So ever since Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out, I NEEDED one of those shields! I decided to revisit an old project, Valor's Steel Saucer Sled Shield. I decided to start completely from scratch and bought a whole new sled. Now last year, EVERY website had one of these things. Now they're almost impossible to find for less than $80. Luckily I found one at an online store called Doitbest.com, but requires you to pick it up in-store.

The next part was to get rid of the ugly rolled edges. First I found the center of the sled (mine was about 13.5 inches) and drilled a small hole.

Then, I took a thin piece of scrap wood and put a nail through one end and then i measured about 12 inches down from the nail and drilled a 1/4 inch hole big enough for a Sharpie. I then put the nail in the hole in the sled, put the sharpie in the wood, and spun it leaving a perfect circle for me to cut out with my jigsaw.

After, I drilled another hole below the sharpie lines for the jigsaw blade.

Next, I stripped all of the paint off with a citrus based stripper. It was SUPER MESSY!

After that, I used Valor's method of putting a paint stripper pad on a paint stick and spinning it to give it the spun look. It makes the paint look a lot better in the end!

To make the circles, I used the original wood piece I used earlier to make the outlines. The Star was about 8 inches, so I did 4 inches from the nail, 2 and a half inches away from that, and then two and half inches away from that. I drilled holes in those spots and I used a pencil to outline them on the shield.

I used a thinner tape that I got at Home Depot to give me near-perfect lines. I covered the rest up in blue painters tape.

For the paint, I'm using everyone's favorite choice. The Dupli-Color Anodized Red and Blue Paints. These paints really are a pain in the ass to work with, but its worth it!

This was my second coat. I did about 5.

Time for the Blue! I just taped down the Star Template so I could JB Weld the star on later.

After the Blue and Red were done, I wet sanded the entire shield because there were some small specks of dust that got in the paint. this got rid of it!

For the Clear Gloss Coat, I'm using these Rust-Oleum Gloss Clear Paints. THESE ARE AMAZING! It gives it an almost mirror finish and I would highly recommend doing about 10 coats.

For the Star, I just cut it out of a semi thick aluminum from Menards.

I wanted to make the screen acurate straps but since my budget was low, I just went with some simple straps made from a belt.

I epoxied some bolts to the back for the straps.

Here are some pics of the finished shield!

After all this work, I decided to sell this shield since I wanted to buy a professionally spun shield and paint it for this summers project. On ebay, these things are selling for thousands of dollars! Im hoping to get at least $500 for it! I actually uploaded a whole Youtube Tutorial on this shield which has a little bit more information, Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wg8Ch6L_-Y
Thanks!
