Are we talking best to worst? Because I would have to agree. While I like TWS one the best, TFA suit definitely fit into the world of TFA. The Avengers suit was.. tacky? Is that the word? I just don't see how they went from an awesome design in TFA to that.
Glad they fixed it.
In terms of his outfits: TFA > TWS > Avengers

Suit is awesome. I loved the one from TFA... the webbing-style straps and everything made it look rugged/utilitarian. The Avengers uniform was awful. Too "spangly" for my taste. TWS looks BADASS.
Now I have something to look forward to in 2014 aside from another year closer to my kids moving out of the house.

Guess it's just me that liked the Avengers suit. Really digging the Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. suit though.

Kevin Feige spoke with movie.com recently about when we might see a movie where a female character will be the star of her own feature.
So to showcase her biggest role yet, Winter Soldier's first trailer has this shot.
The future is looking brighter already.

"I'd say we already have great female heroes that are showcased and play major roles in our universe now. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as you will see, features Black Widow in her biggest role yet in any of our films."
So to showcase her biggest role yet, Winter Soldier's first trailer has this shot.

95% of her scenes in the trailer have her kicking ass, I wouldn't take one clip out of context until you see the movie.

And I wouldn't take the fact that she can "kick ass" to be the only reason why she'll be an interesting character. If being able to kick ass is all it takes to be great meaningful character, Alice from the Resident Evil movies should be regarded as one of the best fictional characters of all time. I don't see anyone making that claim. To me, Alice is the pinnacle of that misconception that all a female character needs to be in order to be worth anything more than a love interest is to be able to kick ass. That's it. Unfortunately that's what she looks to be here. A character who can kick ass and be the emotional anchor to the male character. She won't go through any development or change outside of liking the male lead more.

To be fair, Pepper and Peggy have saved their male counterparts' skin on several occasions in the movies. Marvel Studios has a pretty good track record of keeping in check the degree they objectify female characters, so I wouldn't think BW's role is necessarily un-empowered b/c Cap had to save her skin once in the movie. If they turn her into Lois Lane, that's a different story. Besides it's a pretty safe bet that they're going to have Agent 13 save Cap's skin at least once, whether in this movie or in a future movie/s. However that's not saying Marvel films are the pinnacle of the feminist film movement (far from it) but they could go a lot worse especially with how the comic book industry is.
To me bigger role means they're going to dive deeper into her story and her character.

I am not discounting what those two characters have done. Peggy is nice because someone she at least has her own thing going on in the form of those shorts. Pepper's case is a bit more... awkward. She didn't rush out and dawn the Iron Man suit to save Tony. Tony literally willed the suit onto her and told her what to do with it, even having that "I've got you" exchange be more about him being the one doing everything instead of her. And Pepper saving Tony in the end? Those powers were forcefully put into her and all she did was retaliate against the bad guy who just happened to be there. Everything that she does is dictated by the two guys in this film, not by her own initiative.
And incase anyone is wondering, this is NOT hindering my excitement for this movie. Captain America is still awesome and, yeah, more Superman than the actual Superman.

I think it might just be that the Avengers costume was kind of gaudy and didn't show quite as much sign of function as fashion compared to the TFA and WS costumes. It looked almost like the Captain America equivalent of dress blues/whites to my eye.

There's really no function to any of the suits beyond being clothing, TFA's holster, and a belt that's apparently decorative for all the times Steve uses the pouches. The Avengers suit is at least called out as being designed to be nostalgic, TFA's suit is covered in useless straps that serve no purpose but to make it look less plain and be 'clever' about the midsection stripes.

My assumption is that the "useless straps" are part of a harness system built in to Cap's suit, seeing as he's essentially a paratrooper. Obviously it's not designed for real world use, but there's a relatively believable illusion of function.
As for the belt pouches: You don't see him using the bathroom on screen either. Some things won't be shown on screen because they aren't entertaining, not because they're not necessary. I think it's a fair assumption that, as a US soldier, he would carry pretty much exactly what any other GI would carry in their pouches. Compass, maps, socks, multitool, flashlight, spoon and cup, bandages, food/water/ammo.

Don't forget the Avengers suit had useless pouches and those ridiculous zippers too.
Btw, TFA delivered nostalgia in the USO costume, along with poking fun at how ridiculous it would look in a movie. And then they did Avengers...

I liked TFA and his suit there. Avengers suit, not so much, this is a happy median I suppose. The trailer, looks awesome and I think this is going to be just as good as the Avengers by the looks of it. I like how in TWS and in the new Thor trailers the movies seem a little more serious, a little darker. Still have the one liners and comic relief but seem to be taking a little more serious tone. I'm digging it.
