casting question

I am making a mold of the Dragon head you can see in the screenused section. I took it apart at the seems where it was originally put together. I know the consensus is using smoothon it seems. Would it be best to brush on layers of the smoothon silicone and then put on a thick layer of figerglass resin has the hard shell. I just want to make sure this is the say to go before I move forward and by the products.

If you can post pics of the cast in peices that may help. If you brush on the silicone be sure to have at least an inch of silicone. This usually requires several layers and then the mother molds.

Like Richie said, do a nice couple of layers of brushed on silicone, then I highly recommend you use a "thickening" agent and do a final heavy, thickened coat of silicone. While doing this process you can also make keys using the silicone at the same time.

Brushing on at least the first coat will prevent bubbles (or at least many of them) against the casting surface. Just make sure that the silicone is applied thick enough to prevent deformation of the final cast. Being stingey with the silicone will always bite you in the arse! Like Tim said, use keys to lock the mold into the hard shell mother mold (if you make one).
