an order form through my website, I am unable to send out a batch email with this updated information, so I am really hoping you guys are paying attention to this thread...

The original price of $200.00 reflected the work I did to replicate the photos taken from Celebration. To give you guys something that is a good match to what we are seeing from the PropShop model, the price adjustment - effective across the board to everyone on my list - will be $225.00 + shipping. As before, if you are sending me a 3rd party belt clip, there is an additional charge of $30 for paint and mounting of this part.

So just so I am clear, the finish I will be doing for the run of hilts sent to me will be based on the PropShop photos. I understand everyone likes the copper layer detail - this would be best achieved by electroplating the hilt before paint BUT I don't have that capability at the shop YET, if I did I could assure you the price would double at least. SO...I am going to roll up my sleeves and do that detail by hand. It will look really awesome - at least I see it looking awesome in my head.

As I have stated from the get-go, this type of paint scheme is a very organic process, so no two hilts will be exactly alike, but I assure you they will be very very VERY similar, which is one of the advantages of doing the entire run in one shot. Check out this run of Kylo Ren helmets I just finished (in case you haven't seen these on Facebook yet)

Those pics should give you a good indication of things. I am going to approach this with a lot of love and extreme attention to detail. I have enough reference images to succeed, so I need everyone to be on board with me on this.
As always, I appreciate your support and your trust in hiring me for this project. [SUB][/SUB]

Personally I am not a fan of the Prop Shop finish on the Kylo saber. Going off the pics on their website, there's just too much of the discoloration on the quillons. I get that its supposed to be metal distress cause by the heat, but I feel like they're using too many colors and its not blended enough. I like the look of the prototype General Frosty painted much better. I think there's too much of a rainbow look to the Prop Shop one. I don't know how accurate that is, but it just doesn't look right to me.

Well we are going to have to figure this out. We do know that metal can look like that from heat stress so that's not the issue.
I think what I'll have to do is buy some pieces of pipe and paint them up to show you how I'd do it. I can adjust the opacity of the material and feather it all together. I can do lots of variations but I really want to stick to one scheme.
I could be open to two versions but I'm reluctant because you'll have people changing their minds last second which could cause problems.
I'll let this cook in my head for a few days. You guys sound off and I'll troll and read your comments. In the end, I want to make sure you guys are happy

Looking at the prop shop photos it looks like they are going for a heat discolored titanium look. Of most of the metals, titanium is one that has some of the broadest range and most vivid changes in color. Here is a pic of a titanium exhaust that has some nice color range.

GeneralFROSTY This is awesome. I am looking to submit my forum. I was going to message directly but just in case anyone else is in the same situation I will post up on here.

I have Luke's saber clip already from his last run. Should I submit my forum without the tracking number for the clip? Or should wait till I send the clip out hopefully tomorrow and then submit my order forum?

Hi Jimmy, I just filled out the submission form. Please add me to the list of people sending a Kylo saber to you for the hero finish. Thanks!

Well, it's a good thing you didn't sign up for @GeneralFROSTY; to finish your hilt.
@GeneralFROSTY; I think the consensus is prop shop finish. If isn't much skin if one person drops off due to the finish change, though I don't think anyone will.

I agree that having 2 finishes isn't a good idea in terms of choices and work load. Offer one, and go from there, people will love it once they hold it in their hands.

I have sent out an update to all folks your price and finish update as well as the list, for people to square off their order for finishing with you.

I'm fine with the slight increase in cost to do the Prop Shop color scheme on the saber. I really like the look of the paint job they did on it! I have to think that they did the paint scheme they chose on their version of Kylo's saber for a reason. Like Anovos, I believe they had direct access to the film used props, & in Prop Shops case, they actually made some of the props for the film. I'm not sure if they had their hands in making the lightsabers or not? I could be completely off base, but one would think that with as much as they are charging for their offerings, they would be trying to offer their customers the most film accurate props possible. Again, this is all just speculation on my part, & I have no hard facts to back any of what I'm saying. At any rate, I'll gladly pay an extra $25 to get the Prop Shop look painted on my saber! To be honest, I'd be happy with which ever version you decide to do. Having seen General Frost's previous work, I'm completely confident that however he decides to paint these sabers, they'll look AWESOME!:cool

I'm going to echo a lot of what vaderjeff just said. First, I am perfectly okay with the price increase. Regarding the look of the saber, if I had to choose one over the other, I would go for the Propshop look. But I would also be open to a finish that blended the looks of Propshop and Frosty's original. I don't have any knowledge of what is truly an authentic look, and ultimately I believe I would defer to Frosty's judgment on this. Perhaps Frosty's mock-ups will provide a clear cut winner.

If anyone has any trouble submitting the order form through my website, it may get rejected if you are attaching images, it's a technical issue I haven't been able to get sorted out yet so just don't add photos. Believe me, I already have a thorough library of reference photos.
