Building the 8' Star Destroyer (superstructures done)

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Julien, I don't think there is anyone else who can hold a candle to you and your exquisite work. Your attention to detail and your obvious passion for model making have pushed you to the absolute pinnacle. You are truly an artist, and I feel honored that you are sharing this gift with the world. I hope you continue to make models for as long as you are able, because the world would be emptier without your fine work.
Merci Julien!

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Thank you very much for your kind message, I cant say I'm an artist since I just replicate what I've been done in the past (by true artists ! :)) but my passion for modelmaking is huge, you're right ! I'm not sure I deserve every words of your message, there are so many talented guys around here ! Anyway I appreciate your comment very much, thank you again !! :)

I'm a bit sad today and happy at the same time. The superstructures are finally done (still some parts to add of course ! ;)), I finished today the non hero side. No scribbing, no styrene bits, that was relaxing !

In this last pic, I tried to copy a picture which can be seen in the Sculpting a Galaxy book.

I think.... umm, i think ill just sit and dribble......Julien, there arent any superlatives available for me right now :love.

Julien, you are a true master craftsman. It takes a very special talent to replicate a model like this. The few of us who met Lorne Peterson last month will remember that he told us (several times) that replicating the filming models is harder than what he and the other ILM guys had to do to create them. And you have replicated this model to perfection. I'll say it again, you are an inspiration to us all!

You may not consider yourself an artist, but you are indeed an incredible craftsman. The dedication and patience needed for a project like this, and the talent needed is more than I can dream of.
Only thing I can think of that would make this 'cooler' is seeing it unpainted, with all the little bits in different colours to really show off how much work it was to build it (yeah, I know it's a bit too late for that), because those who has not followed this thread will never understand :)

Wow, I cannot believe how this is turning out. Okay yes I can considering who is doing it.....but holy cow........beautiful, just beautiful. :)

Julien, most truely the best piece of work I have ever seen. Something I have been scratching my head over is; how are you going to get underneath the superstructure to thread and bundle the FO ?

It must weigh a fair bit and I for one would be too scared to flip it over or turn it on its side.

As always, like everyone else who watches this build with bated breath, we can't wait for the next installment.

Dave.

I've just reread the entire thread, and enjoyed every single picture again. This is by far the most mindblowing studioscale project I've ever witnessed, and on one hand I can't wait to see it finished. On the other hand I never want these awesome updates to end. I'm splitted :-/

As mentioned before, I really hope to see this beauty IRL one day, Julien :)

*looks for his jaw drops on the floor* ... wow ... great work! May I ask you what referenz material you are using?

Please keep on posting :)

Chris

May I ask you what referenz material you are using?

My guess is he is not using the old styrene kit or the LFL database... :sick

I definitely do not want to speak for Julien, but think about using simply every single picture of the Avenger available - officially published or taken at exhibits - huh?

Anyway, this built is just epic (in every meaning this term provides)!

Go Julien!

Cheers,
Falk

Still mind blowing Tox! That's a crazy amount of detail and work there..... and maybe you might be 40% of the way.

Thank you guys, appreciate your interest !
I have no secret data, I just use every pic I found over the year on the internet. Most of them were taken by rpf members (Frank Wire's and Martyn's (Nwerke) sets are very complete and pics are of great quality. However, due to the way she's displayed (in a large display case, it's hard to take good pics of several areas (glass reflects). Some times it's very hard to figure the shape of a part but with the help of BlackPig, everything is possible ! Pictures of the Chronicles and Sculpting a Galaxy books are also great references (unfortunatly there's not enough of them !).

Detailling wise I think I'm way more than 40%, the brim trenches are not that detailled (only a few more kitparts on the resin castings), the most challenging part now (not counting making the inner frame and the main hull) will be ID'ing the parts if the engine areas. While most of them are easy to spot, several ones are hidden (or unknown from me). Still a lot of work to achieve, but to be honest, i would love this model to be an endless build... I enjoy each moment spent on it !

This thing is a very slow, slow cooker I am glad to see that it is not abandoned and is looking forward to seeing her when the main structure and the super structure is joined and finished.

Thank you Mauiman. :)

I ask again we never know... I'm still looking for the part they used for the leading edge. I opened a thread about it a while ago and was suggested it could be H beams or spacers. Unfortunatly I havent found something with the right size and shape.

Here's what I'm looking for :

http://juliensmodelshop.com/leadingedgefinaldrawings.pdf

It's not symetrical (look at the cross section, just keep in mind I havent taken any measurements so the proportions are a bit of but you get the basic shape and how the whole leading edge was constructed).

They used regular brass channels on the SSD (and on the ANH ISD, see excellent Rick's building thread), and I have the feeling it's also brass or some kind of metal (at least for the part I'm looking for, the strips they added seems to be styrene, a lot of them are broken now and brass wouldnt break this way).

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks guys !
