Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

I had blurry vision last night (too much gin?). Your comparison is very good Rob. Sorry to stir things up. What you said about the slightest rotation is right. Guess I'm just being too sensitive about the differences - of which there are few.

Stir things up? Oh good god no...! :) Keep the feedback coming! Second (or mulitple) sets of eyes are always helpful, and I'll need it as I go forward. I'll need all the help I can get to ensure all the lines are parallel.

And your observations are correct - there is in fact more contrast in width of the "bands" on the original, and I'll do what I can to modify as I continue to work the area.

The latest...

Its really satisfying doing this upper ring, as it makes the whole lower pole region more noticeable, and begins to add "that look".

I ended up just drawing the circle free-hand, mostly. I marked off a series of points/dots using the measurement tool I made, and just drew in the line.

So, while its pretty good, its not perfect.

As you can see, I've got some wonkiness on the center block I need to fix...

I gotta saw Rob that it is looking really good. I'd say it's about 95% accurate. And to try to get 100% would drive you insane and you would have to do about 1000 repaints to get it perfect, so good job man!

It looks like the line scribe rig you made is working perfectly!

Totally, Brad! Plus, once all done, no one will really even see the south pole (never reallys een in the film).

And the good thing is that the closer I get to the equator, the easier it gets, and hence better/more accurate it will be. Based on all the physical parameters of this project, the lower dome is just a flat out pain. Even the tools I've made will work better on the upper half.

Yeah! Looks GREAT Rob! It's really taking on that death star look!

By the way...it's interesting how there's not much going on in the next ring up from it. Then it seems to get much lighter.

Yes - there is a distinct color shift when comparing the lighter grey of the south pole region to the blank band above it (prior to leading into the cityscapes proper).

The light grey in the south pole region is more blue than the grey in the blank band. On my model its all the same color. I will probably leave it that way, though I would love to incorporate the color shift.

I've lurked around here for years and I'm always amazed at the ability of the people here. I'm challenged just building a kit. This is amazing and thanks so much for this progress thread. This is one of the most beautiful projects I've ever seen. I can't wait until you get it done!

Todays latest...

South pole reagion is doen excewpt for some clean up, Need to erase out a few pencil marks.

Next step is to mark and draw the circle that will define the blank band, then work on the heavy black circle that leads into the cityscapes.
