Kinda exited about this one. I drew up the file and these parts were grown on an SLA machine. I will have the rest of the parts later but am showing what I have so far.

It looks a little bit like the Hubley Atom gun. I've alaways wanted one, but they cost
a fortune (that and the handles seem to break over the years).

Curious to see how this turns out!

I plan to cast the zig zaggy barrel part in clear so it can be lit from the inside. Hollow for electronics and will have dials that turn. I also think I'd like to go for a flexible/squishy grip cast in fire engine red.

Sounds good! You should be able to mount some smd leds in there, with plenty of room. Then run them off a 3 volt button cell battery. If you need any help, just let me know!

I love the look of the old toy rayguns, and steampunk ones as well. But, it is an art form getting them to look just right.

Nice, but with that thumb-rest, those grips are definitely not friendly to lefties.

There is more surface detail that I will add to it.
As far as lefties...I made the grip more as it was done originally.

are those already sanded and primed or is that straight from the machine? If so is it an objet?

Also, I have not decided what direction to take on the power setting dial. I have also tried to make it look a little more realized and not as toyish with it's turning rear dials and removable parts.

The SLA parts set in place, not glued so that's why it's wonky. Some parts are still being drawn but this gives a better idea what it looks like together.

Parts are just set in place. Top of the hear sink is laying flat so you can see the detail.

Just need to grow the needle power setting dial.

Amazing! Did you do any clean-up on the pieces? I can't see any print lines anywhere. Do you mind saying where you got this printed?

Yes there is clean up but it wasn't difficult at all. The material it was grown in is VERY nice for clean up. I think back to when I used to order parts from Shapeways in white strong flexible and the parts always looked fuzzy(for a lack of a better word) and really can't be sanded without a few coats of primer over them first. The material you see here is nothing like that white robust. Sands or files clean.

I can't see any print lines anywhere.

There are some grow lines on these particular pieces but all depends what machine and material you order the parts grown on.

Do you mind saying where you got this printed?

I went to Wonderfest 2012 and saw some SLA master patterns that were the best I have ever seen. I should have asked where they had their master patterns done as they were better than the ones I had for this gun.

As a price reference these particular parts from cost in the range of $440 to $780 depending on what machine/material they are grown on. These same parts made using Shapeways white strong flexible would be about $225. If you don't mind spending a little more time on primering and sanding I think you can get just as good an end result quality from Shapeways parts(using them as a master) as you would if you went to the place that made the SLA master parts for this.
