Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

After seeing the skill here, I'm guessing you created a life-sized Dennis Muren holding a light meter to stand in front of it...

The first two pics show the detailing in the central blank grey band. There is just a tad bit more to add, but its 90% there.

The last two pics show the outer extremities of the line detail of the lower dome WHICH IS NOW DONE!

The third pic (below), by the way, is all custom done by me. This is the area that is not detailed on the original, so I was able to make it up as I go.

This is truly one of the best builds I've seen on the internet to date! I just wondered why all pencil lines on this, until I saw these last photos. That's what makes this the Death Star! I've been watching this from the begining, and I just wonder what made you want to make a studio scale model of this?

I've always been fascinated by the simplisitic beauty of this model. Probably some deeply-root psych thing - drawn to the natural beauty of a sphere or some **** like that. Plus I've been obsessed with its mysteries too, most of which I've resolved through this project.

I remember the very first behind-the-scenes book I got on Star Wars when I was 10. It juxtaposed the fictional size to the true size, but referred to the model being about the size of a soccer ball! Ha!

On my model, the lead lines are hard to distunguish from the ink. On the model today, the lead appears to be significantly faded, and on screen, the resolution is low enough that it is hard to pick out the lines.

So on this replica, the lines likely appear more rich (darker) than we've ever seen before. But it is my hope and theory that this is what the original looked like, in person, "back in the day".

I think exactly that Rob. On the day she was completed for filming.......she looked a whole lot more like your DS than she does today. :)

Started in on the upper dome today and - as expected - it goes a lot faster. I covered 10% - 15% of the in about the same time it took to do 1% - 5% on the lower.

And the coolest thing is I got up to where the silver strips begin.

Y'all ain't seen nuthin' yet until you see it in person with the silver in place. It looks dang cool!

This is looking really amazing, you must have the patience of a saint. Do you plan on detailing it all the way around? When I saw the real one at the SFM in Seattle you can see that the back third of it was just left without detail. Their eyes must have started popping out by then and just said screw it, that sides never going to be seen on screen anyway:lol.
