I have always admired fellow prop makers talents working in the world of casting items with resin. Hearing buzzwords like Smooth-on, Dragon Skin, Eco Flex, etc. peaked my interest in this new realm of making things. So I invested in the line of raw materials and started my adventure into resin casting.
After a little trial and error (and finally getting the correct materials that I ordered) I spend many an hours held up in the garage to the wee hours of the morning learning, perfecting, and getting frustrated but again learning and perfecting my technique.
My prop was Captain Jack Sparrow's new Pieces Of Eight form the new Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides movie. Thanks to rabid "fangirls" I was able to pillage and plunder their pictures from the Internet and turn them into something that I can now create!!:love
One of my molds. Not the best technique but it did the job. I plan to redo the molds so that there is less clean up with Dremel tool!
The first pieces cast with tinted resin. Air bubbles were a major frustration but turns out using wood stirrers and paper cups was not the way to mix the resin. Getting a little bit better at getting the air bubbles out. Vacuum system is a possibility........? :confused
This is what I call the "gummy bear" portion.
More pieces out of the mold. The bead is cold cast with Nickel powder. Not the best to simulate pewter because it isn't shiny enough so a paint job is needed.
Experimenting with tints and finishes.
Final coloring, tinting, painting, sealing...did I forget anything? Oh Yeah! Construction!
