CLOSED - Grave Tusken

Good evening.

Does anyone know of any reference photos of the Grave Tusken from the game Jedi Knight, apart from photos of the CG characters, I have enough of those I think, but there were supposed to be some paintings of them in the Dark Forces books and a painting of one even unmasked, so what a Tusken Raider looks like underneath the wrappings is not really a secret if you know where to look. I already know what an unmasked Tusken looks like, and it's not like the spiky A-hole face from that comic book.

Thanks for any help.

Dark Side Sith Lord.

Re: Grave Tusken

Dont have any pics but I remember a thread where someone was doing a grave tusken costume...tried the search function, but didn´t find it. Maybe it fell off the board!?

Re: Grave Tusken

I'm building a Grave Tusken costume, so it must have been a thread by me, but this is my first thread here about the Grave Tusken, so if someone had posted a thread about it here before, then perhaps I'm not the only one making a costume like this, though I do hope I am. Having to build and own the very first costume of something is a nice thought to me.

Re: Grave Tusken

I own all three Dark Forces books as well as the Giant Jedi Knight Strategy guide, I searched diligently but could not find a single image of a Grave Tusken for you :confused Sorry to say there isn't an image in the DH Dark Forces books.

Hmm, that's odd. I heard that there was an image of an unmasked Grave Tusken standing behind Kyle in a city or something. Perhaps it wasn't wearing normal Grave Tusken clothing. If there's an alien that looks almost like a cross between a dog and a baboon in the book, then it might be one.

motman241 - I'm the one that put the photos of the Grave Tusken into that article, and even wrote most of the apparell stuff there, but thanks anyway :)

Re: Grave Tusken

Haha, they sure are :lol That's why I need some more photos of one, because the graphics and textures sort of suck compaired to todays games.

Still a pretty cool game though :p

If noone else can find any more photos, I think I have a pretty good idea of what they should look like anyway, but photos would help me a lot since they do really look like one giant pixel.

Re: Grave Tusken

Various photos of reference and progress.

Oh, and the reason why I'm making this one - I built a Tusken Raider once, I like being a Tusken Raider, I had the game Jedi Knight, I remembered there were Tuskens of sorts there, but when I looked at them they were totally different and I wondered what the fudge they were, and they were Grave Tuskens, same as Tusken Raiders only with different clothes, but that's another story..

Not that hard to make I believe, only I need the dam^/ time to do it.
This might sound strange..But does anyone else think that the costume actually existed?
That they scanned photos of it and used them for that model? It just seems to strange that they made it with regular pants and all sorts of other regular looking things.

Those who have played Jedi Knight know that there were real actors in the movies between levels, so some costumes really did exist and were possibly scanned. The snowtroopers of Jedi Academy were scanned of a touring suit I believe, so you never know.

Re: Grave Tusken

I can't remember if it was on the RPF, the 501st board, or the Krayt Clan board, but it was decided that that is not a picture of an "unmasked Tusken Raider".

The picture is taken from page 45 of "The Illustrated Star Wars Universe" book. The art is by Ralph McQuarrie. In the book, a shapeshifter infiltrates several cultures, including the Tuskens, to learn about them. It was never decided whether the picture:
  • is just a "random" one that was added to the book, and isn't meant to go along with the text of the book.
  • was drawn specifically for the book, and illustrates the text in the book (if this is the case, the creature COULD be the shapeshifter and not a Tusken).
Further discussion brought up the point that Tuskens are NOT allowed to show their faces, even to each other, except married couples in private. It was also discussed that the "creature" could be an alien species from a nearby region, possibly who befriended the Tuskens for the purpose of trading with them, etc. Even the Wiki article on "Grave Tuskens" states that "Their masks only covered half their faces which defied the traditional law of the Sand People not to show skin, resulting in being banned or beaten to death if doing so."

It seems unlikely that a Tusken would be standing in the middle of camp, exposing skin AND their whole face while an entire group of Tuskens stand around chatting. More probable is that the creature is not a Tusken, and therefore not subject to their rules or disciplinary action.

Just didn't want you basing some of your design on that creature, which has never been proven to be a Tusken. :)

Good luck, and check out the Krayt Clan board sometime. Maybe someone over there knows something.

Re: Grave Tusken

Strange that he would paint something for a story of a book? I believe that originally the Tusken Raiders didn't have it in their storyline that they weren't allowed to show skin, in the painting there are Tuskens wearing short robes and whatnot and appears to have bare legs, also you can see the skin of the Tuskens in EpIV.

I always thought that it was an unmasked Tusken because of the recemblance between it and the face of the Grave Tuskens, and yeah the Grave Tuskens really don't give a darn about that skin rule, you can see their faces.

Perhaps if it is the shape shifter, it would have changed it's form to a Tusken Raider? It is a shape shifter after all.

Just for thoughts - All the Tusken in the photos are different from one and other and has designs like none in the movies. Tusken Raiders were really meant to be different and had different Gaffi sticks even, but now that it's been a while, info has been mixed up and all Tusken are nearly clones with only one Gaffi stick type when a Gaffi originally was "anything" you could kill something with.

So we'll probably never know if that's an unmaked Tusken or not.

Re: Grave Tusken

It had followed one into a tent?

If it isn't a Tusken, then at least I know what a Grave Tusken's face looks like, and that pretty much sais what an unmasked Tusken looks like because you can really see it.

For this costume I'll be making a fiberglass face plate that goes over my own face and looks like a Tusken. Might be a bad idea to do this out of fiberglass, but I don't have the option for making a latex mask right now.
