Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

I agree...leave the north pole the way it is :thumbsup

Once you start masking/ painting the rest, you could blend it all together with a very slight mist of lighter grey...IF neccessary.

WONDERFUL PROJECT!!!!

Looks good Rob. Maybe slightly overdone, but I wouldn't change it until I did the other panels first. You may end up just re-darkening the darkest panels on the pole and leave it at that. :)

Thanks for the input, guys...

One challenge I have with this orth pole region is quality refernce is difficult.

Judging color and contrast using shots of the original is almost useless due to the fading, staining, and other forms of degradation the model has experienced over the years.

The absolute best shots of the original, taken by Lucasfilm, is the shot/series represented by the photo recently linked from teh musci program, but very little - if any - of the polar region is visible in these shots.

So... The classic Muren shot.

Shows the north pole fairly well; perhaps more of the polar region than any other shot. But we all know this photo has expereinced many mutations. So determining just how accurate the colors and contrast is in this shot is nearly impossible.

In conclusion, I'm pretty OK with how it looks now. Enough to move on. Dave - good advice - finish the rest, then see how it looks. Editing while still working is self-defeating.

Today, with luck, will be the south pole, which may be done all by hand!

:thumbsup :thumbsup

This so beyond cool. Seeing the paintscaping starting is exciting...

So do the neighbors worry if "that thing's operational... ?!" when the door is open? :lol

This is 1:180,000, right? Or 1:170,000?

As always, awesome work! :thumbsup

No... But this thing has drawn more neighbor attention than any other project I've worked on, including 1:1 Indy.

I think its mostly due to size and prominence, but partly due to recognition.

"Honey, start packing, we're moving out."

"Good heavens, why?"

"Our neighbor is building the Death Star in his garage!"

Ah pictures again!!

Looks great!!

And I would say that when it comes to the color, or the trench, all you can do in interpret what *YOU* think looks the best.

Wish I lived closer so I could offer to help !

Made myself a new tool, which is LONGER than yours and pre-measured!

The notch in the vertical is to allow alignment directly with the poles

The blocks are to fit into and align with the trench

I photo-copied a tape measure onto self-adhesive label maker paper

Latest progress on the south pole. I told my wife it has been a bear. To which she of course replied "Polar bear...?"

It looks a tad impercise, but keep in mind it is a work in progress.

There will be an additional row of dark grey blocks which will clean up some of the offending areas here

The dark grey is again a bit too dark, so I'll likely mist over with base coat.

I masked with tape and have been hand-painting these 'stripes"

The pattern is "inspired by" the original, but not exact
