Carbon-Freeze Vader Saber...an MPP. The Definitive ESB

Man, I wish I had time right now to do the chart and point out why the button is an optical illusion it's a really cool combintaion of lighting and the color of the objects. I gotta go to work though

Paul and Oohyeah KL, thanks for the patience and conversing with me. I just really wanted to be sure that it wasn't a King Sol before I got rid of mine (probably like a few people). I'm positive it isn't though.

I can clearly see the wires amd the endcap does look like the MPP.

PZP your left endge line is way too far to the right. You put a line on the edge of the highlight, but the edge of the actual flash is in shadow. Look at the bit of the shroud's backside which is fully lit you can see where the edge is (since the edge is dark). Once you realign your edge guides the vertical hole actually does fit on the saber body.

It's definitely a tricky picture to wrap your head around. It fooled many of us for a very long time.
 
FYI,

There are three or four pics of vader in the ESB script book that clearly show the red wire and black wire!

Most noticable is Vader with a bunch of Snowtroopers.

Funny how once you know or realize the detail how noticable it is!

That's no MPP. I guess it was a stunt saber then since the hero was definitely a MPP.
The shroud isn't a MPP shroud and neither is the clamp for that matter. The holes look square and there doesn't seem to be a vertical (horizontal from this pic) hole. There is something else in place of a bulb release too.
Here's the MPP and stand up saber so you can see the differences.

What the stand up pic helps prove is that there is probably a wire in the CF pic since they even put a wire on this saber and it isn't even a MPP. And it shows that the wire looks like a double black and white wire.
 
Oh no, not again!

Pat', I've seen the standie in person, it is an MPP, the pic TK posted looses a little detail. It's the same exact saber as in the PoSW pic. The holes are round, the clamp is the same and the shroud is the same. Your looking at black objects against a black background (in a black and white image no less), and edges are being obscured (especialy in the post versions of the pic). I think you seeing the edges of the shroud and tube in the wrong places. I sat there and stared at the Standie for about ten minutes (while the clerks at the video store gave me wierd looks), trust me it's the same saber. Hell even the wear marks on the shroud match up!

Zach, I too believe it's the exact same saber as teh PoSW pic.

BUT to be fair, I do agree that the proportions of this standee pic saber seems very odd, like something funny has happened to the picture. But again, I'm confident they're the same saber.

BTW, I was at an electricals store just now, and guess what I came across - A B&W wire which looks exactly as that shown!! The white stripe is actually narrower than the black, like the pics!!
I'll post pics in a few hours time when I get home.

Both clamps have something different where the lever would be, the clamp on the stand up saber has a much taller base (the part where the metal plates are located), the shroud on the stand up pic is much taller, doesnt have a thumbscrew or a D-ring where it's suppose to be, not the right bulb-release, no vertical hole, and from the angle we should be able to see some of the bottom port holes.
No, I'm not seeing things and my vision isn't obscured. The pictures are both quite clear and it's quite clear the sabers are different.

- thumbscrew and D-ring would also be either obscured by the shadows, and/or by the robe. Again, alot like how they were obscured in the PoSW pic.

- I can see the vertical hole, with a wire across.

- I would say bottom port holes would fall in the 'black' area, which is either the end of the saber, or the shadows, again, like in the PoSW pic.

- The control box DOES look very tall - this was the bit puzzling me. But if you look at the hex screw, you can see that it is obviously distorted - enlongated vertically. That would account for the seemingly tall height.

Anyway, I don't expect you'll be convinced by the above, but at least I tried!

Yep, that would be because it's from the same photo shoot.

It's the ESB promo pic again on the SE standup. It's the same pic as on the Darth Vader Riddell mini helmet box.

The SE standup (the one with a bunch of die cut figures on top) is just a bunch of heavily retouched promo photos. I mean HEAVILY retouched practically repainted. They've been smoothed out, simplified etc. I don't have the standup, but I help put the thing together for SW Celebration and rememeber looking at the figures and how redone they were. Chris Reiff has the standup from SWC now.

So don't trust details on that standup at all. It does show a hex head bolt or nut which may or may not be correct. When they blew up that picture so big, that detail may have been visible, but it was also filtered and repainted in Photoshop.

Edit - that being said, it likely is a hex head nut on the side of the ESB saber clamp. It's not really something that the artist would've made up. If I was doing the job and the image was unclear I would favor a simple circle.
 
I'm not surprised to hear it has been retouched too.

As I posted on Alex's original separate thread when he posted those pics, you can see in the Vader chestbox closeup pic he also posted, that for Vader's chestbox coin slots, they took one coin slot area and copy-pasted it onto the other two.
I too speculated then that they probably did a photoshop job with it.

How can you tell? one is an enlargment from a book cover and the other is from a six foot tall cardboard store display.

As has been stated you can tell the pic is slightly stretched. It' looks correct in person.

The D-rings there it's just hard to see in the posted pic and the thumbscrew is buried in Vaders robes.

It's a black object against black robes, you can see the highlight on the upper part but the bottom isn't catching the light

yeah, except there is a shadow running along that side of the saber.

Parts of the saber are obscures due to Vaders robes.

Again, I've seen the standie IN PERSON I can tell you first-hand that the saber's proportions are correct and that it is the same saber as shown in the PoSW pic (which Chris has pointed out)!

OK, check this out - I think I need to make it a bit longer, but you get the idea.
This is the wire on its own looking from top down:

I think this would make an excellent wire for the saber as it has a white bit which is much narrower than the black.
Happened across it while in an electricals shop yesterday.
