Captain America Shield V 2.0

So ever since Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out, I NEEDED one of those shields! I decided to revisit an old project, Valor's Steel Saucer Sled Shield. I decided to start completely from scratch and bought a whole new sled. Now last year, EVERY website had one of these things. Now they're almost impossible to find for less than $80. Luckily I found one at an online store called Doitbest.com, but requires you to pick it up in-store.

The next part was to get rid of the ugly rolled edges. First I found the center of the sled (mine was about 13.5 inches) and drilled a small hole.
2.jpg
Then, I took a thin piece of scrap wood and put a nail through one end and then i measured about 12 inches down from the nail and drilled a 1/4 inch hole big enough for a Sharpie. I then put the nail in the hole in the sled, put the sharpie in the wood, and spun it leaving a perfect circle for me to cut out with my jigsaw.

After, I drilled another hole below the sharpie lines for the jigsaw blade.

Next, I stripped all of the paint off with a citrus based stripper. It was SUPER MESSY!
6.jpg
After that, I used Valor's method of putting a paint stripper pad on a paint stick and spinning it to give it the spun look. It makes the paint look a lot better in the end!

To make the circles, I used the original wood piece I used earlier to make the outlines. The Star was about 8 inches, so I did 4 inches from the nail, 2 and a half inches away from that, and then two and half inches away from that. I drilled holes in those spots and I used a pencil to outline them on the shield.

I used a thinner tape that I got at Home Depot to give me near-perfect lines. I covered the rest up in blue painters tape.

For the paint, I'm using everyone's favorite choice. The Dupli-Color Anodized Red and Blue Paints. These paints really are a pain in the ass to work with, but its worth it!
12.jpg
This was my second coat. I did about 5.
13.jpg
Time for the Blue! I just taped down the Star Template so I could JB Weld the star on later.
14.jpg
After the Blue and Red were done, I wet sanded the entire shield because there were some small specks of dust that got in the paint. this got rid of it!
15.jpg
For the Clear Gloss Coat, I'm using these Rust-Oleum Gloss Clear Paints. THESE ARE AMAZING! It gives it an almost mirror finish and I would highly recommend doing about 10 coats.
16.jpg
For the Star, I just cut it out of a semi thick aluminum from Menards.

I wanted to make the screen acurate straps but since my budget was low, I just went with some simple straps made from a belt.
18.jpg
I epoxied some bolts to the back for the straps.

Here are some pics of the finished shield!

After all this work, I decided to sell this shield since I wanted to buy a professionally spun shield and paint it for this summers project. On ebay, these things are selling for thousands of dollars! Im hoping to get at least $500 for it! I actually uploaded a whole Youtube Tutorial on this shield which has a little bit more information, Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wg8Ch6L_-Y
Thanks!

looks great, did you make the edge of the shield not sharp after you'd cut the edge off? just watched the youtube vid but it doesn't say that you did (but i assume you did?)

Great shield....no chance of getting the sled in the UK :(

I prefer the comic shield and cannot wait for Cap to go to the feathered top in the movies in a proper blue...he looks too dull!

Maybe a costume change for the comic Civil war that's obviously coming in future movies. Here's hoping.

Good luck with the sale, you deserve $500 :thumbsup

This an awesome shield build man. Looks great and is a lot cheaper than the actual replicas! I watched your YouTube video on how to do it, but I did have a question that I don't think you covered, and if you did, I apologize.

How sturdy are the straps once they're completely done? Could the shield actually be played with and swung around, for use in a fan film or something similar, or is it mostly a display or carry-around prop?

they're actually really sturdy. I thought they would be kind of fragile, but I was swinging the thing around like crazy!

Your shield turned out awesome. I am going to try this with a satellite dish myself. I thank you in advance for the great tutorial and video.

Your shield turned out beautifully. Its funny how addictive Cap shields become, eventually everyone gets the itch for a spun aluminum upgrade.

So an update, Sold this shield for about $300, which is perfect! I'm going to be purchasing a blank from Miami Metal Spinning and I will hopefully be getting the star and straps from Valor, since I should be getting another $300 in a week from other sales. :D

I love how well your shield turned out, and how happy you are with it. One thing I would change is less clear coat, an "authentic" shield wouldn't be so glassy looking.

Another thing I was thinking of trying was to use a Burin to engrave the lines of the rings and the star, rather than cutting out a separate piece, and if anyone is wondering, a burin is a tool similar to an exacto knife, though I am still researching it. I am not quite sure but 3pcs Screwdriver Knife Handle 10pcs Blade Utility Knife Cutter Nail Burin | eBay might be it.

Question: how long did you have to leave the Citristrip on to take the paint off the sled? It doesn't seem to be doing anything for me. What did you use to scrape the paint off too?

I was inspired by your shield and was watching your youtube vid almost 3 times a day and it seems that I can't get the gloss that you have on the red. I put 3 coats on them and waited 5-7 min per coat. There are spots that are shiny and some are not. Do I continue and wet sand then spray gloss it or restart? When I took the tape off also there are some rust spots that showed up but I think I can just spin it again with the stripper pad. Any tips?
