Budget Bane Build - Finished pics page 2!

Re: Budget Bane Build

Hey thanks CR! Honored you think so.

Speaking of "stuff I used" I neglected to detail the bottom row of pipes for you all, in case anyone's curious.
- middle two tubes are bendy-straws, just like the upper middle 4. their upper end connectors are two more of the earbud pads.
- outer two tubes are sections of the smallest size corrugated tubing I got from the multi-pack. the upper end connectors there are actually solid hot glue, shaped with the hot knife after dry.
- all four bottom connection points were made from craft foam
- the lowest outer pipe connection points, down by the jaw/chin transitions, are pipe compression fittings. The irony here is that they are naturally gold metal, but I had to repaint them after they got covered in plasti-dip.

Re: Budget Bane Build

Alrighty then. Coming down to the wire here - my own Halloween party is in 2 days!

Added the inner layer of thin foam to the cheek line; also made a bit of a "chin cup" to help hold the mask down in front and hide the bottom of my beard - totally keeping the beard even after I shave the noggin!

For the hardware and greeblies on the back of the mask, I've started with a basic shape cut in craft foam. The big plastic bottle cap is a placeholder for the round piece. It looks like I am going to use an old computer power cable for the smooth tubing under the bottom edge of the mask.

I also finally found what I can use for the battle belt! I remembered I had a weight belt from my days of heavier lifting at a real gym. That plus the two tan web belts will be the basis, along with some other stuff onhand...

tan spraypaint to the rescue to get the weight belt a bit closer to the right color... I swear, that tan paint is a lifesaver for this build. I also used it to age and fade my vest!

And all together with the foam and plastidip kidney plate, scraps of tan vinyl, and the buckle from the weight belt which will be turned 90 degrees to become the bottom buckle of the pair in front:

Edit: forgot to mention, all materials here already on hand, zero new costs incurred above. I did, however, use my $5 in dye to make a pair of my cargo pants blue-black. At first they came out purple, using the whole bottle of navy and half a powder packet of black! but I had reserved half of the black for just such a possibility; when I re-dyed with the rest of the black it came out fine. a little bit faded looking, too, just as I was hoping.

Re: Budget Bane Build

Alrighty! Finally finished, will show full pics when I can.

For now, I'll just keep up the progress shots.

The mask I finished up the bottom-most pipes on, and gave it a wash of olive/brown paint down the middle and left the sides black (based on a couple of better quality reference photos I found), plus added some grunge on the pipes. Now that I see the photos with flash, I think I added too much of the green actually and may tone that down.

The tubes from the rear portions to the front pipes along the bottom are sections of a computer power cord I found in the basement. The rear-side greeblies are a bit rough and not finished as I ran out of time. Messed up the little silver bit that holds the black tube to the bottom edge, because I didn't have a high-res reference handy when I made that bit.

So I will work on it some more before the next Halloween party, to make it even better looking.

I decided to make the top belt buckle by JB Welding a pair of D-rings together (from the pistol belt I bought) and then filling out the shape with hot glue and painting - worked pretty well if not perfectly smooth!

(finished buckle can be seen in full vest/belt/wristbrace pic below)

The vest I think came out pretty well! I mixed black and gold paint to get the color for the armor plates. The central octagon plate in front is glued down on one side and velcroed on the other, so I can still use the zipper to get the vest on and off. The pistol belts aren't attached at the bottom, they just tuck in behind the battle belt; otherwise I'd have the same on/off problem as if I couldn't use the zipper.

Here it is before the pistol belt parts were added, along with a view of the back of the battle belt.

And all finished, with the wrist brace.

Full-costume pics to come. You know, at first I didn't have a shirt on, and it didn't look right due to how far down the zipper is. then I cut the sleeves off an old brown t-shirt and put that on under, which didn't look perfect but was OK. I'll work that out some before the next party as well if I can.

Re: Budget Bane Build

Hey thanks. BTW the pistol belt arrangement on the front is actually one belt cut up - I didn't have enough belt to just do two whole straps front to back, so these only go about an inch under the shoulder pads and are glued to the pads' bottoms. So on the back there is no pistol belting, but that's OK by me - hell, there isn't the weird zipper panel on the back either, nor the cord ties on the sides since I didn't use two vest pieces... Anyway, I took the LBV harness's own straps and clipped them to the middle-bottom loops of the molle web to finish out the back, since it's all under the kidney bit anyway. I'll add a pic of that asap.

Man - Now that I've posted the "finished" shots, I now have several ideas on how to improve the thing before halloween and/or the next party!

Re: Budget Bane Build

Here's the vest back with the aforementioned strap arrangement...

And for giggles, the boots, which I didn't get time to add buckles nor the upper cuffs to, but I think I got the overall boot color pretty good (yep, that's paint, not dirt and dust, over black boots).

With my office building one of the myriad closed in preparation for franken-hurricane, I might actually have a little time to work on this all some more and make it better; see what I can do with the materials I have onhand and such, might be able to add some of the touches I wasn't able to before Saturday.

Also:
Caught a glimpse of myself in the rearview mirror this morning on the way to work and realized, since I shaved the head but kept the beard, I'd make a decent Doc Strange as well =0)

Cheers!

Re: Budget Bane Build

Hahaha. I just finished shaving my head. Not like your though. hehe.

Oh yeah, that was the better part of an hour with clippers and then an actual razor. Fully committed! My head is f-ing cold now, though! Man I wish last week's temps were here again (I'm in the midatlantic, currently being pelted with cold-ass Sandy)

Re: Budget Bane Build

OK - finally got pics of the whole thing done! A couple of them are a little fuzzy, but you'll be able to see what about $140 and stuff lying around the house got me!

I also note: with the vest being physically larger than I'd thought it would be, even all my gym work didn't make my arms NEARLY big enough to pull this off. Still, everybody loved it.

UPDATE! Got better pics, further down the thread, so I removed a couple of the crappy ones here!

Oh, and if I didn't mention it before, the kneepads are mechanics' kneepads from Advance Auto ($7-8), which I cut down in size and thickness and just hotglued onto my pants.

That is just awesome, especially considering the time frame and ingenuity involved! Budget builds like these are my favorite part of this forum by far - it's amazing how talented and inventive the members are, yourself definitely included.

JUST NOW got a couple pics from the second party I went to, though I'd post them here because they're better quality than the earlier ones, and I thought it was funny that my boot lifts made my 5'6" self taller than that refrigerator.

Great build and use of materials! Bookmarked this thread so I can use some of these techniques... awesome job!
