Hey guys, new to the site, but I've been working on this thing now for 3 weeks, and I haven't gotten past the painting stage. But thanks to some advice from valor, I finally got the color and consistancy I wanted, well mostly. I got the blue perfect this time and the inner red ring too, however on the outer red the color is good but my paint job is a little splotchy (slightly darker in a couple spots). I don't know if the clear will even things out when applied or I should strip the outer ring and try again. I did read a thread on another site where they polished the paint with some sort of buffer to even it out (before clear applied), any suggestions if this would be effective?
 
Clear will not even it out, and buffing likely won't either. It's darker cause more paint is in that spot. If you can live with it, put on the clear. If you can't, the outer ring is about the easiest part to strip and redo cause it doesn't touch any other color. Hang in there. I painted each on mine multiple times to get it perfect. I shoulda bought stock in Duplicolor.
 
Clear coats generally will make your imperfections show even more, just like how metallic/glossy paints will make imperfections in a surface stand out.
 
Lol, yeah me too. Anyway thanks for the advice, you're right, I've got all the other parts near perfect, iguess I won't be satisfied til this last part is too. Also, did you use duplicolor clear or is there a better alternative available?
 
Don't even get me going on clearcoats. I struggled with a number of them. I wasn't really happy until I had a professional auto paint place clear coat mine for $75.
 
I was going to chime in .. but Valor has pretty much said everything I would say... if you ever get to try number 9... you may want to try Testor's paints over dupiicolor... especially their laquer clear coat... more expensive, but better paints, and better colors.
 
Thanks guys, yeah money isn't really an object at this point with as much as I've put in already, ill do just about anything to get this job done and have it done right. Ill check into testors paints (off hand, where can I find them?), but as to the clear, the automotive idea sounds great and I know a local body shop that might do it. I botched the red again last nite so I've gotta strip it when I get off work and try again, wish me luck. Oh and as to the star, the guy in miami I got my blank from sent me a dome piece which I have to cut out (and this is before I knew valor did such great stars) and jb weld, but his directions weren't very clear. Do I weld the star before or after the clear?
 
You want to clear after everything is complete, including the star being attached. Also have them do the back

Hey Valor, I saw on one thread that you make excellent stars, can you send me a link if you're still making them? I need an 8in version. Thanks again guys!
 
That's looking really nice ! I should be painting mine in a few days now, with all the tips I read in here, I hope it will be ok. How many cans of dupli did you use if you don't mind me asking? I only have one of each, I hope it's enough for a few tries at least, considering how hard it was to get them !

To make a metal star easily you can buy one piece of aluminium sheet and cut five (for the five branch of star) forms, like triangles ! If you see a star is geometricaly made by many triangles. I have make my own star with this system, and cut the aluminium sheet just with cissors. And after you use glue to make the star on the shield directly. It's perfect and easy ! Shops around me in Jax FL want 150-250!! :eek

Explained to 1 dude I had a 27inch diam aluminum disc that I wanted to clear coat. He didn’t want to give a price and said “I’d need to see the item” to which I replied “It’s a round disc….” :facepalm

And we hung up the phone. LOL
 
Hey guys thanks for the feedback, as to the painting question, I would at least start with a couple cans of red and blue each, along with a large container of pure acetone. It took me several cans of each to get it right, but thanks to some advice from valor and a couple other folks on here I finally got it right. Let me know if you want all the details of what I did. As to the star, I think I'm gonna order one from valor, I tried cutting the thing out of aluminum sheet and failed miserably.
 
Man, I hope they don't try to gouge me when I go to the local bodyshop, maybe they won't since I've done some business with em before. I think it would be worth about a hundred bucks to get a pro clearcoat.

If you have Microsoft Publisher, i can send you my model ?

After you print the model on paper sticker (or use normal paper and repositionable glue, like post-it glue, from 3M), put the sticker on aluminium sheet ( thickness 1/2 mm max), and just use scissors like to cut paper, very easy !
 
I got hosed the same with local auto body shops wants $20 and up, and that's if they say they might be able to even do it. I also got a lot of "I'd need to see it..."

So here's my solution. 2K clear coat: Spraymax I did a lot of research and basically hat I found was this is the closest to an auto clear from a rattle cn you can get. In a few days I'll be blasting my shield itch this, I'll let everyone know how it turned out!
