CEREAL KILLL3R'S - Halo 3 Master Chief (WIP with Videos)

re: CEREAL KILLL3R'S - Halo 3 MK VI Comprehensive wip

UPDATE!

Ok, here we go!

Video update #5 is up. I will upload some pictures tomorrow of the current progress.

**************************************************
Making Master Chief: Episode 05 - Working On Small Areas & Building Detail.

**************************************************

The chest plate is basically finished. As stated above, pictures will be up tomorrow. All that is left to be done on the chest plate is:
  • Sand & Prime
  • Final Fine Detail Work
  • Battle Damage
  • Neck Seal

The last two items in the list above will be covered in the next video.

As usual, comments/questions always welcome!
Until then,

Dave/Cereal

UPDATE!!

Ok, I've been delayed in posting any update info, but now I'm free so here we go!

Here are some pictures of the progress...

Now that I know that all the symmetry and rough detail are good to go, did a sanding with 220 grit and applied some primer.

At this point, the front chest plate is basically done. All that is left is a final sanding to get rid of any imperfections and then muck up a perfect surface with battle damage! :thumbsup

The only thing left to do, other than that... Is the neck seal (sigh)... what to do, what to do... Haven't decided what approach I will take as of yet, but it isn't something that I "must" decide now.

Next I will be purchasing some hardware to re-join the two halves of the front and back plates. Apply them and finalize the joining areas and of course the battle damage on the right chest. Which there will be a video to cover it!

Well, that's about it for now... Let me know what you think about how the chest came out. As usual, any questions/comments/critiques are always welcome!

Till next time, :lol

Great work there mate this is one of the most impressive threads Ive read in a while. Any chance you could go into some more detail in what tools you use to rough out an fine tune.
Liking the videos too!

:) just watched your last vid where you do go into detail with tool use.
I wouldn't hesitate to say that this thread and your tutorial videos should be considered the foundation of pep building. Can't wait to see how you progress through the molding and casting phases.

cheers

Videos are completely amazing, I watched all 5 in one night and plan on watching them all again at least one or two times to make sure there's nothing I missed. Can't wait to see more from you man!

SUB-EFFING-SCRIBED! I'll be doing a lot of the finish work on my own armor soon, so I'm going to be coming back and checking this thread OFTEN.

Wow...great bondo work and gave me a time-saving idea to cut it while it sets. Thanks!

Thanks for the complements!
I will be making a post that goes into what tools I do use. It should have been in the thread much earlier on, but somehow, that section did not copy over when I did the initial post! :facepalm

However, I will rectify this!
The molding and casting of the helmet will be starting soon, within the next couple of weeks :)

Very happy that you have found the videos helpful!
Let's me know that I haven't wasted my time and energy! :rolleyes
More to come!

It's great that I could offer some assistance!
Hope your build goes nice and smoothly!

Thanks Stealth.
The Master Chief is special to me and is an important build. Just wanted to see it finally done "my way!".

Like I said before, it's nice to see another Italian mono-tone prop/costume builder from Ontario!

Cheers,

Tools of the trade...

I've been asked by a few different people "What tools do I use when I work", well here's my attempt of answering that question for those who are interested:

059.jpg

Some of the things above are self explanatory...

What I have done is numbered the items that "I" feel are important, they are by no means a standard of any kind. It's just what works for me.

1. A foam backer for a light switch (weather proofing) I use this behind sand paper for cushioning as to avoid leaving finger marks when I sand.

2. CA Glue (Super Glue) comes in handy when you have pep paper coming through where you are sanding. If you put super glue on the paper it will go solid and sand very easily.

3. OOPS!!! The 3 was supposed to be on the "Razor Blades". These are the tools I use most often. They cut, gouge, and scrape like a cabinet scraper. Excellent for working with bondo while in the "curing" stage.

4. 90 Degree head for rotary tool.

5. Random orbit sander (just a personal preference) of course any type of sander will do just fine. I plan on purchasing one of the triangular sanders when one goes on sale.

6. File set, Do not under estimate the value of a good set of files large and small.
They are very versatile allowing you to get into all the little nooks and crannies. They also go further and faster than sand paper alone. DONT FORGET ABOUT THE WIRE BRUSH... MAKES CLEANING THE FILES A BREEZE!

7. Flex shaft; for rotary tool... Have you ever tried holding a Dremel like a pencil??? (need I say more)

8. Nope, no 8 on the picture... this is how low budget this production is!!!

9. Dentistry tools. These are just bonus items to have available. They are great at gouging, creasing and carving. Out of all of them that I have, I use one regularly. (see below)

The items that did not get a number really need no explanation. A pencil writes stuff and the sand paper sands. However the grits that I use are 80, 120 and 220. That's it, nothing special there.

Here is the one implement that I use most of these dentistry tools. It's called a "bone scraper"... can you guess what its original use was?? This item is great because it is almost razor sharp Titanium coated with Zirconium making it hard as hell. The angle of the perfectly flat teeth are such that when you press the tip of either end against an edge of a workpiece and pull backwards, it will pull 1/4 of a mm of material off, leaving nothing behind. The rest I use mainly for detail lines and to scrape out battle damage.

Ok, may sound stupid and look dumb but a simple pack of playing cards from the local dollar store can help out in your day to day work.

Ok, So there it is, hope it helps and or gives you any answers to what you were looking for. Actual progress update to come in a couple hours or so.

Cheers everyone,
Dave/Cereal.

Looks like I'm off to Harbor Freight for some more tools!

Sensational mate. Its threads like these that you can sit down and easily read through for hours. The helmet came out fantastic, and Im sure with the work your putting into the chest piece it will be just as good.

Glad you're enjoying the thread. It was a main focus of mine to make sure that it was thorough and enjoyable!

I've been sick for the past week so there has not been much going on, but am back into the swing of things! Very excited to get a move on with the chest, more to come!

Awesome build man, GREAT JOB!

Thanks you Crank!

The visor is made of visor! :lol
(carefully and time consumingly cut, that is)

More to come soon all!

Hahaha, duh! I should have asked, "Where did you get the visor from to cut?" :p

re: CEREAL KILLL3R'S - Halo 3 MK VI Comprehensive wip

Ok, now I have to ask, where did you get that bone scraper? I've searched online for hours and can't find anything that looks anything like it.
